On day one of the US Olympic Men's Trials in Reno, NV, Oxon Hill, MD's Tyrek Irby won his opening contest in the 141-Pound division defeating Richardson Hitchins of Brooklyn, NY by a 2-1 decision.
However, a matchup with fellow Beltway Boxer Gary Antuanne Russell of Capitol Heights, MD will have to wait. Russell lost his bout to Jaron Ennis of Philadelphia, PA by a 2-1 score.
Irby will take on Ennis in the winner's bracket of the double-elimination tournament while Russell goes on the same path that his brother, Gary, Jr. did in 2008 by going through the challenger's bracket. Russell will face Hitchins tonight.
At 165 pounds, Marquis Moore of Colorado Springs, CO by way of Fort Washington, MD won his first bout by 3-0 decision over Christopher Ousley of Middletown, WI. Moore will battle Chordale Booker of Brooklyn, NY during tonight's evening session.
