Sad news to report. Longtime Beltway trainer Vardell McCann passed away earlier this week reportedly of a heart attack.
McCann was a part of the Beltway Boxing scene for more than 50 years, first as a boxer, then as a trainer, primarily at the Hillcrest Boxing Gym. Also, McCann worked with the celebrated "Hard Corps" group of Derrell Coley, Reggie Green, Gerry Payne and Reuben Bell.
McCann was very well respected throughout the community. As recently as this past February, McCann was among many legendary local figures honored by the Potomac Valley Association of USA Boxing for his service. Vardell McCann was a truly wonderful person who was a pleasure to know. He will truly be missed!

always kind to me and was full of knowledge.

Another group of very successful pros that coach McCann developed in the amateurs was Haru Carter, Keith Harrison, Del Matchett and Lamont Pearson. Pearson was national GG champ and fought for the WBA title as a pro. RIP Mac.
The McCann Family would like to express sincere appreciation for your prayers, cards, visits and support during our time of bereavement.
God Bless You
My sincere condolences to the McCann family. Mr. McCann was a true role model for me when I was a teenager back in the late seventies and early eighties. He trained me at the Hillcrest Heights gym and helped me to win a Potomac Valley AAU title. He was an excellent boxing trainer, but his influence was deeper that just teaching me to box. Mr. McCann taught me about hard work, persistence, determination, honesty, and good character, qualities that extend far beyond boxing, and that are sorely missing in a lot of today's athletes.
Rest in peace Mr. McCann. You will be missed.
