Samuel Added to April 2 Ballroom Card; New Opponent for Lange on May 2!

Maryland State Super Featherweight champion Tyrell "Da Show Shock'A" Samuel of Baltimore has been added to the Thursday, April 2 Ballroom Boxing card at Michael's Eighth Avenue in Glen Burnie, MD.

Samuel (11-2, five KO's) has not fought since winning the Maryland State title with a 10-round unanimous decision over Ron Boyd on November 20. No word yet on who Samuel's opponent will be.

A new opponent has been chosen for Great Falls, VA junior middleweight Jimmy Lange when he steps into the ring on Saturday, May 2 at the George Mason University Patriot Center in Fairfax, VA. Veteran Frank Houghtaling will now face Lange in the 12-round main event for the WBC USNBC title. Houghtaling replaces Ryan Davis who unexpectedly backed out of the contest.

Houghtaling (19-15-5, four KO's) has fought quality opposition throughout his career including Matthew Hatton, Hercules Kyvelos and Contender -- Season 2 star Gary Balletto and has won three regional titles during his career. Houghtaling is also no stranger to the Beltway area, having fought former world champion and Beltway legend Sharmba Mitchell on a nationally-televised card on July 2, 2002 at the Lincoln Theatre in DC. Houghtaling lost a 10-round unanimous decision.

NO DISRESPECT BUT SHARMBA IS NO LEGEND. SUGAR POOH & FIGHTERS LIKE HIM ARE LEGENDS.

Anonymous said...

Pooh isn't a legend and neither is sharmba now a beltway legend maybe but "Legend" no sir. Mark Johnson & Ray Leonard are the only to I feel held that title from DC.but you have to understand what a legend is to know one when u see one. And dont get me wrong there were many great fighters from DC but very few legends and thats real talk.

Richard u could have been a legend if u didnt get stopped by jeter. Lmao what a loser he was many had high hopes 4 u. I'm not trying to down you at all cuz u can fight its just your drive just isnt there like the so called legends & great fighters that time seemed to pass u right on by.

I accept what happened to me in boxing and honestly Tony was very lucky thats all I got to say. I wish him all the best in his career though. Alot of people judge me good and bad but I made it in a diffrent way then others. I worked with some of boxing best like Joppy,Holmes,Coley,Tarver thats just to name a few// And I am good friends with many such as Zab Judah,Nate CampbellChop chop, ricardo Williams,Pernell Whitaker etc.. I mean folks I can pick up the phone and call anytime so I cant complain.

Here's the deal. Lange won't fight any of the good local guys: Nicklow, Arvin, or Rivera. That just won't happen. They would beat Lange and everyone knows it.

You can call it an upset but I won't. Frank Houghtaling will beat Jimmy Lange. Write it down, put it in an envelope, stamp it, mail it - it's a done damn deal! Lange will lose and it's time to say bye bye Jimmy baby!

As far as the card slated for the 18th..barring a miracle, the card will not happen on that date.

In fact, the word I heard last week is that the organizers plan to move the card to either May or June. The card is slated to take place at the Washington Convention Center as I said in an earlier item.

Buchanan is one of the people looked at to be on that card but nothing is definite.

I consider Sharmba Mitchell a legend in the area in the same manner I call Keith Holmes, William Joppy, Mark Johnson and others -- because of their longevity and because they have been champions.

against Jimmy, and I don't think he would win. George is really starting to mature as a fighter and knowing how to finish a fight before the fight finishes him. Nicklowe, even less of a chance of topping Jimmy. He's good though and would like to see him fight more outside of his hometown so his skills are really tested and honed with no safety net. It would only make him a better fighter.

I've thought this on and off, but the fact is that it's a rare fighter who can draw the numbers that Jimmy does here, and I can't come up with any business argument that would merit a change in venue. Besides, I think that the idea of a hometown "safety net" is overrated. Jimmy certainly didn't get a hometown call in the first Cabell fight.

One thing that continues to surprise me is that the Patriot Center cards have yet to be picked up by ESPN, any of the premium cable networks, or even Versus. How many times have we seen a Friday Night Fights or Boxing After Dark where the crowd is no bigger than a mid-size club draw?

Glad McCombs isnt talking about the comeback anymore! That always made me shake my head, considering he never beat anyone and got knocked out by a 4th tier fighter. Mitchell is a local legend, that is all Gary was saying. He won multiple championships, beat some great fighters and got beat by some great fighters. Shambra was bigtime, not a clubfighter like most in boxing and teh vast majority in this area. Lange, Rivera, Buchannon would sell their souls to have just three of the big fights Shambra had during his career. Simon Brown should be added to the list as well as Vince Pettway for local legends.

Chris,

The reason why the Lange fights haven't been on ESPN is because that's the way Johnny Lange wants it. Doesn't make any sense to me either but it is what it is.

Sharmba Mitchell was a big time, elite fighter. No doubt about that.

Vincent Pettway also was big time in his era. I can still remember as a kid watching his fight with Simmon Brown, AWESOME knockout!

Gary listed all of the greats once before. No doubt about Vincent Pettway & Sharmba Mitchell
