Quigley Earns USBO Welterweight Title With Dominant UD In DC!

Undefeated Germantown, MD welterweight Gerome "GQ" Quigley, Jr. captured the vacant United States Boxing Organization (USBO) Welterweight title with a dominant 10-round unanimous decision over Luis "La Roca" Hernandez of Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico Saturday at the Sphinx Club in Washington, DC.  The bout was the main event of a GQ Promotions card.

After withstanding an early Hernandez barrage, Quigley put on a very accurate display of boxing as he went 10 rounds for the first time in his career. Quigley landed numerous body shots and uppercuts that eventually wore Hernandez down.  Hernandez stayed in front of Quigley throughout the contest but Quigley's assault negated any offense Hernandez tried to muster in the later rounds.  Judge Wayne Smith scored a shutout for Quigley at 100-90.  Judge Steve Rados saw the bout 99-91 while Judge Paul Wallace scored the contest 98-92.  Quigley is now 17-0, 15 KO's and adds the USBO title to his IBA and Virginia State Welterweight championships.  Hernandez falls to 16-5, nine KO's.  All five of Hernandez's losses have come to undefeated boxers.

In the co-feature, Greenbelt, MD cruiserweight "The Vanilla Gorilla" Sam Crossed scored a fourth-round KO over veteran James "Cobra" Jones of Nashville, TN.  Despite Jones trying to confuse Crossed by repeatedly switching from conventional to southpaw, Crossed eventually overpowered Jones, knocking him down twice in the third round and once in the fourth before the bout was stopped in the fourth round at the 45 second mark.  Crossed hit Jones with a straight right hand that dropped Jones in the fourth and Jones could not beat referee Marshall Cunningham's count.  Crossed remains undefeated at 6-0, four KO's while Jones falls to 4-11, three KO's.

Bowie, MD cruiserweight Luther "Lights Out" Smith scored a first-round knockout over Martez "I Am Legend" Williamson of Akron, OH.  Smith knocked down Williamson twice during the first round.  Williamson could not beat referee Malik Waleed's count.  The knockout came at 2:26 of the first.  Smith is now 9-1, eight KO's while Williamson is 3-20-1.

In a Beltway Boxing Knockout of the Year candidate, lightweight Jahmal Dyer of Baltimore, MD needed just 22 seconds to knock out Dwayne Martin of Laurel, MD.  Dyer sent an overhand right crashing against Martin's head that froze Martin and sent him face first to the canvas.  Dyer remains undefeated at 3-0, two KO's.  Martin is now 2-3, one KO.

Rockville, MD middleweight Francisco "The Cisco Kid" Bustos scored a first-round TKO over the debuting Latrail Purdue of Huntington, TN.  Bustos was sharp as he landed a solid left hand to Purdue's chest that staggered him.  Bustos followed up with a series of punches that dropped Purdue to the canvas.  The bout was stopped at 1:07.  Bustos is now 6-0, four KO's.

Super middleweight Justin Bell of District Heights, MD also scored a first-round stoppage on this card, halting Erik "Candyman" Plumeri of Lockport, NY.  Bell overpowered Plumeri, looking very strong in doing so.  The punishment was too much for Plumeri and the bout was stopped at 1:33 of the first.  Bell is now 2-0 and gets his first pro knockout.  Plumeri is 0-5-1.

Fort Washington, MD super middleweight Leo "Platinum Power" Alcanera won a four-round unanimous decision over George Sheppard of Newport News, VA.  Alcanera stayed in control of the contest as Sheppard provided little offense.  Judge Wayne Smith still scored a shutout for Alcanera, 40-36, Judge Manuel Vicens saw the bout 39-37 and Judge Paul Wallace scored the contest 38-37 for Alcanera, who is now 2-0.  Sheppard is now 0-2.

Debuting Oxon Hill, MD welterweight Rashad "Code Blue" Kilpatrick stopped the equally debuting Martegus Martin of Columbus, OH at 2:36 of the second round.  The bout was a slugfest as both men swung for the fences early.  Kilpatrick eventually got the better of Martin as he battered him in the latter stages of the second round forcing the Martin corner to call for the bout to be halted.

The curtain-raising contest on the card saw lightweight Dante Cox of Laurel, MD win his pro debut via a four-round majority decision over Archie Weah of Norcross, GA by way of Monrovia, Liberia.  Neither man truly displayed significant offense during the contest.  Cox was a little more accurate throughout the bout to gain the victory.  Judge Smith scored it a draw, 38-38 but he was overruled by judges Wallace and Vicens who saw the bout for Cox, 39-37.  Weah falls to 1-8.

GQ Promotions is headed by Gerome Quigley and Jeff Gatling.  The matchmaker was Brian Dillon and the ring announcer was Henry "Discombobulating" Jones.
