Abodunrin Akinyanju Dies in Delaware Traffic Accident!

We have some very sad news to report.  BATB has learned that Springdale, MD heavyweight Abodunrin "Big Bo" Akinyanju died today in a traffic accident on 95 South in Delaware.  Akinyanju was 28 years old.

Sources tell BATB that Akinyanju was returning home from making deliveries in a box truck when a tractor-trailer made an illegal U-turn and hit him head-on at about 3:40 this morning.  Akinyanju died instantly.  According to news and police reports, the box truck swerved right in an attempt to avoid the tractor trailer. The box truck then hit the right rear of the tractor trailer, then flipped over, causing the cargo section to separate from the truck and spilling the cargo of linen all over the roadway. The driver of the tractor-trailer was identified as 35-year-old Abubaker Jamal of Columbus, OH.  Jamal was not injured.  The crash closed I-95 South for eight hours.

Akinyanju had a record of 5-2, three KO's.  He just fought on the March 10th Keystone Boxing card at the Washington Convention Center and won a four-round unanimous decision over Deandre McCole.  Akinyanju turned pro in 2009 after a sterling amateur career that included national titles and being the only man to defeat current heavyweight contender Seth Mitchell.

Akinyanju leaves behind a wife and a baby boy who was just born on August 12.  Our deepest condolences to family and friends.

Fyi the accident occurred on 95 southbound in Delaware, not the nj turnpike.
