Cummings Stops Davis to Win Maryland Title!

Baltimore's Cory "Black Ice" Cummings overcame mounting adversity to score a ninth-round TKO and capture the Maryland State Super Middleweight title over Demetrius Davis of Clinton at Du Burns Arena in Baltimore.

Cummings did not get a minute out of the first round before the two veteran warriors clashed heads, causing a gash over Cummings's right eye. In the eighth round the two clashed heads again, causing a cut on his left eye.

While the ringside physicians were closely examining the cut in the corner after almost every round, Davis was showing superb ring generalship, switching from conventional to southpaw and showing slick veteran tricks.

Sensing urgency, Cummings quickly picked up the pace and landed some hard shots in the last minute of the eighth round. Davis was still boxing well but Cummings was shortening the distance and Davis was starting to trade more with the powerful Cummings.

In the ninth, Cummings caught Davis coming in with a right hook that dropped him. Davis beat referee Gary Camponeschi's 10-count but was deemed unfit to continue. The bout was stopped at 1:45 of the ninth.

Cummings is now 17-4, 13 KO's while Davis falls t0 19-15-5, seven KO's.

In the co-feature, Baltimore's James "Keep 'Em Sleepin'" Stevenson went the distance in a bout for the first time in his pro career but managed to remain undefeated with an eight-round unanimous decision over Manuel Guzman of Lancaster, PA.

Early on in the bout, Stevenson fought well at a distance and worked to give Guzman different angles. But the native of Puerto Rico managed to do well and, at times, draw Stevenson into a close quarter, phone-booth bout. Stevenson showed he was able to adapt during the bout and went on to victory in the only bout on the card that went the distance. Judge Gary Camponeschi said Stevenson pitched a shutout, 80-72. Judge Don Risher saw the bout 79-73 and Dave Greer matched the BATB scorecard at 78-74.

Stevenson is now 9-0, eight KO's while Guzman falls to 6-7-1, two KO's.

Other results:

Baltimore's Steve "The Show Stealer" Wheeler won by third round TKO over Winchester, VA's Dan Shullin a cruiserweight contest. The bout was stopped at 1:03 of the third. Wheeler is now 2-0, one KO while Shull is 1-6.

Heavyweight Maurice "The Freight Train" Byarm of DC scored a second-round TKO over Darius Whitson of Winston-Salem, NC. The bout was stopped at 2:55 of the second. Byarm rises to 2-0, two KO's while Whitson is now even at 1-1.

Barry Trotter of Columbia, MD won by TKO at the end of the first round over Baltimore's Justin Blackwell when Blackwell could not answer the bell for the second round due to a hand injury. Both men were making their pro debuts in the junior middleweight contest.

The promoter was Baltimore Pro Boxing. The matchmaker was Josh Hall.

So, I've been away awhile, but I'm stunned at the paucity of comments here. I came back at the right time. Beltway fans, you missed a monster. . .
The Cummings-Davis fight, in a just world, would be in the mix for club fight of the year, if there is such an honor. What a brutal war this was, with blood pouring out of cuts on both of Cummings' eyelids, and Davis alternating between walloping him and taunting his corner. Cory, however, with the crowd on his side, just kept chugging, through all the withering body shots and blasts to the head. How he took it, I don't know, but he cut the gap, like Digital said, and turned desperate bomb dropper. At that point, late in the game, with much energy expended, they suddenly began to trade what from my ringside vantage point looked like kill shots. The one that felled Davis like he had been hit by a tranquilizer gun was a spectacular. Cummings earned every second of the jubilation that broke out in the ring afterward. In the old days, the ring might have been showered with coins and bills. That's how boxing fans in some parts of the country used to show their appreciation.
Davis, despite losing, acquitted himself as, at 40, a warrior.
The Stevenson-Guzman semifinal was like an appetizer you like so much, you forget about the main course. At first Stevenson looked to be too strong, too fast, too much of a body snatcher. But Guzman had this uppercut he fired like a bazooka, and although it looked underpowered at first, he proved very much otherwise, hurting Stevenson several times in a tactical, fast-paced battle. This was a scholastic test for Stevenson because .500 record or not, Guzman knows the art of boxing. The homeboy didn't put him to sleep, as he did his first eight opponents, but he gets an 'A' on the report card anyway. Great seeing the whole gang: Jowett, Greenhill, Discombob, the good matchamker Hall, Digital, Fight Doctor, Arnie D., Pettway, Jake, Pat P...Man, it felt like a frat party. Too bad the crowd was elsehwere. They missed a couple cracklers. -- John S.

Wow, Where did this guy James Stevenson come from? He is very talented. What was his amateur background like? I don't remember him from the amateurs and he is a beltway boxer. Congratulations on your victory. Stay focused and train hard, you have got a lot of talent and a bright future in boxing.

Taylor is having problems finding boxers to face him. People keep dropping out. He is slated to be on this Friday's card in Westminster but I have not seen the rest of the card yet.

Somebody actually had the never to say this:

"manny taylor is not on because
jake don't mess with fighters
that have some one behind them
because he can't fuck them over
like he do with fighters that are
sign with him just ask jessei, and
mike pascal."

That comment could have only been written by a guy who has no idea what it takes to promote a show. Manny Taylor probably isn't on the show because it's going to be hard to get people to fight him for money that doesn't break the bank. And who's got to put up that money you ask? Why it's the Promoter of course! And I'm sure Manny being a young kid isn't really selling a ton of tickets to cover his purse and his opponent's purses. So who's paying the difference? Again it's the Promoter! And you've got the nerve to say Jake Smith fucked over Nicklow and he fucked over Paschall and he's not putting Taylor on because he can't fuck over Taylor? You're an idiot beyond compare to say something like that! Really, where on earth would Mike Paschall and Jesse Nicklow be if it weren't for Jake Smith? Who put on the shows and made their matches? Who put the money up for all of that to happen? You're damn right it was Jake Smith! He put on Nicklow 19 times and Paschall 14 times. And Paschall screwed him when he fought Dirrell on Showtime, Jake didn't make a dime! And again where would Paschall and Jesse be without Jake? No fucking where, that's where! And you have the nerve to say that Jake Smith fucked them over? What an idiot you are! And by the way, Manny Taylor better realize that talent alone doesn't really get you places in this business. He's going to have to sell some tickets and the people around him better get him some sponsors or get some money behind him. Because as good as he is, if he doesn't have any money behind him, or can't make the Promoter of the show any money, he will never go anywhere. And that's the business in a nutshell. Take it from someone who knows.

Signed,

Damn right I'm a Promoter
