It was a rather crazy night at the Renaissance Hotel in Washington, DC on Saturday night. The scheduled WIBA Middleweight Title match between champion Tori "ShoNuff" Nelson and challenger Maria Lindberg was cancelled about an hour before the two ladies were to step into the ring.
Details are sketchy on what happened but this is what we do know: The District of Columbia Boxing and Wrestling Commission received word from the Association of Boxing Commissions Saturday that there was an issue with Lindberg's medical record. What we don't know is why this issue -- whatever the issue is -- didn't surface prior to Saturday. Both boxers along with promoter Cassandra White apologized to the crowd who seemed to take the explanations very well.
The co-feature turned out to be the showcase matchup as Manassas, VA featherweight "The Bolivian Queen" Jennifer Salinas won a six-round unanimous decision over a very game DJ "So Fly" Morrison of Denver, CO. Salinas landed brutal body shots and showed solid head movement offensively and defensively to score a shutout (60-54) on all three judge's scorecards. Salinas is now 14-3, four KO's while Morrison is 3-17, two KO's.
The opening bouts ended in first round TKO's for Beltway Boxers. DC light heavyweight Greg Newby (6-0, four KO's) stopped Ivan Burke of Wilson, NC (0-3) at 2:02 while DC junior middleweight David "Day-Day" Grayton (4-0, four KO's) finished Tyrone Braswell (0-6) at 1:04.
There were also amateur bouts featuring wins by two boxers who will be competing in the Novice Division Championships of the Washington Golden Gloves on April 13 in Waldorf, MD -- Shaundre Kellum-Gee of Mobtown Gym in Baltimore and Drayvontay Speed-Rawls of No Xcuse Gym in Capitol Heights, MD.
Here is the Post-Fight Wrap-Up:
Also, we have an interview with Jennifer Salinas:
.
To be honest I feel the reason the crowd took the news of the main event being cancelled was due to Tori Nelson and her great reputation. The night was not a total loss thanks to the "Ashburn Amateur Boxing".
ReplyDeleteTotally agree with the above comment!
ReplyDeleteWe had a lot of family Who came from out of town to support Tori. Trust me a lot of people we're mad and dissapointed but it was more like "what can we do about it". No need fussing about things u have no control over.
ReplyDeleteHow about refunds
ReplyDeleteSugar Poo Warned all of you!
ReplyDeleteHell yea I told y'all that bitch was some Shyt, but nobody going to do nothing because dc boxing commission is so damn getto, the reason nobody thinks, she let y'all buy tickets and think you bout to see somebody but wait till she try and sell a few more tickets then tell all y'all they not fighting somebody should get her out da way!!! Real talk
ReplyDeleteOther than the fact that it happened on her card, Cassandra White is not at fault in this case. She was ad much in the dark as everyone else. This was a call made by the Association of Boxing Commissions, not DC.
ReplyDeleteAfter doing some research and talking to people, issues about Lindberg date back to her amateur days when she suffered a head injury in 1999.
We don't know whether this played a part in what happened last night but there has been some questions about her health over the years and her medical info, so I heard, has to be really scrutinized as it was by DC. Real Talk.
Its always something when it comes to her shows. She has a reputation she need to give it up but its not her money she keep getting dumb investors
ReplyDeleteIn actuality, she has no investors. I was told that after Saturday night, a few people actually came up to her WANTING to invest in her next show, which is slated for June.
ReplyDeleteJennifer Salinas looks good. And she can box a bit too
ReplyDeleteThat's a lie I found out at about 6:30pm when I arrived that the main event was not going and was told that Linberg did not have a MRI or something of that nature. I believe Cassandra knew all along that that bout wasn't going but held out to sell more tickets.
ReplyDeleteSince you won't say who you are, I'll assume you are closer or know someone closer to the situation than I am. Having said that, I can tell you that I was not aware of the situation until towards the end of the amateur session. Even then, someone who claimed to be in Lindberg's camp was saying everything was fine.
ReplyDeleteThe WIBA supervisor didn't seem to be aware of this at 6:30 because he was with me raving about how great the bout was going to be. Cassandra pulled me aside during the intermission and told me officially that the bout was off. She wasn't aware of this prior to her being told by the DC commission.
The Association of Boxing Commissions would not even allow a glorified sparring session to take place.
