Saturday, April 30 will be a big Beltway day. Not only do we have the super middleweight championship doubleheader at the DC Armory as well as the Regional Golden Gloves at Rosecroft Raceway, we also have two locals competing on a card at the StubHub Center in Carson, CA and one of those bouts will be nationally televised on Fox.
Fort Washington, MD's Thomas "Top Dog" Williams, Jr. will be in the 10-round televised co-feature bout when he takes on Edwin "La Bomba" Rodriguez of Worcester, MA by way of the Dominican Republic. Williams (19-1, 13 KO's) is coming off a second-round TKO victory over Umberto Savigne on November 13 in Biloxi, MS. Rodriguez (28-1, 19 KO's) also fought his last bout on the November 13 card in Biloxi and knocked out Michael Seals in the third round. Both men in a recent conference call said that this bout would not go the distance. The telecast will begin at 8 PM ET.
In a non-televised contest on this card, Landover, MD's "The Real Deal" Phil Jackson Benson will battle undefeated David "Red Flag" Benavidez of Phoenix, AZ in an eight-round encounter. Benson (16-2, 15 KO's) bounced back from his knockout loss to Darnell Boone in April of last year by scoring a third-round TKO over Jinner Guerrero on August 28 in DC. The 19-year-old Benavidez (13-0, 12 KO's) has knocked out his last five opponents including a second-round knockout of Kevin Cobbs on January 19 in Los Angeles, CA. Eleven of Benavidez's 12 KO's have come in either the first or second round.
