DC/Maryland Sends Nine To Las Vegas For National Golden Gloves!

The DC/Maryland region will send nine boxers to the 2014 National Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions May 11-18 in Las Vegas, NV.  DC/MD boxers won nine out of 10 Open Division bouts on April 26 at the Waldorf Jaycees in Waldorf, MD.

The 2014 squad will be headlined by the Russell Brothers -- Gary Antonio and Gary Antuanne -- with both men looking to make history.

Antonio (123 pounds) will try to be just the third man in Beltway Boxing history to win two national titles, joining Sugar Ray Leonard (1973 and 1974) and Dana Rucker (1995 and 1997).  Antonio will be trying to join Leonard as the only men to win back-to-back titles.

Antuanne (141 pounds) will try to make history by being the fourth member of his family to win a national Golden Gloves title joining Gary, Jr (2005), Allen (2010) and Antonio (2013).  As far as we know, no family has had four national Golden Gloves champions.  When Antonio won last year, it was the first time three members of a family achieved the feat in more than 30 years.

Also on the 2014 squad will be Malik Jackson (114 pounds) who earned his spot by defeating Shakur Stevenson who recently moved to the Beltway region from New Jersey.   This is Jackson's second time on the Golden Gloves roster, however, Jackson skipped the nationals in 2013 to attend his high school graduation. Jackson is the number one ranked boxer in his weight class in the country.

Here is the rest of the Regional Golden Gloves team:
