Beltway Amateurs Begin Olympic Trial Quest!

At the beginning of today, 11 Beltway amateur boxers began their quest for a berth in the upcoming US Olympic Trials by competing in the USA Boxing National Championships in Colorado Springs, CO.

Three of the locals competed in the first preliminary session this afternoon and now that number has been reduced to 10. Gary Antonio Russell of Capitol Heights, MD lost his 123-pound contest to Luis Feliciano of Milwaukee, WI by a 14-13 contest.

Russell's brother, Allen, fared better in the 141-pound bracket winning his opening round by 13-8 decision over Kent Cruz of St. Louis, MO.

At 165-pounds, Antoine Douglas of Burke, VA won his first contest in that bracket with a 19-16 decision over Jamal Robinson of Cleveland, OH.

Here is the list of other locals competing this week. Most of them will start action tomorrow.

Asia Stevenson -- 125 pounds (female)

Franchon Crews -- 165 pounds (female)

Dara Shen -- 165 pounds (female)
