May 9 Winchester Card Taking Shape!

The latest addition of Left Hook Boxing's "Tomorrow's Champions" card taking place on Saturday, May 9 at the Winchester Sportsplex in Winchester, VA is coming together.

The main event features Front Royal, VA junior welterweight Andrew "The Doo Man" Farmer taking on a true veteran in Marty "Too Sweet" Robbins of Crossville, TN in a scheduled eight-round contest.

Because of injuries to himself and prospective opponents, Farmer (11-1, seven KO's) hasn't been in the ring since winning an eight-round unanimous decision over Cesar Vega on August 9 in Salem, VA.

Robbins presents Farmer's most experienced foe to date, having participated in 65 pro bouts (22-42-1, 15 KO's). Robbins has fought the likes of Verquan Kimbrough, Michael Clark, Monty Meza-Clay and the Beltway's own Dean White, who won a six-round split decision over Robbins in January of 2006 in Pikesville, MD.

Speaking of White, the "Pitbull" was slated to be in the eight-round co-feature on this card against the undefeated "Mongolian Mongoose" Bayan Jargal. However, White suffered an injury in training.

Therefore, Jargal (11-0-1, eight KO's) will face Brian "The Lion" Carden of Saint Joseph, MO (8-7, seven KO's) in the co-feature. Jargal fought on the last Winchester card on March 9 and scored a third-round knockout over Reggie Nash. Jargal has knocked out his last five opponents.

Carden will try to avoid being knocked out for the third straight time. Carden has suffered first-round knockouts in his last two bouts.

Also slated to be on the card are Jaime "The Punisher" Palma, Scott "The Body Snatcher" Hossaflook and "Dangerous" Dwayne Davis.

"An injury in training" What was that sudden blinding clarity of the prospect of facing "The Mongoose"? That has to be the most ridiculous matchup of '09. Who the heck thought that one up? How about Butterbean against Twiggy?

Anonymous said...

Shoot, I just went back and read the rest of the article. Can't you do the fans a favor and give Jargal someone with a pulse???

Anonymous said...

There's always somebody who can't fight themselves that feels so insecure that they have to cut other people down.

Anonymous said...

There's always someone who can't accept the truth that someone else says, regardless of what they do.
That would be you.

No cutting down. They are out of Jargal's league. I like Dean White, like to see him fight, but don't like to see him overly outmatched. Who want's to pay to see a feathers ripped apart by a tornado?

I bet a lot of fighters would agree with me on this one, especially ones worth their salt.

Anonymous said...

And I guarantee you fans agree with me. That's boxing fans, not WWE or other fantasy sports.

Anonymous said...

How's that for some heavy insecurity for you, truthophobe? :)

Some people just have no clue about bringing a fighter along with gradual steps up not dramtic steps up. Jargal is an exceptional fighter but why rush something that could be great in the end? I guess this is just one of those things that people that are just fans can't grasp.... oh well.

Anonymous said...

That's bullcrap. Jargal doesn't need to be protected and coddled that much and you know it. There are degrees of stepping up and forward, but you don't have to break him down to babysteppn' and diaper him with an asinine match and expect his integrity and the fans' integrity not to be insulted.

I understand what you are saying about developing a fighter, but no I don't grasp the matchmaking mess with Jargal on this one.

Is it that it was just an easy match for the matchmaker? That maybe that was all the matchmaker could come up with, or cared to come up with. Is that the real issue? You are going to have to explain it better to me because I am incredulous over it.

Anonymous said...

People that are just fans...you know those silly saps that buy the tickets that allow promoters to have shows actually know a lot more than you give them credit for.

If you don't get that, then you in the long run won't keep fans.

Oh well...

Anonymous said...

Why don't you just tie a punching bag in the middle of ring and have him go 8 rounds. Then you don't have to overtax yourself to find a worthy, but not too worthy opponent, wink wink.

The fans who just don't understand boxing, would surely eat it up and you might get matchmaker of the year award.

Andrew is fightig a guy who has lost 16 of 17 fights. What a joke. The boy can fight,So let him fight somebody with a winning record. Its going to be a early KO.

Anonymous said...

Because unlike Jargal who is already great and whose developmental track is already on a different level, Andrew is truly an exceptional fighter who has the potential to be great. So this match makes sense for him. Especially considering he has been out of action for awhile and had a significant injury. This should be a good match.

Anonymous said...

Andrew has been fighting since he was 8 years old.How many years does it take to fight better opponents. Some time or another he has to take a chance. This is just another win for him.Not putting him down, just like to see him challange himself.Theirs no way he is going to lose this fight.

