MSAC Chair Bill McCaffrey Passes!

BATB is sorry to report that Maryland State Athletic Commission Chair Bill McCaffrey has passed away at the age of 79.

Mr. McCaffrey served on the Maryland Commission for 14 years and was also known for a long-standing commitment to all levels of all sports in the state of Maryland through his newspaper columns and long-running Prince George's Community Television series "Inside Sports."  As we reported a few days ago, Mr. McCaffrey suffered a stroke and was recently moved back home where he was under hospice care.  He passed away early this morning.  Funeral arrangements are pending.

Mr. McCaffrey also served in the Maryland House of Delegates from 1975-1990 and he is a member of the Greater Washington Boxing Hall of Fame, the Slow-Pitch Softball Hall of Fame and the Volunteers Hall of Fame.

There may not be another person who was as dedicated to sports in the community as Bill McCaffrey.  Bill loved all sports, supported all sports and was a friend to all those who worked around sports.  Bill was as nice a gentleman as there ever could be.  Bill was my friend and I wish I could spend one more time on the set of his TV show.  I loved talking sports with him. I send my deepest condolences to Bill's wife, Bettie, his family, the staff of Inside Sports, the Maryland State Athletic Commission and all of us who had the privilege to know Bill McCaffrey.
