Quigley Defends Virginia Title In Springfield!

Gaithersburg, MD welterweight Gerome "The Showstopper" Quigley successfully defended his Virginia State Welterweight title with a fourth-round knockout of Benjamin "Wildcat" Olinga Saturday night at the ABC Sports Complex in Springfield, VA.

Quigley gradually wore down Olinga with solid left jabs. Quigley wanted to land the right hand earlier but could not get his timing down.  Finally, in the fourth, Quigley landed a series of rights and lefts that made Olinga slump into a neutral corner and his mouthpiece fall out of his mouth.  Referee Freddy Corritone issued an eight-count saying the ropes held Olinga up. Moments later, Quigley landed two crushing right uppercuts that dropped Olinga and ended the bout at 2:40.

Quigley remains undefeated with a record of 8-0, seven KO's while Olinga is now 1-10.

In the co-feature, "The Pride of Alexandria (VA)"  Brandon Quarles stopped Albuquerque, NM veteran Jose Felix at 1:45 of the first round.  Midway through the first round, Quarles dropped Felix with a right hand to the face.  Felix tried to recover but Quarles swarmed him again, landing punches that forced Felix to slump in a neutral corner.  Referee Malik Waleed stopped the contest.

Quarles notched his third straight knockout and raised his record to 16-3-1, eight KO's.  Felix, who told fans he would retire after this bout, closes his career with a record of 11-18-2, four KO's.

Bridgetown, Barbados super lightweight Cobia "The Soldier" Breedy made short work of Trevon Blizzard of Wilson, NC.  Breedy swamped the hapless Blizzard and knocked Blizzard down with head and body shots.  The bout was stopped at 30 seconds.  Breedy is now 3-0, two KO's while Blizzard is now 0-4 and has yet to get out of the first round.

"The Uzbek Warrior" Zarifbek Nishanbaev of Arlington, VA scored a Beltway Boxing Knockout of the Year candidate with a crushing third-round stoppage of Forestville, MD's Norman "The Shadow" Allen.

Nishanbaev, a junior middleweight originally from Kyrgystan, went on the offensive early and tried to swarm Allen with rights and lefts.  Nishanbaev trapped Allen against the ropes repeatedly, trying to land power punches.  Nishanbaev sent Allen to the canvas with a straight right hand early in the second round but Allen managed to weather the storm for the rest of the round.

In the third round, Nishanbaev landed a brutal counter right hand that drove Allen to the canvas.  Referee Joe Cooper immediately stopped the contest at 44 seconds.  Nishanbaev is now 2-0, two KO's.  Allen falls to 6-15, three KO's.

Welterweight Brian "La Bala" Mendoza of Albuquerque, NM scored a third-round TKO over Dontre "Pound For Pound" King of Cambridge, MD.  Mendoza showed great poise and patience and used great left jabs to set up his offense.  In the third, Mendoza landed a right uppercut followed by a short left hook that dropped King for the count.  The bout was stopped at 1:35.  Mendoza's record rises to 6-0, four KO's while King falls to 7-18-2, three KO's.

Bladensburg, MD light heavyweight Eric "The Immortal Man" Govan scored a second-round TKO over debuting Kevin "Mayhem" Miller of Lynchburg, VA.  Early in the second, Govan dropped Miller with a right hand.  Seconds later, Govan and Miller tangled and both men dropped to the canvas.  No knockdown was called but Miller got up cross-eyed and referee Cooper stopped the contest at 2:45.  Govan is now 3-1, two KO's.

The curtain-raising contest was the only bout to go the distance.  Light heavyweight Lavarn "Baby Bowe" Harvell of Atlantic City, NJ avenged his only pro loss with a four-round unanimous decision over Edgar Perez of Chicago, IL.  Harvell, who lost to Perez by six-round unanimous decision in June of 2014 at the ABC Sports Complex, did a better job establishing his offensive attack earlier in the rematch.  In the third round, Harvell started to land solid body shots that brought Perez's hands down.  Harvell dropped Perez with a right hand to the face midway through the third round and went on to the victory.

Harvell won the bout by scores of 40-35 and 39-36 (twice) to raise his record to 14-1, seven KO's while Perez falls to 6-15, three KO's.
