Sad news to report. Johnnie Johnson, a long-time coach and trainer at the Hagerstown Boxing Club in Hagerstown, MD, passed away on August 14 at the age of 77.
Mr. Johnson, a former pro boxer, was a United States Army veteran who worked with the Harper's Ferry Job Corps as its Recreational Director. Mr. Johnson also became a trainer after his pro career ended and operated the Hagerstown Boxing Club for many years.
Among the boxers Johnson worked with were former IBO Cruiserweight champion David Izegwire, Dean White, David Sewell, George Rivera, Juan Carlos Robles and Maxell Taylor. Mr. Johnson also worked with former world heavyweight champion and 2015 International Boxing Hall of Famer Riddick Bowe through his friendship with legendary trainer Eddie Futch.
Mr. Johnson is survived by his daughter, Robin and four sons, Greg, Anthony, Chad and Robert as well as seven grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at a viewing on Thursday, August 20 at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Boulevard in North Hagerstown, MD from 3-5 PM. The internment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Hagerstown Boxing Club, 245 Prospect Avenue, Hagerstown, MD 21740.
