The undercard bouts for the Golden Boy Promotions card on Saturday, March 5 at the DC Armory have been announced and the card is now complete.
We know about the main event -- undefeated WBA Interim Heavyweight champion Luis "The Real King Kong" Ortiz of Miami, FL by way of Camaguey, Cuba (24-0, 21 KO's) will take on Tony "The Tiger" Thompson of Washington, DC (40-6, 27 KO's) in a 12-round non-title contest.
The co-feature is a 12-round bout for the vacant WBO Welterweight championship -- Jessie Vargas of Las Vegas, NV (26-1, nine KO's) will battle Sadam "World Kid" Ali of Brooklyn, NY (22-0, 13 KO's). This bout will be refereed by the Beltway's own Kenny Chevalier.
There will also be a matchup for the interim WBC Featherweight title as Robinson Castellanos of Celaya, Guanajuato, Mexico (23-11, 13 KO's) will face off against Oscar Escandon of Ibague, Colombia (24-2, 16 KO's) in another 12-round encounter.
Counting Thompson, there will be a total of five Beltway Boxers on this card. Undefeated Upper Marlboro, MD lightweight Lamont Roach, Jr. will battle Mario "Huracan" Macias of Iztacalco, Distrito Federal, Mexico in an eight-round contest. Roach (9-0, three KO's) is coming off a six-round unanimous decision over Jose Bustos on October 17 in New York City. This will be the first scheduled eight-round contest for Roach. Macias (28-17, 14 KO's) has won two straight including a 10-round disqualification victory over Angel Aguilar on February 13 in Mexico City.
Temple Hills, MD super middleweight D'Mitrius "Big Meech" Ballard looks to stay undefeated as he takes on Leosvy Mayedo in a six-round contest. Ballard (11-0, seven KO's) last fought on December 19 and won a six-round unanimous decision over Fabiano Pena in Verona, NY. Mayedo (8-2, five KO's) looks to bounce back from a second-round TKO loss to Earl Newman on September 22 in Bethlehem, PA.
Landover, MD super featherweight Kevin "K-Smoov" Rivers, Jr. will look to bounce back from suffering his first pro loss when he takes on Angel Aispuro of Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico in a six-round bout. Rivers (12-1, nine KO's) lost his last contest by six-round majority decision to Alejandro Ochoa on October 3 in Carson, CA. Rivers was knocked down twice in the contest. Aispuro (6-3-2, three KO's) is unbeaten in his last four contests but fought opponents with a combined record of 6-23-1.
Also on the card will be Oxon Hill, MD light heavyweight Alexander "The Great" Johnson who will take on undefeated Todd Unthank-May of Philadelphia, PA in a six-rounder. Johnson (16-3, seven KO's) lost in his last outing by seventh-round TKO to Artur Beterbiev on June 12 in Chicago, IL. Unthank-May (8-0, three KO's) has not fought since November of 2013 when scored a second-round TKO over Kentrell Claiborne in Bethlehem, PA.
In other bouts, Rashidi "Speedy" Ellis of Lynn, MA will be in an eight-round welterweight bout against Marco Antonio Lopez of San Luis Potosi, Mexico. The undefeated Ellis (14-0, 11 KO's) won two regional titles in his last bout via fourth-round TKO over Victor Gonzalez on March 14 in Caguas, Puerto Rico. Lopez (24-8, 15 KO's) has lost three straight and six of his last seven bouts.
In a six-round super lightweight bout, undefeated Zachary "Zungry" Ochoa of Brooklyn, NY will battle Rosbel "Lobito" Montoya of Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico. Ochoa (13-0, six KO's) is coming off a third-round TKO over Alejandro Rodriguez on October 2 in Los Angeles, CA. Montoya (16-6-1, 13 KO's) has lost four straight by knockout.
Philadelphia's Damon Allen will be in a six-round contest against Daniel Perales of Montee rrey, Nuevo León, Mexico. Allen (8-0, three KO's) won a six-round unanimous decision over Oscar Santana on November 6 in Los Angeles. Perales (6-3-1, three KO's) won a six-round unanimous decision of his own in his last outing on December 17 in Monterrey.
The card will get underway at 4:30 PM ET. The HBO Boxing After Dark telecast will start at 10 PM ET.
