Top Flight Card Coming Together For May 31 At Washington Convention Center!

The Top Flight Promotions card for Saturday, May 31 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center is almost complete.

As we mentioned earlier, the main event will feature the head of Top Flight Promotions -- DC lightweight Ty Barnett -- in a scheduled 10-round contest against veteran Cosme "Chino" Rivera of Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico.  Barnett (22-3-1, 14 KO's) is coming off a 10-round unanimous decision over Carlos Winston Velasquez on October 26 at the Convention Center.

Rivera (36-18-3, 24 KO's) is a former world title contender who challenged Zab Judah for the WBC and IBF Welterweight titles in 2005.  Rivera won an eight-round unanimous decision over Ricardo Martinez on February 28 in Queretero, Mexico.

In a six-round contest, DC featherweight "The Lion of Sri Lanka" Nuwan Jayakody will face David Warren Huffman of Cincinnati, OH.  Jayakody (2-4-1, two KO's) will try to bounce back from a second-round stoppage against Alberto Machado on January 25 at the Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City.  Huffman (4-19-1, one KO) makes a quick return to the Beltway region, having lost a six-round unanimous decision to Andrew Farmer on May 17 in Annandale, VA.

Undefeated Springdale, MD junior middleweight "The Cuban Assassin" Larry Recio will face off with Coy Lanbert of Summerville, SC in a four-round matchup.  Recio (5-0, four KO's) has stopped his last four opponents.  Lanbert (2-11, one KO) has lost four in a row.

DC heavyweight Scott "Duke" Buchanan (4-0, three KO's) returns after an almost seven-year absence to take on Dennis Benson of Norfolk, VA (1-6, one KO) in another four-rounder.

Manassas, VA junior middleweight Robert Sweeney (2-0) will battle the debuting AJ Slaughter of Ohio.  Also, Brooklyn, NY junior middleweight Renan Ruiz (3-1, two KO's) will take on Dominique Foster of Hilliard, OH (1-4-1) in four-round contests.

  4. The DC Commission does it again!
Here are the recent results of the opponents (including Nuwan J who is an opponent fighting an opponent):
    Foster 0-3
    Benson 0-7
    Lambert 0-4
    Huffman 0-8
    Nuwan 1-6
    Rivera 1-4

For an exciting compilation of talent to present to the ticket buying public, Top Flight and DC Commission presents seven accomplished professional athletes with a combined two wins in their last thirty two fights.

How much are tickets? If the fighters are bought at the Dollar Store, then tickets should be about the same price. There is a very sophisticated smart audience here that knows boxing. Other than for friends and families, this show is a total waste and a total embarrassment.

  5. Then don't go, you obviously haven't seen Huffman fight, two wins here in DC three in the region, cosme Rivera is a gate keeper former world title challenger that guys have to beat to get to the next level, foster is fighting a 3-1 guy, Lanbert has been the distance with guys who are undefeated for 8rds.

And why can't opponents fight each other? You are right there is a sophisticated, smart boxing public here in DC and they know that these fights are going to be good.

  6. you cannot blame brian. he is only given a small amount of money to work with. what can he possibly do? even if he were to be given endless money to bring in better oppenants, then he would have problems with locals willing to fight. im not even a brian fan, but this def is not his fault. he is in a no win situation.

  7. It is tough at times, but sometimes it isn't, I used to to be one of those guys who would look at records and think a guy was a bum, now I am not. Some of the better fights I have put on have been with guys with upside down records.

  8. Who is the match maker for this event? They should be arrested and thrown in jail for this crime that is being committed.

  9. Would love to know which fight is criminal?

  10. let's see you put together a card with such low funds to do so. Sure, I agree the card sucks, but would could you expect with pocket change. Brian is doing the best that he can. Tight Flight Promotions cannot afford but so much.

  11. S.F. Have you ever boxed before? You act like you know everything. This card is criminal and the match maker is the one that is always held responsible for te fights.

  12. If this is the SF I know, yes he has fought and yes he has promoted and served as matchmaker for cards. He is very knowledgeable on this situation.

  13. Don't buy no tickets to this fight it's a dumb club show that's just a waste of money and time, the guys that are so pose to win are bums and the guys that's fighting are bums people are so crazy to keep going to these shows for what you can go to the bar and look at the games and have a better time, I mean the main event who in the hell what's to see the no talent bum he's washed up and the rest of the dudes on there not fighting no body, everybody want to be a matchmaker and a promotor now, all I can say is don't quit your day job, 15 people will show up to this card and half will be the fighters lol but they prolly not going to get paid like they did them the last card lol if you don't go you will stop these guys from having these bum shows

  15. Not defending the card, but Dennis Benson is a decent fighter. He might be 1-6, but he has never been stopped and he has mostly fought on the road as the "opponent." Guys like him, without backing often have poor records, but they can fight and sometimes pull a surprise. Benson had a decent amateur career and was trained by Bobby Jordan, he's no pushover.

  16. There is no excuse for putting on a crappy card like this. If Brian doesn't have the money to put a descent card together then he needs to borrow some money cause he is going to lose his investment aajudinplace

  17. Gary thanks for the plug but it wasn't me that posted the comment

Although I agree the matchmaker is doing the best he can I don't agree this card sucks. Sometimes the fights you think won't be entertaining wind up being the fight of the night and that might be the case here
