May 25 DC Armory Card Takes Shape!

Here's how the Friday, May 25 "American Champions" card at the DC Armory is starting to shape up.

Undefeated lightweight contender Anthony Peterson will be defending his NABO Lightweight championship against veteran Luis Ernesto “The Butcher” Jose of La Romana in the Dominican Republic.

Peterson (22-0, 16 KO’s) will fight for the first time since January 5, 2007 when he successfully defended his NABO title with a fourth-round KO over Adan Hernandez in Biloxi, MS. Peterson is the top-ranked contender in the lightweight division, according to the WBO.

Jose (27-4-2, 24 KO’s) is making his United States debut, fighting the majority of his bouts in the Dominican Republic with other bouts taking place in Haiti, Denmark and Costa Rica throughout his career. Jose has won his last six bouts and 10 of his last 11. Eight of his 10 victories in that stretch have come by knockout. However, in his last contest, Jose won an eight-round unanimous decision over Ambioris Figuero on March 17 in Santo Domingo.

In the co-featured bout, Lamont Peterson will take on former world title contender John “The Eastern Beast” Brown of Atlantic City, NJ in a 10-round bout. Peterson’s WBC US Junior Welterweight crown will not be on the line.

Peterson (20-0, eight KO’s) also made his last appearance on the January 5 card in Biloxi, scoring an eight-round unanimous decision over Joaquin Gallardo. Peterson is ranked third in the world by the WBC.

The 38-year-old Brown (23-13-2, 11 KO’s) has fought for a world title four times in his career losing to Shane Mosley at lightweight and Diego Corrales and Steve Forbes (twice) at super featherweight. Brown is winless in his last seven bouts (0-5-2) and last fought almost one year exactly to the date of this bout – May 24, 2006 – when he lost a 12-round unanimous decision to Herman Ngoudjo for the NABF and WBC International Light Welterweight titles in Montreal, CA.

A number of local boxers will make up the undercard. Undefeated DC lightweight Ty Barnett will return to the area to battle veteran Armando “El Policia” Cordoba of Miami, FL in a six-round contest.

Barnett (9-0-1, seven KO’s) is fighting for just the second time in his hometown, having been successful back in DC in June of 2005. In his last overall outing, Barnett scored a first-round TKO over Marcus in Brashers on February 16 at the Playboy Mansion in Beverly Hills, CA.

Cordoba (23-36-2, 17 KO’s) has lost eight of his last nine bouts, including an eight-round unanimous decision over Orlando Cruz on May 11 in Orlando, FL. This bout will mark Cordoba’s second trip to DC in the last month. Cordoba lost a four-round unanimous decision to Hector Sanchez on April 27 at the DC Armory.

Rising DC super featherweight prospect Ron “Teflon” Boyd tries to continue his winning ways as he faces undefeated Juan Velasquez of New York City in a four-round encounter.

After losing his pro debut, the 37-year-old Boyd (5-1, two KO’s) has reeled off five consecutive impressive victories. The latest win came on March 8 in Glen Burnie, MD when he stopped tough Jorge Lara in the second round.

Velasquez (2-0, two KO’s) stopped Markel Muhammad in his last bout on May 2 in Miami, FL.

Also on the card will be undefeated light heavyweight Reginald Taylor of DC along with middleweight John Mackey, who was born in DC but now makes his home in Montgomery, AL. Taylor (5-0, three KO’s) is coming off a fourth-round TKO over Nick Collins on February 17 in Suitland, MD. Mackey (4-0, two KO’s) fought for the first time in the Beltway area on February 24 in Springfield, VA and won a four-round unanimous decision over Larry Brothers. Both men are still looking for opponents for this card.

