The 2016 United States Olympic Men's Boxing team will have more of a Beltway flavor than we previously thought.  Congratulations to Burke,VA boxing coach Kay Koroma who has been selected as the Associate Coach for the Men's team.

Koroma signed on as USA Boxing's resident coach this year and was named the 2014 USOC Developmental Coach of the Year for Boxing.  Koroma has created numerous national champions and World Championships medalists through his work at the Alexandria Boxing Club in Alexandria, Va. A former amateur and professional boxer (5-1, three KO's), Koroma led American athletes at the Junior and Youth Women’s World Championships, Elite Men’s World Championships, the Americas Qualifier as well as multiple World Series of Boxing matches.

Most recently, Koroma directed the preparatory training camp for the World Olympic Qualifying Event and has recently been training the qualified athletes for this summer’s Olympic Games at the Olympic Training Center. He will travel to Vargas, Venezuela with the male athletes for the final qualifying event next week.

Koroma will join Head Women's coach Billy Walsh and assistant coach Augie Sanchez on the USA Boxing coaching staff.  Gary Antuanne Russell of Capitol Heights, MD recently punched his ticket to Rio by advancing to the semifinals of the most recent qualifier in Azerbaijan.

This is the second time in the BATB era that a local coach has been named to the USA Olympic coaching staff.  Robert "Herb" Martin was on the staff of the 2008 Olympic team that featured Russell's brother, current WBC Featherweight champion Gary Russell, Jr.
