Simpson, Isley, Robertson Win Junior Titles at National PAL Tourney; Shen Stopped By Olympian Shields!

On the penultimate day of the National PAL Tournament in Toledo, OH, three Beltway Boxers walked away from the Seagate Centre with championships in the junior division.

Baltimore, MD 110-pounder Lorenzo "Truck" Simpson won the 11-12 division in his weight class by defeating Harley Maderos of Brooklyn, NY 19-11.  Also, Troy Isley of Alexandria, VA captured the 13-14, 110-pound championship in an all-Beltway final as Isley defeated Ivan Franco Calixto of Delmar, MD, 16-12.  Calixto's brother, Rudy, lost a 15-8 decision to Otha Jones of Toledo in the 13-14, 85 pound championship bout.

In the 11-12, 75 pound title bout, Kavon Robertson of Staunton, VA won a 9-4 decision over Ty'shaun Humphrey of Cleveland, OH.

In the semi-final round, Malik Hawkins of Baltimore advanced to the finals of the 15-16, 154 pound
division with a 10-4 decision over Jafet Medrano of Columbus, OH.  Hawkins will face Alexis Rocha of Santa Ana, CA in the finals.

In the Female Open Division, Alexandria, VA 165-pounder Dara Shen had a tough time with Olympic gold medalist Claressa Shields of Flint, MI.  Shen was stopped (RSC-3) in the third round.   Shields now will face another Beltway Boxer in former national champion Franchon Crews of Baltimore in the finals.  Crews has won national titles at 165 and 178 but drops back to 165 for this title contest, a rematch of their meeting at the US Olympic Trials.  Crews defeated Danyelle Wolf of San Diego, CA by a 24-16 score.

In Men's Open action, Antwan Robinson of Baltimore lost a 25-14 decision to Dennis Galarza of Orlando, FL in the 123-pound class semi-finals.

Gary in the 11-12 title bout Kavon Robertson won with the score being 9 -4 Robertson. Thanks

Fought the next day. At least he was supposed to. Countess won by walkover.