What A Joke! A Damn Rip Off! The guy that Anthony is boxing (Ernesto Jose) has never fought a guy with a winning record. In fact, he fought a guy that was 0-1 and he was knocked out cold. He fought 14 guys who have never even had a fight. This shit is ridiculous. Look at Ernesto Jose on box rec.com. Why are you guys ripping the local fans off. Lamant is boxing a guy that is 41 years old and has lost his last 12 bouts.
I will not spend my money on this bullshit. Now you got Tye Barnette boxing a guy who is legally blind in one eye and has a record worse than Larry Brothers and Reggie Strickland put together. It is a damn shame, because Anthony and Lamont truly can fight. Now Tye cannot box his way out of a wet papper-bag, but he atleast knows it and still tries. I hope the ring girls look good, just might be the only thing worth seeing...

I just looked at Ernesto Jose on box rec. You are right. This is a JOKE

Thanks Gabbie-u just saved me some money

why r these guys boxing people with a losing record? when r they going to step it up. i thought anthony was ranked now? these brothers can reely fight. they need 2 show us what they can do. specially if they gonna box here in washington dc.

Gary Digital Williams said...

Gabbie, Cordoba's record isn't THAT bad, considering Strickland has lost more than 100 bouts.

But the point you are making is well taken.

Ernesto Jose has beaten:

Harrison Cuello 10-3-2
Harrison Cuello 5-2-1
Marcos Hernandez 2-0-0
Luis Antonio Guzman 18-11-1
Tommi Schmidt 6-1-0

and drew with Noel Gomez 10-0-0

John Brown come on people. This show is a joke. That is a shame. The way your trying to take people money. Nate u r trying but your match maker didn't do his job the show is some shit

Gary Digital Williams said...

Before we start berating the promoters here, let's follow what has happened in the last month.

Lamont Peterson's original opponent was scheduled to be Dorin Spivey. That was a done deal about a month ago until Spivey hurt his shoulder.

The promoters also tried to get Dean White to bypass his bout with Damian Fuller on May 12 and take a bout with Anthony Peterson. White's folks refused to do that.

Those matchups would have been better bouts if nothing else because both Spivey and White are familiar names to Beltway Boxing fans. They did not pan out.

I don't think the promoters planned these matchups but they were the best they could do and keep this card afloat.

I just cannot understand why they are boxing these guys here in Dc where they are from. We as fans want to see them box someone who is atleast breathing. I like those brothers and I want to see them in a real fight, not some bullshit publicity stunt. Hell! They might as well do an exhibtion. I am very sad about all of this, I did want to see them both in action, but I refuse to waste my money on this act. Cassandra White! Where are you when we need you. You are the only promotor around that knows how to put a decent show on. I hope you have another show soon. You always have great matches..

Anonymous said...

You guys need to ease up on the promoters of the show. Just like Digital said, there were made fights that fell out because of injuries. People just want to whine and complain. Let's face it people, do you think the Petersons' braintrust (Shelly Finkel, et al) are going to put them in tough for ESPN2? Get friggin' real! How much money do you think these guys make on ESPN? Not much, I'll tell you that. Get a life you losers!

Anonymous said...

Cassandra White is the best promotor DC has right now!

Anonymous said...

Dont get me wrong-them peterson can fight, but they just refuse to fight awnyone with a winning record

Gary Digital Williams said...

Four of Anthony Peterson's last six opponents all had solid records going into the bout.

Jermaine White was 13-0
Adan Hernandez was 14-4
Jose Soto was 18-3-2
Juan Garza was 28-2

Lamont fought guys with good records in four of his last five bouts.

Jose Leo Moreno was 12-1
Mario Ramos was 16-2-1
Omar Bernal was 25-8
Jauquin Gallardo was 17-5-1

The other bout was against Marteze Logan who is a tough customer with a slightly under .500 record.

The factor is the quality of opposition those guys have faced. Some have faced good competition, others have not.

Anonymous said...

Stop hating and come out and support the hometown boys. Remember, these guys are young and Barry and Shelly are still building them. IMO, this is good matchmaking. In each fight, the hometown guy has an 80% - 90% chance of winning. Both of these guys were the second choice as opponent but both should also give the Petersons some rounds. Once again, these guys are young and they're still building momentum towards a title shot.

