BATB Ratings Watch!

Occasionally, we like to take a look at where the major governing bodies of boxing rank our Beltway Boxers. Although many don't hold a lot of creedence in what the WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO say, they are still an integral part of the sport -- for better or for worse.

As of March 18, here's how some of our Beltway Boxers are ranked:

Heavyweight:

Tony Thompson -- WBC #3, IBF #12, WBO #5

Hasim Rahman -- WBC #6, WBA #9, IBF #6, WBO #11

Cruiserweight:

Emmanuel Nwodo-- WBA #7, IBF #8

NOTE: The Ring magazine ranks Darnell Wilson at number 10.

Junior Welterweight (Super Lightweight):

Lamont Peterson-- WBA #6

DeMarcus Corley-- WBC #12

Lightweight:

Anthony Peterson -- WBO #1, WBC #9, WBA #7

DeMarcus Corley-- WBA & IBF #12

Featherweight

Eric Aiken-- IBF #6

Not bad!

Is it me though, or do they need to consolidate the organizations? I guss it's all about the $$$$ though, isn't it?

Somehow they should make the sanctioning bodies have fights against there number ones to consolidate...I know its all about the money...but thats the only way to give more fo the the top 15 or so a chance at it...I want it to be a constant battle with new blood and old,,,not the same 2 or 3 boxers fighting each other....some boxers get 6 and 7 shots at the title, undeservingly....I wouldnt be surprised if Austin is fighting again for a title before the summers out...It sad that you have to lay with King to get a shot....Boxers shouldnt be able to turn down worthy opponents to fight a one seem as a lesser threat...It's a dirty, frustrating, game, forget about the ones whom are most deserving...I heard Hasim, Holyfield, Krasniqui, Brock, Diminetrko, Maskave, and Imbrigamov, and both Klitchkos turned Thompson down....

How about rankings on the biggest crooks in boxing in this area?

Tony is a tall southpaw who can punch. He has one, early and disputed, loss on his record, and he can't fill a phone booth. Since there is no drawing power, no additional dollars that he brings to the table and he is a huge risk to fight, who at the top needs him? The answer is clear and that is why so many folks have turned him down. Also keep in mind that the guys at the top of the rankings are always looking up towards their respective champions to get their title shots. They rarely if ever look down a few spots unless they are forced into eliminators, or if a match is so compelling that tv will buy it. Also Tony is the type of person that quietly has worked on and perfected his craft and slowly, kept winning and marched to the top without any bluster, fanfare, trash talking or flimflammery. In an ideal world this sort of behavior would win him the respect of his peers and of the sports world. But in a todays T.O./Brittany Spears hype driven pr world, bags of hot air like Shannon Briggs find their way to the top. One can only hop that Tony gets his shot before his game begins to detiorate, because there are few as deserving in the sport.