Anonymous said...

I guess if Andrew felt he was ready for a more competitive fight he would make it happen. He just had an injury, so unlike how Robles' handlers threw him in with Calloway after a major accident, this fight makes sense.

Anonymous said...

At least Robles handlers arent scared to step it up.Some times you win some times you lose.Thats boxing.

I'm reading these posts and it looks like somebody is trying to set me up. I have not posted anything on this topic until this very post. Scott Farmer is a great promoter and a good friend of mine. Scott knows what he's doing, believe me. Somebody threw in Robles' name and it wasn't me or anyone from our camp. Somebody is just looking to start trouble and I can assure you with 100% certainty that it's not any of us.

Thanks,

Joe Hensley

No. What they did was to the other extreme. They overstepped it up too soon. He was hurt in that fight. He should have had a couple or few tune up fights, before even considering matching him with Calloway. That premature grandiose move was more detrimental than helpful to building him and his potential career. In that instance a little intelligent fear for the safety and long-term development of their fighter would have served Robles better. It should be a matter of knowing when to hold back and when to step it up.

I posted about Jargal.

All these other cats jumped in the mix, yet aside from claiming it was above the understanding of a fan, nobody is addressing why Jargal is in such a fruit-loop match.

Anonymous said...

Who is Jaime Palma fighting.Would like to know before i come all the way up there to see him fight.

Anonymous said...

Who is the matchmaker of Bayan Jargal?

Anonymous said...

Scott Farmer usally does the match making. And has been doing a good job.His last show was real good.Hopefully this one is the same.

Anonymous said...

Scott,

Why aren't we seeing Ridgeway on the card? Is he hurt?

Linda "Great Shot" Siadys said...

Scott's fights are always great!

Digital will you and Jerome be at this one? Loved the Gabcast from last night.

Gary Digital Williams said...

Thanks, Linda!

I plan to be at the card. I'm not sure about Jerome.

Anonymous said...

Joe we are not trying to set you up.Why do you always think that. You dont have to write that every time.Scott hope you have good fights. Is ridgeway fighting.

Bo Jack Mangles is now on the card.
You figure out who he is.

Linda "Great Shot" Siadys said...

Henry "Donald" Martinez? Can't be he retired in the early '90's. Hot or cold. If I am cold need another clue.

Anonymous said...

Derek Amos?

Linda "Great Shot" Siadys said...

He's retired right? Who would he be fighting, Dean Pultz? That doesn't make sense. Boxing rec doesn't have 1/4 of the card up and Dean White is still on there.

Come on Scott, give us the scoop.

Anonymous said...

Never heard of Dean Pultz? Get a clue Linda.

Linda "Great Shot" Siadys said...

I know Dean Pultz. You get a clue, or better yet enroll yourself in a reading comprehension class.

Anonymous said...

22-42-1 vs 11-1 ? what kind of match making is that? And that's the main event?

Anonymous said...

There is no such pro fighter by the name of Dean Pultz, you better take some reading or spelling comprehension classes.

Anonymous said...

You might know a fighter by the name of boone pultz!

Linda "Great Shot" Siadys said...

Oh crap! You are so right I apologize.

Brian said...

Well don't let the record fool ya. They guy isn't winning any belts, but he isn't a complete bum either.

Brian said...

Have u looked at who the guy has fought? Instead of looking only at the numbers

Anonymous said...

I will bet you one thing farmer won't knock out robbins.

Anonymous said...

Why don't you look at the champions of today and see who there first 15 or 20 fights wee against? i am sure if andrew had his way he would fight the toughest around. But that is why he has a manager and is not doing it himself. Why don't you try supporting these local fighters and stop bashing the machmaking and maybe these guys will bring Boxing in va back in a big way.?

Anonymous said...

You're right Brian, Andrew Farmer vs. Marty Robbins is a good fight. It is a real test to see where Andrew really is and I think he will pass that test with flying colors! Everyone I know in Virginia is pulling for you Andrew and Scott and we will be there to support you! And, don't be surprised if Andrew knocks Robbins out. Scott has taught Andrew how to punch correctly and Andrew has that puncher's physique, a la Alexis Arguello, with a lot of snap on his punches.
Thanks,

Joe Hensley

Marty Robbins since 1-20-2007 has not always been in the winning corner but the fighters he fought had a 135 wins 24 losses combined and he took all the distance other than Juan Orangu who is fighting Andre Berto at the end of the month22 wins is twice as many as 11.He can fight. So can Andrew.

Anonymous said...

Andrew it dont matter who you fight somebody is going to have something negative to say about you on this blog.Good luck see you at the fight.