Bo (act like you know)

Gary,

This is why alot of fighters leave DC when they are coming up, to get away from all the hate. Who wants to stay and represent a place that is so quick to hate on you. VA does alot of hating too. Bmore also does some, but this site is mostly VA and DC people writing, and 90% of the comments is of people bitchin and complaining. Boxing will do so much better when people support stand by and back their local fighters, instead of criticise and bitch about everything.

If the Peterson brothers were fighting on Cassanda White's show
they would be making more money and would be fighting a boxer that is also coming up. She is the new girl on the block and she is doing one hell-of-a-job. She is beautiful inside and out and can be trusted more than any other...

Anonymous said...

i agree with you. Cassandra White is the only one to be trusted right now. She puts on a great show and fans get their monies worth!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Cassandra you can afford to do advertisements or publicity so..you toot/talk about yourself on a blogg---how sad is that?? ESPN does not pay any money it was probably $20,000 for the whole card, that means room, board, food, flight, and purse,....you get what you pay for....the same people talking negative aboutthe petersons will be the same people trying to figure out why the brothers or thompson didnt bring his championship fight to DC...you guys are unmistakeably solid assholes....and most likely its just C.ASS.sandra..

Anonymous said...

She doesn't even deserve to be called a promoter. Didn't her last show draw about 100 people? Heck, I don't even promote and that's only 90 people more than came over my house to watch DeLaHoya vs. Mayweather! You get it, she can't draw flies to a dump! Plus, she obviously has NO scratch if she can't pay her guys. What an embarrassment! If there are any local fighters stupid enough to fight on her "show" then you have been warned!

Anonymous said...

Ms. White is a decent lady. I know of several boxers who fought on her card and she not only paid them what she promised, but gave them an extra $200.00 each because she had such a great crowd. She has never once did a boxer wrong. They are all rumors.

You guy are just jealous because you cannot have her. She is a fine lady who has never once dated anyone from around here

Stop the hating on Ms White. She is the best lay I have ever had in my life and she really talks boxing in bed!!!!!

Guys, this is ridiculous.

I don't have a dog in this fight, and admittedly, being out of the area for so long I'm not familiar with any past trangressions of the promoters in the area, but the sniping is out of control.

We SHOULD be talking about how this is a lackluster card, and maybe if any of us have any ideas on ways to put together better cards, raise more money to spend, and to legitimately give the fans here something to watch and the boxers here a reason to stick around.

All this thread is doing is airing personal vendettas, ridiculous attempts at self-promotion/defense, and as the anonymous boxer said, contributing to the atmosphere that has caused so many young fighters or potentially legitimate promoters to stay away from the area.

I appreciate the nice comments about what I'm doing here. However, I would like to see this particular thread stick to the subject of Friday's card. Cassandra's card is on June 23 at Howard University. We will have plenty of time to talk about that card in the weeks to come.

BigQ said...

I am personally for any promoter who brings boxing back to the city. We as fans should support boxing as much as possible regardless who is fighting especially if the fight is on TV like this Friday. Maybe then some promoters will actually consider DC as a venue in the future. If we won't support the Petersons who will we support? You think it was always a great matchup in little rock to see Jermain Taylor come up? Of course not but the arena was always packed. These have turned out to be showcase fights and I am fine with that. Go Petersons, Go DC Boxing. Keep up the work digital

Anyway, back on topic, I look forward to finally seeing the Petersons in action.

Even if the disappointment over Friday's card is due to cancellations or injuries that the promoter could not control, the point still is that many of the recent promotions in the D.C. area have been poor by comparison to other locations. As a transplant from Pittsburgh, it's clear D.C. has passionate fight fans, but you're getting cheated. That goes for Michael's 8th Ave, Lincoln Theater, Convention Center, Armory, Springfield ABC & other local venues. Poor match making, fighters always pulling out last minute, overpriced tickets, lame concessions, no advertising to build any kind of buzz or excitement, etc.... Somebody who has been to club fights in Pgh or Philly or NYC please step up and confirm how disappointing it is here in what should be & once was a great boxing town.

