There are two amateur boxing cards taking place during the last two weeks in June and both should be very interesting.
On Thursday, June 20, there will be the first of the Joe Gans Summer Boxing Series cards that will take place at the Patapsco Arena located at 3301 Annapolis Road in Baltimore, MD. Starting time is 8 PM.
The series is in honor and memory of "The Old Master" Joe Gans, a native of Baltimore and the first African-American boxing champion and the first African-American champ in any sport. Gans (145-10-16, 100 KO's) won the lightweight world title in 1902 and held the title until 1908. Gans is buried at Mt. Auburn Cemetery, less than a mile from the Patapsco Arena.
The card will have 10-12 bouts featuring boxers from Baltimore and DC. There will be monthly cards held from June until September. The September card is an invitational one. UMAR Youth Boxing is promoting the cards and general admission tickets are $15. Call 443-286-4378 for details and more ticket info.
Then on Saturday, June 29, Jeter Promotions is hosting an amateur card at Club One Fitness, located at 1131 Benfield Boulevard, buildings M-Q in Millersville, MD. This card begins at 7:30 PM.
Headlining the card will be a bout between 2013 National Golden Gloves champion Gary Antonio Russell and Jalonte Cole. This is a rematch of the 2013 Washington Golden Gloves 123-pound title bout that Russell won. Also on the card will be a female bout between India Speed of No Xcuse and Club One's Amelia Moore. Other boxers slated to be on the card include Drayvontay Speed-Rawls, Gary Riley and Joe Jones III. Tickets are $35 for general admission and $50 for VIP admission. Call 410-729-3900 for more information.
