God bless him.

Now here's the hard part Lamont and it has to do with money. Actually with taxes, manager percentages, fees, etc. you're probably going to net around $400,000. With all this and 12 siblings that money won't go a long way unless you're smart.

I know it's tempting to want to buy them cars, nice clothes, even a house because it will make you feel incredible to do those things. But it won't last, it won't ever last, if you do all that. If you give your siblings anything, pay for an education for them. The Bible says give a man a fish and he eats for a day, teach a man to fish and he can feed himself for life. Put them in a community college, save on tuition, and let them get educated so they can take care of themselves and live a decent quality of life. You could probably do that for $25,000 total for a community college for all of them which is a darn good deal.

Buy yourself a decent house in a safe, quiet neighborhood and pay cash for it. This is a buyer's market, you could get something really good for $150,000. So now you're down to $225,000 left. Buy a decent used quality car with low mileage for about $10,000. You've got $215,000 left. If your siblings want to live with you you should tell them they can if they're in school and they have at least a part time job and are contriuting to the food and electric bills. That way they won't be a complete financial drain on you.

Now take $195,000 of the $215,000 and put it in a basic savings account available at any bank. Sure the interest that it will return is hardly anything but it's better than nothing. But here's the key to that, don't take the money out, leave it there! You can get it in the future if there is an emergency.

That leaves you with $20,000 in a checking account to pay your monthly bills like power, food, gas, cell phone, etc.

Hopefully you will win your rematch with Khan and get another million dollar payday in your next fight. Be very safe, and very conservative with your money because one day, sooner or later, those big paydays will stop. Boxing is full of rags to riches back to rags stories. Other sports are full of guys on top of the world and end of broke. Look at Allen Iverson for example. He's flat broke! Don't be like that.

Be an exception to that sad story and it will make you, and your family, a true American success story.

Signed,

Clark Howard

Thank you Mr. Williams. I've been following the Peterson Brothers for a long time and one of my colleagues helped produce the piece on Lamont. I'm a longtime boxing fan and reader of your website even though I have never commented on it. I have seen so many professional athletes make so much money and end up with nothing, that's such a sad thing. The advice I gave Lamont is just basic advice for him or any other boxer out there who gets a decent payday. For more tips please visit my website ClarkHoward.com or listen to my show on the radio or tune in to HLN and see the show on TV.

Thanks,

Clark Howard

This is truly a feel good story.
If this mans sucess doesn't make you happy then you need to examine your attitude and outlook
on life.If there was ever somebody deserving of something great happening to them it's
Lamont and Anthony. You have stayed the course. Congradulations.

Clark Howard, allow me to say I have watched your show several times, and kudos for providing your advice here. What Clark Howard just provided is a bit of information that all fighters should take heed to, agreed it is difficult but so true. Boxing is way too difficult and dangerous of a sport to be bankrupt within a couple of years after retiring. Considering all the corruption layered onto the sport, boxers need advice like this so that they are able to live comfortably after this sport.