I was told by a reliable source that the main event was in jeopardy and like I said in my previous blog she already knew. Not saying she had any control over it but she should've made that announcement earlier instead of continuing to sell tickets. I'm not blaming you Gary you only can report what is told to you.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you and the previously blogger its always something with her she need help. Its said for the fighter at least Don King got fighters paid she is a disgrace to Dc Boxing I blame it on the Boxing Commission
ReplyDeleteMade more money because the main event boxers didn't get any money. Why some promoters want the fighters to sell tickets for their own fight. IF I PAY TO SEE JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE AND HE DON'T SHOW AND INSTEAD THEY GIVE ME AMATEUR NIGHT .....I SHOULD GET SOME MONEY BACK
ReplyDeleteYes you should get your money back but, dc boxing commission is so damn getto, they just don't know that they are making the DMV look bad, when it comes to boxing, but just think Cassandra allways do this, they do med, the day before the fight, why the doctors didn't say then were is her MRI, she new days that the girl was not going to fight but, what is any body going to do??? This is the 3 times she did this, I think it's the last time to, if anybody go's to her shows or buy tickets, you are a damn fool, but when keystone do a fight you get just what you pay for and you get to see who you came to see!!! Somebody should stand up to the dc boxing commission!!!! Real talk
ReplyDeleteYou all also forget: "bouts subject to change without notice." Cards have had this happen all over the world and it, unfortunately will happen again, despite the promoter's and commission's best efforts.
ReplyDeleteThat's true but at least you know ahead of time with her its all the time and you Garry would agree right or wrong its always crazy with her
ReplyDeleteWilliams, why don't you quit it man?
ReplyDeletePromoter Cassandra White has promoted a couple of good fights at the Lincoln Theatre featuring "Sugar Poo" as the main event. This past Saturday, Jennifer Salinas match was definitely a good fight, the amateur fights were good. Day Day and the other pro fighter are always exciting but we knew the outcome of their fights before they entered the ring. The hotel is a great location but substance of show and what transpired did not sit well with me. Without wanting to place blame on anyone, I have solution for the promoter. If you care about your fans and most importantly your fighters, it would be a great idea to reduce your ticket prices by $15 for the May show and bring back the same fighters with additional fighters and upgrade the competition. Remember action speaks louder than words. Show your boxing fans that you appreciate them and that you care and hear their concerns. I'll guarantee you that you will get positive feed back. Please be proactive and not reactive in correcting mistakes in the future. The fighters and trainers put in work and them along with the fans deserve better.May God Bless Everyone
ReplyDeleteThe Promoter Cassandra White should have had Henry "Discombobulating" Jones as the ring announcer. Digital
ReplyDeleteWilliams did a great job under the circumstances and nothing against Digital Williams. Jones is the best announcer in the DMV and he's one of the top five announcers in the United States of America. Michael Buffer and Jimmy Lennon Jr are amongst the Elite. You can't even name another ring announcer other than Buffer and Lennon. This past Saturdays boxing event was a Black Tie affair and I appreciate everybody being able to wear attire of their. However, Day Day and Newby are exciting fighters and every know there going to bring it each time they get in the ring. The match maker need to find better competition. If the competition can only stand one, two or three rounds. I prefer they fight and not lay down. Despite the fact of what people say about Cassandra, baby girl is doing something right and I don't what it is but something. Keep Jones as the ring announcer, upgrade the competition and match maker. We Love You Cassandra
Digital Williams is the best play by play announcer in the DMV. It's always great to see him do the play by play and pre-fight and post-fight interviews with Henry Jones as the ring announcer. That Jones is special.
ReplyDeleteGary - I appreciate your defending the event and local boxing, but... WHY did the medical issue come to light at the last minute? You mean that no one looked into it, or checked, earlier? Honestly, mentioning the Assn. of Boxing Commissions in the conversation as the source of why the bout was cancelled seems off the mark.
ReplyDeleteNever go to a babygirl show again
ReplyDeleteAnyone have an e-mail address for baby girl promotions. I like to e-mail her company regarding the boxing event. I definitely want to see the main event Nelson vs. Linberg. I would like send the Promoter a professional comment.
ReplyDeleteContact her through her website Babie Girl Productions. The link is in the promoters section of this site.
ReplyDeleteThanks Digital, you are truly an asset to boxing in the DMV keep up the good.
