New Poll: What Beltway Bout do YOU Want to See in 2007?

This new poll question is based on an unofficial award. There was a lot of feedback on this, so I decided to make it a question unto itself.

Which bout do YOU want to see along the Beltway in 2007? There were a number of interesting selections and I added a few of my own. If you choose "other" in the poll, please tell us what bout you would like to see.

Here are the results of the last poll question:
2007 is the 30th anniversary year of Sugar Ray Leonard's pro debut. In your opinion, what was the greatest moment in Leonard's boxing career?

1976 -- Winning the Olympic Gold Medal (6) 10%

November 30, 1979 -- winning his first world championship against Wilfredo Benitez (0) 0%

November 25, 1980 -- regaining the WBC Welterweight title by stopping Roberto Duran (6) 10%

June 25, 1981 -- Winning the WBA Junior Middleweight title over Ayub Kalule (0) 0%

September 16, 1981 -- Defeating Thomas Hearns for the WBA and WBC Welterweight titles (21) 36%

April 6, 1987 -- Defeating Marvelous Marvin Hagler for the WBC Middleweight title (22) 37%

November 7, 1988 -- Defeating Donny Lalonde for the WBC Super Middleweight and Light Heavyweight crowns (0) 0%

June 12, 1989 -- Draw in rematch with Thomas Hearns (0) 0%

December 7, 1989 -- His final victory -- unanimous decision in third bout with Roberto Duran (0) 0%

Other (4) 7%

Total Votes: 59 Thanks for participating.

I plan to start my year-long 30th anniversary retrospective of Sugar Ray Leonard within the next couple of weeks.

Toosharp vs Clearence Vincent Keith Holmes vs William Joppy Coley vs Lange ChopChop vs Sharmba Erick Aiken vs Dean White Tony vs The Rock

Dean and Aiken, that would be a great fight.

Anonymous said...

at what weight though? Aiken's a featherweight and White is a lightweight. That said, I think Aiken would be much too fast.

Anonymous said...

Aiken will beat Dean but. It would be a great fight. Aiken can't make 126 that was his excuse why he lost.

Anonymous said...

Yeah just like he beat Johnnie Edwards

Anonymous said...

Johnie beat his ass. No doubt about it but he will beat Dean ass. When do he fight again anyway. He won a fight now he's back on shelf just like a book.Thomas Snow will beat his ass Toosharp and James Baker Daniel Attah and Lamont Pearson all of them would beat his ass. Take your pick.

Anonymous said...

Back on the shelf, it shows you don't know what your talking about. He fought 7 times in Fourteen months, against opponents with a win/loss record of 117 wins 36 loses. Better check your boxrec.
You take away a late fill in (Marty Robbins) and it's 90 Wins/6 loses.

I don't think any of those guys could beat Dean up. The definitely wouldn't stop him! If Dorin Spivey, who is a natural 140 lb. fighter with a huge KO record, couldn't stop him, what makes you think these smaller guys can? They can't. They may beat him, but they wouldn't "beat Dean's ass" like you said.

Anonymous said...

Yes they would beat his ass take your pick. Dean is ok but I think all of them would beat him. That's just my opion. I can be wrong.

Anonymous said...

I haven't seen Dean White get his ass beat by anybody, but I sure as hell have seen him robbed.

Listen. Dean White is tough. You have to give the boy his due. He's got some skill to him as well. He's more than just a tough guy. He got the decision against Spivey and Doug and I went back and forth disagreeing about it. The bottom line is that Dean officaly won the fight and that's all that really counts. Now then, how could you some of these featherweights and bantamweights knock Dean out and "beat his ass"? He's only been "Stopped" once and that was by Spivey years ago. (I don't count cuts as stoppages like what happened against Meza Clay, I'm talking about knockouts). He's fought tough guys and great opposition in all of his fights. He would beat Too Sharp. James Baker is a good fighter that doesn't get the respect he deserves, that would be close. Eric Aiken was a great story in 2006, but he's very one dimensional. I think Dean beats him at 130 lbs. Thomas Snow had a guy take him to the 9th round who had a record of 2 and 9. He's a young fighther and the jury is still out on him. Dean is too tough for Pearson. If Pearson had Dean's heart, he would be champ now! (Remember Pearson's fight with Casamayor?) Daniel Attah is a slick fighter who gives almost everyone trouble. You never know about that fight. But beat Dean's ass? Hardly. You know something else? If there is a promoter out there who would put on each of those fights, I KNOW one thing. Dean White would fight all of those guys. I bet some of those guys wouldn't fight Dean White though.

Damn Billy D you have been listening and you seem to be getting smarter by the minute. Dean would fight any of those fighters,if the weight was right and if he wasn't called on at the last minute, like he was when they wanted Dean to fight Randall Bailey. They called on tuesday to fight bailey this Friday at 140, we told them that Dean would take that fight at 137, just like Spivey but they chose to go with warrick. Dean sparred with Thomas Snow before the Spivey fight to prepare for that fight and to help Thomas prepare for his fight the same night, even though they are both southpaws, and I can tell you that Dean has alot of respect for Thomas. If you saw the interview with Gary Williams after his fight with Spivey the first chance he got, he asked Gary if he knew how Thomas Snow did in his fight. And before Michael Warrick left to fight Bailey he wished him good luck and bring home the win, so not only is Dean White a tough fighter, he still respects the fighters from his area. Oh and Billy D thanks for the C, I'll study harder next time.

