Khan-Peterson to 'Definitely Take Place' In DC December 10!

According to a tweet by ESPN.com Boxing Writer Dan Rafael, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer says the December 10th championship bout between WBA Junior Welterweight titleholder Amir Khan and mandatory challenger Lamont Peterson will "definitely take place in Washington, DC."

No official word on where the bout will be held in the city, although Constitution Hall has been mentioned previously. There can also be a possibility that Golden Boy may be watching what might happen with the NBA labor situation, because having no season could free up dates at the Verizon Center.

Lem Satterfield of Ringtv.com is also reporting Schaefer as saying that undefeated Brandywine, MD heavyweight and Golden Boy prospect Seth "Mayhem" Mitchell will "definitely be on the card."

To all who contacted Golden Boy Promotions -- thanks so much for your efforts! Next step: getting our very own ring announcer Discombobulating Jones to be the ring announcer for this event!!

By the way, the bout is slated to be televised by HBO which is very significant. The bout would be the first time that HBO has televised a boxing card in the Beltway region in 18 years!! The last time was the Riddick Bowe-Jesse Ferguson card at RFK Stadium on May 22, 1993.

The December 10th fight between IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (26-1, 18 KO’s) and his No.1 IBF mandatory challenger 27-year-old Lamont Peterson (29-1-1, 15 KO’s) will be taking place in Washington, DC, according to boxing news from Yahoo and Golden Boy Promoter Richard Schaefer. The fight will take place in the United States capital, but the venue still hasn’t been selected as of yet.

This wasn’t Khan’s first choice for an opponent. He wanted to fight 35-year-old WBC light welterweight champion Erik Morales and WBO light welterweight champ Timothy Bradley, but neither of them showed any interest in fighting Khan at this time. Bradley is mired in legal problems and Morales is looking in another direction for his first title defense.

Peterson isn’t the biggest fight that Khan could have chosen in the division. A rematch between Khan and Marcos Maidana or Khan vs. Breidis Prescott, likely would have attracted a lot more interest and would give Khan a bigger payday than the light hitting Peterson. However, Prescott already knocked Khan out in one round, and Maidana had Khan staggering around the ring in his fight with Khan last December. Khan and his team opted to face the lesser puncher Peterson in what has to leave you scratching your head and wondering why. Maidana is the current WBA light welterweight regular champ, and it would have been a great fight.

Peterson was easily beaten by Timothy Bradley by a lopsided 12 round decision in December 2009. Peterson looked equally horrible in the early going against Victor Ortiz last year in December, getting knocked down twice by Ortiz. However, the judges gave Peterson a 10 round draw. HBO saw Ortiz winning the fight handily, as did I. It’s difficult to see what Khan gains from fighting Peterson other than trying to better the performance that Bradley put in against him. That’s going to be hard to do because Bradley completely dominated the fight, and I can see Khan winning in the same fashion against Peterson.

WBA and IBF Junior Welterweight champion Amir Khan will defend his IBF crown against mandatory challenger Lamont Peterson on Saturday, December 10 in Washington, DC. No word yet on where the bout will be held in the Nation’s Capitol. Khan, a native of Bolton, Lancashire, UK, (26-1, 18 KO’s) will be making the first defense of his IBF title that he captured from Zab Judah on July 23 in Las Vegas. Khan became fond of DC after a recent visit to the city for a celebration of Muslim athletes. That visit helped put DC ahead of Detroit, MI and Montreal, CA to get this contest.
That was good news for the DC native Peterson (29-1-1, 15 KO’s) who will try to become the first DC-area boxer to win a world title at home since former world champs Keith Holmes and Mark “Too Sharp” Johnson accomplished the feat on the same card in April of 1999 at the MCI (now Verizon) Center. Peterson earned the title shot when he knocked out Victor Cayo in the 12th round on July 29 in Las Vegas. This will be Peterson’s second chance at a world title. Peterson fought well but lost a bid for the WBO Junior Welterweight title to Timothy Bradley by 12-round unanimous decision on December 12, 2009 in Rancho Mirage, CA.

Golden Boy Promotions will promote the show and Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer said that undefeated Brandywine, MD heavyweight and Golden Boy prospect Seth “Mayhem” Mitchell (23-0-1, 17 KO’s) will be on the card.

Yes Jones! Las Vegas is Michael Buffer's town. But DC is Henry "Discombobulating" Jones all the way. If they want to make this a DC event, they need to start with the voice!

HEY BELTWAY BOXING FANS I POSE THE QUESTION TO YOU

SHOULD HBO LET DC'S OWN HENRY JONES ANNOUNCE THE FIGHT OR SHOULD THEY DO WHAT THEY ALWAYS DO AND USE THEIR OWN MICHAEL BUFFER?

It looks like Gary Russell will NOT be a part of this card at this point.

Although Richard Schaefer, the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions wanted to put Russell on the December 10card, he told ESPN.com that there would not be enough TV spots for Russell.

Schaefer said GBP will put Russell on a November 26 HBO card instead. Russell will be on TV for that one.

peterson need world class sparring to get over this fight

Gary do you think they well use local judges and refs in this fight?

THey need Jimmy Lange to put asses in the seats, these guys will not draw 2500 people

It's a possibility that a local ref could work this fight. Kenny Chevalier has worked numerous title fights.

Having said that, I would be surprised if Khan's camp would allow it, especially with a DC fighter in the bout. I think an outsider will work the main event.

I think if its promoted correctly there could be a good turnout. There is a huge muslim population in DC and outlaying area who may come support Khan solely for that. Plus I think there would be alot of drive ins from the New York and New England area. Sad to say, but I think Khan will have more supporters than Peterson will get from his own hometown.

Yes I think khan well have more fans the petersons fought at the dc armoury and not that big of a turn out.

Gary a lot of people critisized petersons camp the first time he was offered the khan fight and the fight did not happen over petersons camp holding out on some issues rematch clause money..etc. Any idea of the new terms?

The NBA situation has nothing to do with the Verizon Center's availability for the 10th. Georgetown's hosting a home game against Howard that night, which is a pretty big draw locally.

DAR Constitution Hall or the Convention Center look the most likely to me, at least if they want to keep it in the District. RFK and Nats stadium are outdoors (won't work for a December fight), and the Stadium Armory would be too small. It's also too old and would look bad on HBO.

DAR's a decent size, has good access for cameras and is in downtown.

Verizon Center's ideal, but spoken for. I want to hit this up, but never understand how they can set a fight and date without a venue chosen/local boxing commission's official approval (check out the DC boxing commission's site- next meeting's OCT 13 and no word anywhere on that site about Khan or Peterson).

EP soto one thing u got to understand is dc is the one that needs this fight here , golden boy could give too shits and take this fight to vegas so keep that in mind hot shot the dc commision well bend over backwards for them

Anonymous said...

and learn some English "hot shot". Do you mean, Golden Boy could give TWO shits...and the DC commission WILL bend over backwards for them. (which we won't)

No wonder why DC Boxing is in such trouble, because people get information from ignorant retards who can't even speak and write English to spread a simple message.

The fight will be held at DC Star. Kahn vs. Peterson is a main event and deserves a decent venue.

so you say no we wont bend over for them and then say no wonder the dc boxing commision is in such trouble, so make up your mind are you with the commison? And it sounds like you are addmiting they are not all together "in trouble". The fight is big tax revune for the city so yes dc wants the fight and if they fuck it up the higher ups r gonna say hey get it together! So my friend you can spell but you still dont get how things work do you?