Well I haven't been to Jersey or Philly or Vegas or Madison...yet, and I have only been following boxing in this area for just shy of a year, but...
With that huge grain of salt...my thoughts...
Some good venues, some good matchmaking, and some good and some great fighters. Now I am partial to these guys, but for me Jake in Baltimore has consistent, distinctive shows that have always been really well attended. Joe Hensley with Patriot Center shows are really solid, and in his promotions out of Fisherville developing a really promising cadre of "Rising Stars". I see DC really stepping up to the plate and working toward getting the Nation's Capitol on the scoreboard. Overall, I see fighters, promoters, fans and commissions committed to doing all they can to be primo...like anywhere...improvement is always welcome, and in some cases needed...but from where I stepped into this a year ago and now...I say Jeff...watch out, the sleeping Beltway dragon is stirring and I anticipate great action and pride on the horizon.

If we all bought tickets to the Peterson's card, this would help with promoting boxing in the area. I don't know if anyone noticed - the Mixed Martial Arts event this month had nearly 3000 people in attendance and the reason its rapidly taking the place of boxing is because bottom line the fans are supporting it. Lets not loose our fan base and help keep a wonderful sport alive. Especially in DC!!!! Help the event and go buy a ticket!!!!

Gary Digital Williams said...

While the mixed martial arts show drew 3,000, the Patriot Center card drew close to 5,000.

Anonymous said...

Digital,

I think you're wrong on both accounts on the attendance. The DC MMA show (which by the way, I hate MMA - it's still human cock fighting in my opinion) drew about 2,000. I was at The Patriot Center show and there is absolutely, positively no way there were more than 2,000 people there. Darn shame too, because those fights that night, all of them, were off the hook!

Anonymous said...

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. To the guy from PA. Sure Philly has had a good scene for years, but Pittsburgh? Are you kidding me? The Baltimore shows and the Virginia shows are on par with the Philly shows and way better than Pittsburgh. Maybe you're just one of these guys that thinks every thing is better up north. I thought that was reserved for people from New York, but Pittsburgh? Come on dude! Our boxing down here is way better than Pittsburgh. The club shows (i.e. the non-televised shows) are probably better matched and more competitive than anywhere else in the entire US, Philly included! I was at the last three Patriot
Center shows and they were all A+ EXCELLENT! The Baltimore shows of Jake Smith are good as well. The Ballroom Boxing shows aren't as good as they used to be, but they're still pretty good. We've got a good scence, except for DC. DC blows!

I am not saying Pgh has better fighters than D.C., because that's not the case. But the promotions are much better (same with NYC, Philly). Advertising out the ass so they get very good crowds. The promoters are flush, so they can pay top local talent to actually fight in Pgh sometimes (Spadafora? Kimbrough? Meza-Clay?) as opposed to top D.C. fighters who split the scene as soon as they build a rep. When a card in Pgh says 7 fights, you're going to see all 7, unlike here. And good matchups too. No 265 lb heavyweights with that mysterious 3 year "layoff" that you constantly see here. The point is this isn't a pro-Pgh rant, just point out that Pgh does more with much much less than what we have here. And Philly, NYC, NJ & Del aren't even in the same league as D.C. I think if the local promoters were better organized with more capital, we'd be as good as anywhere

Anonymous said...

One final thing on the Patriot Center shows: Credit to that promoter who gets the word out and definitely packs them in. But let's be real about that: Those shows are 100 true boxing fans and 4,900 people who've never been to a pro fight before in their lives. They just show up because they heard of Jimmy Lange on The Contender. These Contender fighters are totally mediocre, but selling out in non-boxing areas like Fairfax, Providence, Minnesota, etc.... Don't point to Patriot Center as an example of how good things are for area boxing. That's a flash. Let the Peterson brothers (true top prospects) headline there and watch how many hillbilly's from Manassas actually show up.

Anonymous said...

tickets are free right now, you can call Nat Williams at202-415-9883. From what I understand he has plenty of them that needs to be given away. They need and want to fill up every seat for ESPN.

Anonymous said...

Jeff in Arl,

So we're hillbillies now? Just like I thought, you're one of these guys that thinks everything up north is better. That's why you're down here, right?

