Beltway Boxers on Media Rounds: Part Two!

Hope you had a chance to catch the stories on Tony Thompson and the Peterson Brothers on DC television. Both Channel 7 and Channel 4 were at the press conference yesterday.

Today, Jimmy Lange will be on "The Bram Weinstein Show" about 12:10 on Triple X ESPN Radio.

Also, returning Baltimore heavyweight "The American Dream" Mike Dietrich is the subject of two articles. One is in the Baltimore City Paper and the other is on Press Box Online and can be found by copying this link:

Of course, Dietrich will be a part of the Baltimore Pro Boxing card tomorrow, May 11 at Duburns Arena. I should have the full lineup for that card later this evening. Also, I will have the full lineup for the Saturday, May 12 card at the George Mason University Patriot Center in Fairfax, VA this evening as well.

Don't worry about the number of tickets sold, it's the gate that you should be looking at. By the Main Event, the floor of The Patriot Center will be filled. That's about 1,000 seats (it's more but let's assume some are comps and 1,000 are actually sold) right there. Those tickets aren't less than $200. So there's a $200,000 minimum gate right there. Let's say they have another 1,000 in the higher seats and let's say that's an average ticket price of $30. So there's another $30,000. That's a total minimum gate of $230,000! That's not even counting sponsorship. Now you tell me, who else is getting 1/3 of that as a gate anywere in the whole USA except for Las Vegas, Atlantic City, New York City, and certain cities in California, Texas, and possibly Florida? You've got to give Johnny Lange (Jimmy's dad and Manager) respect for that. I've heard he alone sells over $100,000 in tickets himself! You can hate on Jimmy Lange all you want and say he's this and that as a fighter. And that may or may not be a case, but I'll tell you this. He's making a whole lot more money in boxing than anybody else who doesn't fight on HBO or Showtime. My hat's off to the Langes. I hope they can keep on putting on these shows because it's a great thing for boxing in this area.
