Oscar De La Hoya Questions Point Deductions!

Prior to Lamont Peterson and Amir Khan speaking at the post-fight press conference, Oscar De La Hoya questioned referee Joe Cooper for especially the 12th round point deduction.

"The first one (in the seventh) we can live with, but the second one if that one doesn't happen, it's a draw."

DeLaHoya was PISSED!!!! Horrible reffing! You dont' take a point like that in the last few minutes of the fight, wow, can't believe it!

The HBO crew missed it but Joe Cooper did warn Khan twice before he took a point for pushing. Cooper even told Khan that after the second infraction that if he did it again he would take a point. Khan did it again in the 7th and Cooper took a point. Then Khan did it in the 12th and Cooper took another point. With that said, I have seen thousands of boxing matches, both on TV and live, and I don't think I've EVER seen a boxer penalized for pushing. Great fight. Great win for Peterson and I'm happy for him but it's with a big asterisk beside it because of the actions of Joe Cooper. We knew this would happen.

Joe Cooper is THE WORST REF.

The one comment about crooked commissions is way of base. The person who printed this has no clue.Pannella is one of the most fair directors and he cares about the fighters.

Reffing wasn't that bad. I was in Khan's locker room before the fight and he was spoken to ahead of time too. He's a serial pusher who has used this tactic to gain unfair advantages in many fights. I'm dumfounded by the comments on this blog. I was in the front row. Did we see the same fight? Peterson won and he clearly did enough to support the decision. Kahn didn't do enough for Golden Boy to say he was robbed. Good decision.

First time I ever met Joe Cooper I worked a corner in a fight. Cooper was the ref. It was a 4 round fight and it turned out to be damn close. In the 3rd round Cooper took a point for a low blow that wasn't low at all. There were no low blows before this, this one wasn't intentional or flagarant, and there were no warnings. He just took a point. My fighter lost by one point. I tied to talk to Cooper after the fight and asked him why he took a point with no warnings at all. He was very defensive and a real asshole. He basically said he was one of the best refs in the game and that he had done all these world title fights. I knew that was bullshit just like when they announced him as the ref and said he's had all these world title fights. I would like to see documentation of that. I've seen practically every legit world title fight in the past 20 years and Cooper wasn't the ref. No if you count the WBBullshit Belt and the Flea Market World Title then maybe that's what they're basing it on. I don't think what he did by taking the points was based on a hometown fighter being in the other corner. I just think this guy is such a sorry, pitiful referee and he's so incompetent, that this is just the way he operates. Absolutely awful and an embarrassment to a great night and a great sport.