Plus, you don't have a clue of what you're talking about. For example, Verquan Kimbrough has never even fought in Pittsburg! Monty Meza Clay has fought once in Pittsburg in 25 fights!

That hot boxing bed of Pittsburg has had exactly ONE professional fight card this year and TWO all of last year!

As far as flush promoters, I'm sure the guys in Virginia at least have to have some scratch. You don't do a boxing show in a large arena like the Patriot Center without shelling out huge bucks! Plus, there have been some pretty good names on those shows: Jimmy Lange, Joey Gilbert, Anthony Bonsante, Purcell Miller, Larry Marks, Dorin Spivey, Dean White, Damian Fuller, William Guthrie, Lamont Pearson, etc. Now that's not a Hall of Fame list, or an HBO world championship boxing list, but it ain't bad either! Especially for non-televised fights. As far as your true boxing fans point. I've got news for you, there are only about 100 true boxing fans that ever go to almost any show. Sad but true! The other people come because of promotion and marketing of the fight. Unfortunately, you can put BOXING on any arena in the United States and it probably won't draw a crowd. But if you put Mike Tyson vs. Evander Holyfied, it's a hot ticket. As far as the show in DC tonight, it's not a good show but I'm going anyway and paid for my ticket! People can always say something negative about the promotion of this show or any boxing show, i.e., "I haven't heard anything about it" or "They haven't advertised enough", etc. The people that say negative things like that don't want to see people be successful, they want to hold people down, they won't support a darn thing! These same people don't know a darn thing about business, selling, marketing, promoting, or advertising. Just like you Jeff in Arl, you don't even know anything about boxing in Pittsburg!

Anonymous, whoever you are, you're just a boxrec.com pretender who doesn't travel to fights outside this area. If you knew anything about Pgh venues, you'd know that Mountaineer Racetrack is essentially a Pgh venue. Most of the fighters are local PA/OH guys. The crowd is all Pgh. Even though the Patriot Center isn't in D.C., we'd surely consider that a D.C. area fight card. Same with ABC down in Springfield. Same with Bowie. Now go check your boxrec site and tell us all how many times Meza Clay and Kimbrough have fought at Mountaineer?

Also, since you're Mr. Stat Boy, tell us all how many times Spadafora fought in IBF, IBC & WBA championships IN HIS HOMETOWN of Pittsburgh with an undefeated record? (the answer is 11 times by the way!) When's the last time a D.C. fighter defended a legit title in D.C.? Why don't we get to see quality fighters like Reid & Corley & Mitchell (except for the Tyson card fiasco) ever fight for titles here? Where has up-and-comer Sugar Poo Buchanon gone to fight lately?

Anonymous said...

You're missing the point Anonymous. Pgh can't hold a candle to D.C. in terms of number of fights or quality of fighters. But the promotions are far better. And as you'll note in my previous blogs, this isn't a Pgh vs. D.C. thing at all. If you've ever been to fights in Philly or NYC, you'd agree that the promotions and quality of cards is in another league.

And save the corny "if you say negative things you don't want to see people be successful" non-sense. I go to all the fights, all of them. And pay money just like you. And I want to the local scene thrive as much as anybody. But instead of making excuses, maybe you should see a fight somewhere else and compare it? Unless you're satisfied with what we got. Like the last Lincoln Theater card that might have drawn 200 people tops. Or the Armory show a month ago where the staff was BEGGING fans to leave their seats and come ringside to make it look like a crowd (same thing will happen tonight). Or how about the Michael's 8th show about a year ago that was advertised as a 7 bout card, somehow mysteriously got reduced to like 4 at the last minute and then started about an hour late!

Get off boxrec.com, borrow your mom's car, and go see what a quality card looks like sometime up in Jersey or Philly or God forbid, Pgh.

