Amateur Boxer Steven Copeland Passes From Injuries Suffered at VA/NC Golden Gloves!

Sometimes as boxing fans, we get reminders of how brutal this sport can really be.  We received another one of those reminders on Monday evening.

Newport News, VA amateur boxer Steven Copeland passed away Monday from injuries he suffered during a bout at the Virginia/North Carolina Golden Gloves championships in Hampton, VA this past weekend.  Mr. Copeland was 28 years old.

According to eyewitnesses, Copeland took a punch to the head during his semifinal contest and turned to his corner and collapsed.  Doctors came in the ring immediately to help and Copeland was sent to a local hospital.  Doctors performed surgery to relieve the swelling on his brain but he lapsed into a coma that he never came out of.

Copeland had been a fighter for quite some time, according to reports, starting in MMA before taking up boxing. BATB sends deepest condolences to the family.
