The youngest members of two prominent Beltway Boxing families squared off in the featured contest at the Jeter Promotions amateur boxing card Saturday night at Club One Fitness in Millersville, MD.
Gary Antuanne Russell, with brothers Allan and Antonio looking on, defeated Myke Fox, with brother Alantez working the corner, in a very competitive 141-pound contest.
Russell showed an ability to get inside on Fox, who is tall and lanky like his older brother, and land solid shots. Fox showed the workings of a very nice, long jab which made the bout very interesting throughout. It seems safe to say that this bout will be not be the last time these two will face each other.
However, a boxer in the bout that immediately preceded the feature contest stole some of the headlines from the two more-heralded boxers. Luther Smith, a heavyweight from Level Up gym in Bowie, MD, scored a brutal RSC-1 over Shawn Elam of Enigma Boxing of Capitol Heights, MD. Smith, who is no relation to the former Beltway junior welterweight of the same name, landed a crushing right hand that wobbled and dropped Elam. Smith finished the job moments later, forcing the referee to stop the contest. Smith was named the Boxer of the Night.
The only other Referee Stops Contest of the night went to Matt Coleman of Champion Boxing and Fitness in Rockville, MD who notched an RSC-1 over Bobby Breslin of Club One at 165 pounds. Overall, this was a very competitive card from top to bottom.
