Local Ladies Have Tough Time at Olympic Trials!

Overall, not a good start for our Beltway ladies at the Women's US Olympic Boxing Trials in Spokane, WA on Monday. Only one of the four locals made it to the semifinals of the winners bracket.

Tyrieshia Douglas of Baltimore moved into the 112-pound semifinals with a 34-11 win over Latonya King of Harrison Township, MI. Next up for Douglas later today will be Christina Cruz of New York City, who defeated Virginia Fuchs of Kemah, TX 15-12.

Everyone else struggled Monday and will be in the challengers bracket. And we know that at least one Beltway Boxer will be eliminated from competition after Tuesday's action. That is because in the 165-pound class, both Franchon Crews of Baltimore and Alexandria, VA's Dara Shen lost their winners bracket bouts. Crews fell to the youngest boxer in the tournament -- 16-year-old Claressa Shields of Flint, MI -- 31-19. Shen lost to another Michigan boxer, Andrecia Wasson of Centerline, 34-9.

Barring a reseeding in the challenger's bracket, Crews will face Shen in the challenger's bracket on Tuesday and the loser would have two losses and be eliminated from the tournament.

Meanwhile at 132 pounds, Asia Stevenson of DC lost to N'yteeyah Sherman of Barberton, OH by a score of 42-17. Stevenson will now face Patricia Manuel of Long Beach, CA who lost to Tiera Brown of Lehigh Acres, FL, 18-13.

By the way, Brown trains in DC at the Headbangers Gym where she trains with Stevenson.

Once again, the action gets underway on Tuesday at 10 PM ET/7 PM PT and the live video is on Usaboxing.org.

Tyreishia looked very strong in her bout. Asia was just helpless against her taller opponents length as she did a great job staying on the outside and picking her apart. It was just a bad matchup for her style. Tiara beat a really great boxer who was probably one of the favorites to win the trials. Great job. Franchon was outworked by the youngster who looked extremely strong and mature for a 16 year old. She was scoring with a crisp cross most of the bout and seemed to be in great shape. I didnt watch much of Dara's bout but the score shows that it wasn't really close either. Tough draw vs Franchon and I'm not sure if they have faced each other in the past.

I deleted the last three comments. The first two because they were just plain stupid. The last only because I didn't want anyone to think that the response was to the nice analysis of the first round of action.

I do want to thank the last anon for defending the ladies who are, indeed, chasing a dream that wasn't attainable just four years ago.

Watched again last night and Tyreshia is looking very good. Asia and Franchon received a walkover as their opponents were injured. Tiara Brown lost to the same boxer that beat Asia Stevenson. She is a very very skilled boxer but in the Olypmic trials any day off is great. The winners have today off and the challengers bracket bouts will continue today.

Didn't look like Asia was injured. She just looked like she was in their with much better boxers in both her fights. The corner even asked her if she was ok (they recorded corners in between rounds). She didn't complain about either.

It's a shame how people hate on boxers and coaches form their own area. I've always been pro DC; Redskins, Wizards, the Peterson brothers and Gary Russell D.C. period.

Great job ladies.