Jeff in Arl,

I've been to many fights in Vegas, Atlantic City, and in many other spots around the country. I have never been to a fight in Pittsburgh or in Chester, West Virginia either. I do know that they are probably an hour apart and I don't buy your argument about a "Pittsuburgh Boxing Scene". It's barely a blip on the radar. Unless you think Pittsburgh is in West Virginia! The Promoters in Maryland, DC, and VA are a mixed bag. The best shows I've been to are The Patriot Center shows promoted by Joe Hensley. The 2nd best shows have been promoted by Jake Smith in Baltimore. The rest of the shows I have been to in the area (and I've been to 95% of them from Winchester, VA to Baltimore, MD) have been promoted with varying degrees of abilitiy and professionalism. The shows that Hensley and Smith have promoted are on par with any big show I have ever been to. Certainly far better than in Pittsburgh. Now, to your argument about promoters with deep pockets. If you're referring to West VA promoters putting on shows at a casino vs. beltway area promoters (and those just beyond the beltway) who are putting up their own money, have investors, etc.? Our guys down here are doing it without casino money, they are doing it without a site fee! It's done on a grass roots level and it's a more legit sport down here. They actually depend on the ticket sales! Of course that can make promoting boxing a risky business, but every business has some inherent risk. The Casino in West VA is paying the promoter money for that show. That promoter doesn't have to put up his own scratch. Then they are probably giving away most of those tickets so that Mr. and Mrs. Steeler fan can drop their mortgage payments on the black jack tables! You're wack dude! Go back to Pittsburgh and your hot boxing scene! And you have the nerve to call somebody a hillbilly? You're a moron!

The show at the armory was sold out...no one was giving away tickets...it was live...the crowd was hyped and geeked up...it was great show...there was blood. knockouts and punsihment....im glas so many turned out and alot of celbrities....excellent card...very surprised

Anonymous said...

Anonymous,

So what that the promoter gets paid by the casino in WV? What do you think the population of the D.C. area is compared to Pgh? In a city the size of this metro area you want to blame less than 4,000 fans at a fight to the promoter not getting paid by the site venue? And the fact that you're "not buying" that Mountaineer is a Pgh venue by stating that it's 100 miles from Pgh is wrong again. It's only 39 miles. And they don't give tickets away to my knowledge, unlike the Armory where we all heard on this blog how they were throwing tickets at anyone who'd take one.

Again, you're fixating on Pgh. Why didn't you compare the "grass roots" promotional efforts in NJ & Philly to D.C.?

Fri night was a nice crowd whether they paid or not. Hats off. The Peterson fights weren't competitive, but I don't blame the promoter for that given last-minute back-outs. Let's talk about the promotion though. One undercard fight, then we sit for an hour and a half with nothing to watch, then the rest of the undercard bouts get sloppily thrown on at the end. Typical chaotic, mismanaged D.C. promotion. Nothing works in D.C. (schools, police, public services), why should we expect promotions to be any different? The talented D.C. fighters and the supportive D.C. fans deserve better!

Anonymous said...

How about the last Armory promotion where ESPN2 was literally making fun of the ringside physician who wouldn't even get off her ass to to look at the cut, but instead diagnosed it from like 20 feet away! And how about the 2 minute round and when confronted the timekeeper gave that "what you talkin' bout?" look. And did it occur to either of the last 2 Armory promoters to maybe print up programs for the fans? Wouldn't you say that's like event promotion 101?

Anonymous I'm not disagreeing with you on the Patriot Center promotions or Michael's 8th. Even though I don't like the Contender phenomenon, those promotions are good. And even though Michael's 8th has gone seriously downhill and lost its TV contract, it's still decent too. The D.C. promotions, where the most fans and the best fighters are, are a complete joke.

Gary Digital Williams said...

Jeff, as I explained before, the long break in the action was not the fault of the DC Commission nor the promotion.

ESPN caused the break because they did not want to run short of bouts in case the Peterson bouts ran short. They did not want to have any other bouts before they went on the air because they would not have anything to go to if the Petersons finished within the first five rounds.

As far as the situation with the ringside physician. I was sitting about 20 feet to the right of that situation. The physician was not being asked to look at the cut, she was being asked to wipe the blood off the boxer's face because the referee at that time was not wearing gloves (why, I don't know) and couldn't wipe the blood off himself.

The lack of programs for a DC show is more of a common situation then you might think. Very few promoters want to spend the extra money to print programs.
