On Friday, June 1, there was another Beltway Boxer who appeared in Atlantic City, NJ. Takoma Park, MD cruiserweight Willis "The Prophet" Lockett lost a six-round majority decision to Joel De La Paz of Atlantic City by way of Guaynabo, Puerto Rico at the Showboat Hotel.
According to JR Jowett of Secondsout.com, the contest was a dull one with De La Paz scoring from long range in the first round then trying to move away from Lockett the rest of the way. The two banged heads in the third round when Lockett tried to lumber in. The rest of the way saw De La Paz circling Lockett while Lockett would throw one punch at a time. Judge Lynn Carter saw the draw at 57-57 but was overruled by judges Al Bennett and Debra Barnes who saw the bout 58-56 and 60-54 respectively for De La Paz.
Lockett, who scored a majority decision victory over Prince Badi Ajamu on March 10th in Atlantic City, falls to 16-23-6, five KO's. De La Paz is now 8-1, four KO's.
