Smith, Faggins Lose in Caymans!

Luther "Sugarman" Smith and Calvin "Pekoe" Faggins both lost by knockout this past Saturday in the Cayman Islands. Smith (22-7-2, 12 KO's) was stopped by Charles Whittaker in the first round while Faggins (3-4-1, one KO) lost to Mario Galan in the second round.

One other note, "Money" Mike Sawyer who serves as the manager for both Smith and Faggins, also worked the corner of New York fighter Anthony Osbourne in his 10-round unanimous decision win over 60-year-old former world champion Saoul Mamby, who started his career during the Nixon Administration and won his WBC Junior Welterweight title when Jimmy Carter was President.

"Sweet" Saoul Mamby was one of the finest fighters of his time and a staple back in the days of the CBS Sports Spectacular. Shifty, difficult to hit, fairly light punching and competitive for ages -- and now I mean ages -- because of his knowledge of craft. A quick glance through Boxrec reminds us how dangerous he was, beyond his reign as the lesser light welterweight titlist of the WBC during a time of typical boxing championship fracture. He beat tough Reyes Cruz (37-1-1) at age 40, then 18-0 Glenwood "The Real Beast" Brown at age 41, tough Gary Hinton at 42, and went 10 with Maurice "The Explosive Thin Man" Blocker at 43. He is like the legendary Minnie Minoso, a Cuban-born Negro League player who went 1-for-8 for his old MLB team, the Chicago White Sox in 1976 at age 53. In 2003, Minoso drew a walk at age 77 in an independent league game. Let's not forget former lightweight titlist Kenny Lane returned from a 17-year retirement to win bouts at age 52, losing his last two years later in 1985. Mamby went pro in 1969 and was one of the best fighters from New York during his long era. He went the distance the other night with a guy who went six fairly recently with Jessie Nicklow. Not too shabby, old-timer. -- John Scheinman

I had the pleasure of being in the locker room with Saul Mamby at Madison Square Garden in 1980 when he faught Termite watkins and beat him.I have never seen a fighter so calm, mild mannered and full of class as Mr Mamby It has truly been one of the highlights of my life in the boxing world to have been exposed to this man especially at fight time and at this point in his career.

Nice to see Scott Farmer weigh in on something. Always good to see what you have to say. Never be afraid to stand behind your name.

To be honest, that may be it for Tinky. It was not a good performance to say the least. He may be hanging them up for good. At the very least, he's taking some considerable time off. His fiance gave birth the night before we left to a new baby son, LJ (Luther Junior) & he's going to spend some well-needed time with his family. He's one of most well-loved people I've ever met, by his family & everone else he knows. If this is it for him (hint-hint), he gave us all a helluva career & if you ever trained with him, he made the gym a much brighter place to be.

Pekoe, on the other hand, fought his ass off. He actually won the first round on all three scorecards but just wasn't as big as the other guy. He'll be back soon (at 126-130).

Mike Sawyer

PS. I echo Scott's impression of Sauol Mamby. What a gentle, soft-spoken, wise, & kind old soul. He was certainly in terrific shape! That said, I hope he doesn't fight anymore.

Well..as I stated in the previous blog..should either one of them been fighting that night? No..all that happened was 2 losses(prematurely), but guess who still got paid..MONEEEEYYYY MIKE. I'm sure the cayman islands was a nice mini vacation to add to your resume. Now that Luther may retire who's next on your list to manage?
