Wilson Loses USBA Championship by Unanimous Decision!

Darnell "The Ding-A-Ling Man" Wilson loses a 12-round unanimous decision and the USBA Cruiserweight championship to undefeated BJ Flores tonight at Dover Downs in Dover, DE. 115-113, 116-112, 118-110. Flores used solid boxing movement and skills to overcome the punching power of Wilson, who had a four-bout winning streak broken by Flores.

Wilson's record is now 22-6-3, 19 KO's. Flores is now 21-0-1, 13 KO's.

Wilson should've been more busy, but it was close, could've gone either way.

Digital, how did you score this?

How did you score it ACW?

Honestly, I didn't keep a running scorecard, but my overall feeling (subjective I know) was a draw, or a REALLY close call either way.

How did John "No Mercy" Mackey do????

The conventional wisdom used to be that you had to take the title from the champion. But that wisdom has changed throughout the sport. I can go with the decision, because Flores did enough to win the bout because of his boxing.

It was reminiscent of when Mike Paschall fought Richard Stewart in Ocean City last year. Paschall would have been a fool to match power with Stewart, so he used his feet as well as his hands and got the win. Although, how one judge called it 118-110 is beyond me!

MACKEY???

Never mind I will catch Mackey's score on the news.

Mackey won a shutout unanimous decision over six rounds.

As usual, he fought an excellent technical fight but got caught up in the heat of the battle a little too often.

The body attack was debilitating! Mancera came to fight, but was outclassed in every department.

I thought Mackey won every round,
Mencera was definitly a tough guy with good boxing skill but Mackey was just better in every department. It was good win for Mackey and this is the kind of fight he needs to move up to next level. Thanks for asking Linda.

Thanks Han,

I spoke to Nick and he said it was fine, but the Downs Creds office never got back to me, I should have just come up. Congrats to you and John on the win.

Darnell really has no skill, but lots of power. It was a close fight, but Flores did enough to get the fair call. The scoring was horrible and I had the card like Teddy as well.

Wilson always has a chance to win, but when he really steps up to solid boxers, he always loses. Plus he looked out of shape around the stomach to me.

Wilson looked as sloppy as I have seen him recently. The previous comment about his midsection seemed true. I think that maybe he was experiencing a let down from this fight. After his last win all the talk was that he was expecting a title shot which was crazy as he was ranked only number 9 at best. But if that was what he was expecting and the big pay day that could have come with that, maybe downshifting to Flores took some of the excitement out of him for this bout. He may also have not taken Flores seriously. Oh well, he did lose the fight and now it will be very hard for him, as he is a dangerous, dangerous guy to fight, so who will want to fight him now. And the guys that ESPN may dictate him to fight, like Eric Fields, Aaron Williams etc. will give him boxing lessons worse than Flores. I remember when Ding fought Dana Rucker and the boxing/beating that Dana put on him before getting caught late in the fight. There are better boxers than Flores, with harder punches who will do serious damage to Ding, as Dana did. Basically, this was a devastating loss for him.

Let me possibly shed some light on the "midsection" issue.

I talked to Darnell for a story I did for Fightnews.com (yes that was MY story Brian Kenny quoted from with Steve Cunningham early in the telecast). One of the things I didn't mention was that on Tuesday, Darnell told me that he weighed 204, which means he had to lose four pounds in two days to get to the cruiser limit of 200.

That may have taken a toll on him, I'm not sure. It's a known fact that Darnell is contemplating a move to the heavyweight division. This loss may hasten that move. Whether he'll be successful remains to be seen.

If Wilson moves to heavy look for him to lose most of those fights. he is too small in height, too light in weight, and his punching power will not have the effect at heavy that it has at cruiser or as it had at light heavy. Darnell should be fighting at 190. Keep in mind that Darnell fought for a long time as a light heavy and really mowed down the opposition at that weight. And as Darnell started his career late, he was recording many of his significant wins at 175 and he was 28 or 29 years old, so it was not as though he has grown since then. Probably he has just grown lazy. If he had been able to maintain his career at that lower weight, he would have had more success. You can directly correlate his rise in weight to more losses. And at heavy that will absolutely continue.

hey boxbible, were you at the fight? who do you think won between wilson and flores? was mackey really that good? when can we see him again on beltway boxing?

Darnell wilson has alot of potential but he needs to be in a diffrent weight division. If he used the proper nutrition and trained properly he would be unstopable with the power he possesses. And yes I know he might lose some power with the weight loss but the different weight class would far outweigh the minor power loss. The weight loss would also allow him to have a better defense.Darnell wilson is not a heavyweight nor a cruiserweight and probobly should be in at least the lightheavy division.I have known him for a long time and would like to see him do well at this game.

Congratulations are in order to B.J. Flores, who stood up under late-inning mayhem from Darnell, who rocked him several times in the late rounds. Darnell dusted off a very tricky right uppercut to get back in the game. For some reason, he could just not get off early, and didn't get going until the eighth round. On the three scorecards, only one judge gave him a round in the first seven. That's a deep hole to dig out of. Darnell does look amateurish often, with wild, slow swings and lunges, but he has plenty of skills. He is very quick with his feet, throws correct punches when in range (he was five inches shorter than Flores) and has decent defense. Time and again, he just missed counter-right bombs that would have knocked out Flores. Credit to Flores. In a corner by the elevator at the end of the night, Lou Duva went up to Darnell and showed him how he could have slid to the side when Flores circled, instead of walking forward, following him around. It was a reminder from one of the legendary oldtimers to a big puncher how to cut off the ring and stay in front of your man. I sat ringside at this fight with the renowned boxing writer Jack Obermayer and we both scored 117-111 for Flores and were amazed that others thought that it was close or that Wilson won. It looked very clear-cut. That said, I wouldn't count Darnell out yet, or recommend a move up. I just agree with another writer that the road to a title gets very steep from here and the odds grow longer. It always seemed Flores' lack of experience with top men was going to catch up to him, but he kept his cool and boxed well throughout. Exciting night of boxing in Dover, which did a great job. -- J.S.

Ding-a-ling might've been a tad over-confident. I heard him talking about a possible early knockout.

He was loading up all night and Flores was disciplined enough to stay out of big trouble to steal the fight.

I don't know if all that running will get him a title, but Flores definitely has a talent for Track and Field...

Now that Ding lost, the champs might suddenly grow a set and give him a title shot.

Give him a title shot?
Wait until he beats somebody impressively.he was being beat by Knwoodoo until a last second lucky shot and flores handled him easy.
Wilson needs to lose some weight and get in a lighter weight division and develop some defensive skills or his career will be much shorter than anyone
anticipated

This ws a very bad fight. Flores was "busy" but he also ran from almost any action from rounds 5 thru 12.
Wilson looked terrible, but he LOST the fight be being slow and predictable.

Wilson already fought a few fights at Heavyweight and lost them all, I believe.

He needs to box more so he can set up his power shots. Throwing haymakers won't get it done all the time.

He also needs to throw some body shots.

His jab is non-existant.
