Gary Russell Jr. Says No Thanks To 50 Cent-Led Promotional Company!

Undefeated Capitol Heights, MD featherweight "Mr." Gary Russell, Jr. says he recently received an offer to sign with SMS Promotions, the company led by Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson.  The Russell camp, however, has said thanks but no thanks.

“Over the last few days, we’ve been getting a number of phone calls from 50 Cent’s SMS Promotions. They want us to sign with their camp. I don’t have anything against his team; but we are not interested…I’m not interested,” Russell said in a press release. “Like I’ve said before Team Russell is not signed to any promotions team. I have a manager, Al Haymon, and he is the only person I’m signed with.”

“Growing up with all brothers, our father taught us a long time ago that loyalty is important,"Russell continued. "I feel the same way about my relationship with Al. We consider him a part of our boxing family. Al has been a big part of my career and things are going smooth."

"Our working relationship with Golden Boy Promotions has also been great,” Russell said. "We would not sign with any promotional team without having a conversation with Al. We have watched folks commit what we feel is boxing suicide by going against the grain. We like the way I’m being moved along, and the dates, venues, and television time I have received have all been positive for my career. So while my team appreciates the offer, we chose to decline the proposal from SMS.”

Recently, Russell (22-0, 13 KO's) told BATB that he suffered a hairline fracture of his left hand in his 10-round unanimous decision victory over Vyacheslav Gusev on March 2 in Las Vegas, NV.  Doctors have told Russell that he will be out of action 6-8 weeks.

  1. According to Curtis Jackson, there is no truth to this story what-so-ever. Regardless of the circumstances: why would Mr. Russell tell about this offer so freely? I question his motive, for if true, Curtis Jackson was trying to help the young professional boxer. Why make the so called 50 cents look like a corrupt promoter? Has boxing became an evil cut-throat business? I've heard numerous times of the crooked promoters, but now the boxers themselves cannot be trusted. Wayne Hopkins

  2. And now I see why GB doesn't push Russel jr the way they push Broner. I used to see those two fight on cards together, then Broner just took off like a bat outta hell and Rusell jr stayed on contender status. Now that he says he's not signed to any promo company, I see why. GB has no incentive to make him a star since he's not signed to them...I thought he was with them but you learn something new every day

  3. If a fighter really wants to make it, he must sign with a top promoter. "Top Rank" or "Golden Boy" Broner is a house-hold name because of GBP. Not to mention, he ducks nobody!

  4. What could 35 cents do for Russell that can't be done by Gary R and his team? Nothing not a thing, that new promoter thinks people will be in awe and just foolishly sign with him, good for you team Russell for spurning the advances.
