Local Referee 'Thunder' Cooper Selected For Khan-Peterson!

Beltway-area referee Dr. Joseph Cooper has been chosen as the referee for the WBA/IBF Super Lightweight title bout between champion Amir Khan and challenger Lamont Peterson.

Known for asking fighters to "throw some thunder," during the final instructions, Dr. Cooper is a veteran who has refereed a number of world title bouts, including Mark Johnson's knockout win in defense of his IBF Flyweight title over Arthur Johnson at the DC Armory in 1998.

The judges are: Nelson Vasquez (Puerto Rico), George Hill (US) and Valerie Dorsett (US). The fight supervisor is Paul Artisst (US).

bad choice will make DC boxing commission look really really bad. You'll see.

Great choice, Joe Cooper is da man

Horrible choice. I totally agree. And Jones I see you deleted my post about you STFU with the crybaby, I am black, feel my pain crap. It's called talent, Buffer has it in abundance and you, have in a little fraction so you are made for the next card Jake puts on!

Local fighter and local ref, I don't like it. It's one thing to showcase Jones. He has a national rep and doesn't influence the outcome of the fight. But bringing on Cooper just cries out for charges of favoritism. I'm not saying that Cooper plays favorites, but why risk that perception at this world class level?

Isn't Cooper that "let's throw some thunder!" guy? Cool.

Did any one see cooper ref the fight at dc star that hard time promotions put on , the fight was Dwayne McRae vs James Porter? Was some serious home town cooking James hit Dwayne with a hook to the head and cooper called it a low blow and took a point then dwayne was knocked out on the ropes and cooper grabs James for what reason I dont know other than to save Dwayne horrible move cant believe golden boy allowed that just goes to show they dont have any real boxing people in their organization top rank would know better.

Can't understand this one.
All I can come up with is that somebody got to somebody and that is the only reason Cooper would be allowed to even participate in a fight of this magnitude.Everybody has seen the works of Joe Cooper and he has no place in the middle of the ring tomorrow night.Joe is not stupid just an egomaniac and he will do what he is paid to do.I think you know what I meen by that.

Yes he wants to be a star "Lets throw some thunder" that does not seem like a ref who wants to stay out of the way and let the fighters fight, he's gonna inject himself in the fight watch! And yes I know what ya mean

Way to go Coop, great choice. This Ref let's you fight!!

To the comment that says Cooper wants to inject himself in the fight - you are exactly right! I have seen Cooper take points without warnings for minor infractions like borderline low blows that had no effect on the receiver of that low blow. He is absolutely terrible! He wants to be the center of attention which is the exact opposite of a good ref. When a ref is good, or even great in the case of a Steve Smoger, you hardly ever see them. Bad choice and it will make us look bad to an international audience.

There is only one way that I would have picked Joe Cooper as the ref and here is the scenario in which that would happen. Let's say there are two, and only two refs available for the fight tonight. And let's say those two refs were Joe Cooper and Chris Wollenson. Well then I would have to pick Joe Cooper because Chris Wollenson is the ONLY ref in the entire world that is worse than Joe Cooper! If there are 1,000 pro boxing refs in the world then #999 is Joe Cooper and #1,000 is Chris Wollenson! #1 is Steve Smoger!

I like Chris Wollenson and respect him as a ref. Unlike Joe Cooper, Wollenson is available after a fight and will explain his decisions to the casual observer. I've found him very approachable and well spoken.

I think he got a bum rap for stopping the Jimmy Lange/Joey Gilbert fight as early as he did. Joey was having Jimmy for breakfast and letting the fight continue would have only prolonged the inevitable. (And as we later learned, Joey's dominance had little to do with his skill and hard work.)

It is too bad that Wollenson has been blackballed from all subsequent Jimmy Lange events. And it's beginning to appear that Joe Cooper is getting a little too cozy with the Langes. I think that the afformentioned point deduction with no warning or ill-effect to the wronged boxer happened to Jimmy Lange's last opponent.

Watching the fight this Cooper is terrible.

Obviously the people who said "thunder" would inject himself and try to be were dead-on right. This guy is a bum and made mockery if DC boxing. Great insight on what was going to happen by alot of folks on this one.