Here are my Dean White picks:

vs. Aiken at 130
difficult for Dean to make 130 and Aiken should be stronger there. Aiken too fast. UD or TKO late on cuts (Aiken either way)

vs. Thomas Snow
doubt it would ever happen b/c of weigth discrepency but eithr White by KO late or snow by UD. (leaning towards Snow)
vs. Lamont Pearson

at lightweight, Pearson wins early rounds with skill, technique, and speed but White's stubborness and good chin brings him through and he stops Pearson late.

vs. Attah

Pick em' for too many reasons to mention. Size, activity, power or lack thereof, etc.

vs. Baker

White is too big for Baker. I see this fight the same way as White vs. Pearson. (TKO late for White)

footnote: While Snow may actually be the most talented of the bunch, I think Aiken beats anyone around here at 135 and below.

PS. Jonnie Edwards did NOT beat Eric's ass. I've seen the tape.

Eric Aiken is strong and he can punch, but he's not real skilled. He doesn't have a jab to speak of and I don't know where you get this quickness thing from for Aiken. Sure, he's not Chuck Wepner in there but he ain't that darn quick! Robert Guerrero, who really is nothing special, dominated Aiken. Dean would beat Aiken in what would be a great fight because of the styles. Aiken would try to bomb Dean out of there, but that ain't happening. Dean can make 130 easy, I don't know where you got the idea he can't. Somebody out there, put on this fight! Put it on TV! That's a great fight!

skinnyscott said...

I agree, that would be a great fight! I still like Aiken to win via late TKO or unanimous decision. I'm not sure why I thought dean was bigger than 130. Now I recall him fighting Ricasa twice at 130 so you're right. I think Aiken's future is at 130 so who knows. However, Aiken seems to only fight in Ohio or on big cards in other parts of the country these day. You were right in being critical of his performance against Guerrero. He did not look good in that fight. He is the epitomy of a hot/cold fighter. One fight he looks like a worldbeater and the next, average. I value and respect you opinions Billy-D. You are obviously knowledgable and don't get on here slinging mud. However, I respectfully disagree with you on this one. Aiken would dominate in this fight.

Afew other fights on a more local level that would be fun to watch:

White-Aiken (Nuff said in blog)

Hemphill-Gutrick

Hemphill-Williams (rematch)

Hemphill-Mayes

Mayes-Williams

Ricasa-Baker

Sawyer-Clatterbuck

Sawyer-Carrigan

Koroma-Almanzar

Vinson-Snow

Thomson-Rachman (obviously!)

Some of these fighters are inactive (at least they haven't fought or appeared on the blog for a good while), I'm aware. But I believe they are young enough and able to fight again.

Whatever happened to Charlamaign Jones? He was a lot of fun to watch.
Any news on Sugar Poo?

No word yet on Poo. Have not heard from him.

I feel that White pulled of a great win over Spivey. You are talking about Dean against Toosharp I feel if toosharp fight those guyright now over 130lbs I think they would be to big.if Aiken meet Dean at 130 I feel that Aiken beats him. Lamont Bayrex is over he has no heart.Baker would do ok early but then he will gas and get KOed.Dean you made me a fan of yours.

One more:

Buchanan vs. Paschall

from what I understand, they fought a good series of fights as amateurs.

Michael's anyone?

Anonymous said...

Sugarpoo is a better fight at this point right now. Later that would be better fight.Mike last couple of fights he look like bum

Anonymous said...

Dean you won a fight and they think you will beat all those fighters. Your sound like some fools. I don't where you people been.

Anonymous said...

People around the beltway. That fight can happen. Dean and Aiken. Banner Pro. Are looking for someone to fight Aiken in March.

Anonymous said...

Only problem is, they'd have the fight in Ohio so us beltway fans would never get to see it.

Anonymous said...

Sometimes you have to do whats right for you. And then come back give your fans a fight.Your was talking about that fight there it go.No matter where the fight is a fan will make it his or her best to get there.did you all Ricky Hatton fans in Lv.

Anonymous said...

And the fight is on ESPN so we will all see it.Now whats the problem.Dean make the call you coward.

skinnyscott said...

Nobody should be calling Dean a coward. Besides, he'd be coming in as the opponent which means it's Eric's people that would theoretically "make the call". The bout would probably only make sense locally where it would draw a big crowd. Dean White is a risk and if they're going to take a risk with him, they'd do it around here where they could profit. Of course, I've been wrong before.

Anonymous said...

Right now world wid who no Dean nobody he need a fight like that

Anonymous said...

Could you say that one more time, you lost me there.

Anonymous said...

Dean make the call you would beat Eric butt. I don't know who said Eric people is Pro. So what take a chance. Yes he's not known world wide. He's our hereo.Dean figt again when.

Anonymous said...

Skinnyscot

You know the deal, if they want Dean so bad, make the call, were only a phone call a way.

Doug

skinnyscott said...

You're right Doug. I don't even know that Aiken's people have Dean on their radar. I think it's just us beltway fans that are exited about that potential area match-up. As I said before, I think dean presents a significant risk and (in my opinion only, I certainly don't speak for Aiken or his manager/promoter)the fight would only make sense for Aiken from a financial standpoint if it were held locally where it would sell out. Best regards Doug.

Anonymous said...

Dean is not on there radar but I knew they were looking for a fighter to fight Aiken in March.on ESPN and I thought that would be a good fight for him. So that every body around the world could see DeanM I still think Eric beat him. When is Dean next fight.

skinnyscott said...

Ooh, one more:

The Grudge match!

Truthfully, at this point in both men's careers, the fight makes sense and EVERYBODY (black, white, latin, young, old, male, female, VA, DC, MD) who even casually follows DC area boxing would show up for this one...
