Bowe-Lewis..at CAMDEN YARDS?

Frankly, this sounds like a very early April Fools joke. However, WBAL-TV in Baltimore is reporting that former heavyweight champions Riddick Bowe and Lennox Lewis will come out of retirement to face each other and the bout would be held at Oriole Park at Camden Yards on September 11.

Bowe has not fought at all since a bout in Germany in 2008 and has not fought in the United States since 2005. Bowe has not been able to get licensed in the US and quite honestly, I don't think he would be able to get a license in Maryland.

Lewis was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2009 and has not stepped into a ring since 2003.

BATB will follow up on this but I will be surprised if anything comes of it.

Why would Lewis waste his time?

Bowe is punch drunk and needs money. People seen him selling autographs at a yard sale/auction type place in New Jersey. He can barely talk. Panella should not let him box in MD and the ABC should not let him box anywhere in the US.

This simply cannot be true. Did a real news organization verify this report? And on SEPT. 11!!!!!!!???????? And Camden Yards? This fight might not fill up Lincoln Theater, let alone a baseball stadium. If I'm Lennox Lewis, I don't even summon the energy required to squash this ridiculous pipe dream. -- J.S.

Say it ain't so, Bowe. It was great to see him at the last Patriot Center show....exactly where he should be, sitting ringside as an elder statesman of the sport and entering the ring for a few minutes between bouts to acknowlege a well-deserved ovation.

Sanctioning a bout with him at this point would be nothing less than malpractice. Anybody who spoke with him, even briefly, at the Patriot Center could tell by his speech and conversational delay that he shouldn't be in the ring as a fighter.

There was a reason that he politely declined the mic when Jackie Kallen tried to hand it to him during the ring introduction, and then tried to smooth things out with a gentle, "He's shy."
