UNBELIEVABLE!!! WHAT A BOUT AND WHAT A DECISION!
Congratulations to Lamont Peterson -- The brand new unified super lightweight titleholder.
Let's get things clear off the bat -- Joe Cooper will definitely come under fire for taking a point away from Khan in the final round. It may have been proper because he did warn Khan for pushing, but in a fight like this, let the fighters decide it!!
But having said that, this has been as great a night for Beltway Boxing as I have ever witnessed!!

Great fight! Very happy that Lamont got the big win. But let's face it, Amir Khan got screwed! I said earlier, and I was one among many that said it when Joe Cooper was announced as the ref, that he would interject himself into this bout in some major way as to attempt to change the outcome of the bout. And that's EXACTLY what happened! The knockdown in the first wasn't really a knockdown so I really didn't have a problem with the first point deduction to Khan for pushing. But the second point deduction, just straight up home cooking and incompetent refereeing. Joe Cooper is HORRIBLE! Also, the judging of the fight was off. You can't blame that on the DC commission. The only one that got it right was the guy from Puerto Rico who had it 114 to 111 for Khan which is 8 rounds to 4 with Peterson losing a point for the knockdown in the 1st and Khan losing the two points for the pushing. Amir Khan STILL won the fight with the two points being taken from him. But again, I have mixed emotions because of the incredible heart that Peterson showed in the bout. He would not be denied! But I also agree with Khan when he said that he had to fight two people tonight, Peterson and the ref, who we all know is Joe Cooper. We called it on this very blog that something like this would happen, and indeed it did! They will have a rematch but it damn sure won't be in DC I guarandamntee you that!
Great boxing but a lousy job by the ref. He made it too obvious he was bias in favor of hometown boxer. Hopefully Golden Boy and both camps will hire a ref with big show expierience for the rematch. And not a club fight referee.
Go Peterson! A big step for DC boxing! Khan was arrogant for fighting in Peterson's hometown and writing him off like that.
Whatever, Joe Cooper put DC boxing back on track. We haven't had a champ like this is decades. Don't hate, congratulate!
We are happy that Lamont won but it's a shame that it had to be with an asterisk and a dubious two point deduction by the ref. And don't get it twisted, Golden Boy knew what they were doing by bringing the fight to DC. I watched the fight on HBO and there was significant Arab presence in the crowd. Sure Lamont had many supporters but it looked like Khan had a large presence there himself. Khan wasn't arrogant fighting in Peterson's backyard. He just did what his promoter wanted him to do. I'm sure Golden Boy did their homework and realized that the Greater DC area has the demographics to support big time boxing. But believe me when I tell you this - there is NO way a rematch will be in DC and that's on the shoulders of one man - Joe Cooper!
Great fight. I'm happy for Lamont but I agree with the 1st poster, Khan won the fight. Ref should not have taken 2 points, one maybe to make-up for the bad call on the knockdown but it was a tough call because they were throwing a lot of punches early and the ref had a hard time getting out of the way. Khan did a good job of stick and moving.
BTW, to the poster who said there was a lot of Arabs in the crowd. Pakistanis are not Arabs. They are Muslims but not Arabs.
My fault. How about this - Khan had a large following on hand in DC.

You always hear about U.S. fighters getting screwed in Germany, or England, or wherever else. But we do the same thing over here. What do you expect when you have a bullshit egomaniac like Cooper as the ref? He's got the be the center of attention somehow, someway, and that's what he did in this fight. Khan won that fight. Great fight by both fighters. Would LOVE to see a rematch! Can't believe that Golden Boy didn't do a better job of scouting the refs. If they had done even a little homework they would have known how horrible Joe Cooper really is. Se la vie!
Glad to see that everyone on here is calling it like it is and not being ignorant about the whole thing. Peterson is a good kid, so I'm happy for him in his regard, but the win is tainted. Hopefully he puts the money away and the money on the rematch and doesn't let the ones closest to him put him back in the position he is, or recently has been, BROKE! Look forward to the rematch
From very close at ringside Khan seemed to look like a fighter that couldn't handle the pressure. I can say I was carried away by Peterson's relentlessness, to the point of adoration. I don't see how, with two point deductions, anyone could've scored it 114-111 though. As for the point deductions, they did seem excessive, but from my point of view I thought Peterson won without these. Peterson showed tremendous courage and terrific body work as well as an ability to make adjustments. Peterson followed his game plan precisely as he said he would time khan, but in the middle rounds he abandoned his most effective weapon: the jab. I've seen so many fights where the judges reward aggression, whether effective or not, like in Marquez vs pacquiao III. Why not tonight?

Good for Lamont..But terrible for DC boxing who is going to fight here if they have to worry about crooked refs
lomont peterson won that fight fair and sqare....stalking khan the entire time...khan did a lot of slappy type punching,that didn't get pass lomonts defents....i told everbody that lamont was going to beat khan...lol
Lamont got a early Christmas gift. Joe Cooper was the worst ref I have ever seen. They should retire that clown.

On the performance of referee Joe Cooper:
"I don't have a problem with it. I fought Amir Khan. I think he gets away with pushing you down all the time, pushing you off. So I don't have a problem with it. I thought finally someone did something about it. He knocked out Zab Judah by holding him down with one hand and hitting him to the body with the other hand. So it's just a situation where I think (the ref) did his job."

I am sure the DMV with their first real world champ in over a decade in a near sellout crowd in a FOTY candidate and becomes a much bigger star, Seth Mitchell taking a big set up and winning in competition, and all the local fighters winning as well is a "death blow."
This town has money and will spend it when they want to.
Outside of the five or six hardcore fans writing on this blog , everyone who went out last night to see the fights will likely come back for more and that's what important. Most casual fans will just remember the fun time they had and then come back. That's why Jimmy Lange does so many shows. He's not the best but people like having a good time.
Other big time promoters are going to see the ticket sales here and bring in big fights (although it will be much bigger mismatches to be on the safe side).

The tickets from 9,000 is chump change for golden boy getting their star fighter robed! There is a reason all the big fights happen in a few states their commisions have their act together. Do you think any promoter would want to bring a fight here the commison is retarded you dont know shit about boxing.
I can't say this is a "death blow" to DC Boxing. On the contrary, I think this helps the area.
First of all, Golden Boy may need the DC region more than it thinks. They have a number of our boxers (Seth Mitchell, Dusty Harrison, Gary Russell Jr. by affiliation with Al Hayman, and possibly Fernando Guerrero) and there is no guarantee they will bring the type of money that they would here on a consistent basis.
There is no reason why they would want to use Joe Cooper or any other local ref for a bout, but they do know the fan base is here.
It makes sense to bring those guys back.
I also think there were more hardcore boxing fans than we give this crowd credit for. I saw a lot of familiar faces who come to the club shows and the amateur shows. And this was a hardcore boxing fans type of bout that will hopefully turn some of the casual fans into hardcore fans.
Finally, we don't have to go back a decade to find our last "legit imate" world champion. Eric Aiken won the IBF Featherweight title in 2006.

When you are done wiping your mouth off of the Golden Boy and confusing 3 or 4 big promoters with the sport itself, let me tell you about boxing: More interest in local stars (which this show helped create), more interest in the sport (which is everyone is talking about now), and more people visiting boxing gyms is what this area needs.
