Four local amateurs captured National Silver Gloves championships in Independence, MO this past weekend.
Baltimore, MD's Lorenzo Simpson made history by winning his sixth straight national title in his sixth weight class. Simpson captured the Boys Junior Open, 14-15, 157-165 pound with a win over Alexsis Espino of Las Vegas, NV. Only Nico Hernandez has won six consecutive titles and Simpson broke a tie with hall of famer Oscar De La Hoya and the Beltway's own Dominic Wade who both won five national Silver Gloves titles.
Three other Beltway Boxers won titles during the weekend. Ragahleak Bartee of DC won his second straight national title defeating Randy Canaday of St. Louis, MO to capture the Boys Intermediate Open, 12-13, 76-80 pound division. Stacey Selby of DC won his second straight championship taking the Boys Intermediate Open, 12-13, 113-119 pound class from Jose Ibarra of Shafter, CA. Also, Jelani Hill of DC won the Boys Pee-Wee Open, 8-9, 86-90 pound division with a victory over Demarko McKinstry of Cincinnati, OH.
The DC/Baltimore contingent was part of Region 3 which stretched from Maryland to Florida. Region 3 boxers won 14 national titles, giving the region its first team title in 20 years.
