Nelson to Face 'Monster' Garland in Female Bout September 10!

It is official. Newly-crowned WBC Female Middleweight champion Tori Nelson of Ashburn, VA has been added to the Saturday, September 10 ICE Promotions card at the George Mason University Patriot Center in Fairfax, VA.

Nelson (4-0-1) will take on former National Golden Gloves champion Michelle "The Monster" Garland of Philadelphia, PA (1-1-1) in a four-round non-title bout.

Nelson won the title with a split decision over Lorissa Rivas on July 29 in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. Nelson's story -- juggling three jobs plus a boxing career -- has inspired many people. One example is featured in this blog called "I Am Modern." The blog is listed as a lifestyle magazine for the modern woman. Writer Shelly McCullers posted this article about Nelson.

Why is it a non title bout?

Because it is only four rounds and Tori does have a few months before she has to put the belt on the line.

How did Tori get the WBC title with just four wins and a draw? Are the women's ranks really that thin, or was it some kind of a fluke where she was brought in as a tune-up opponent and ended up with a major upset?

Why do people always have to be negative. Who cares that she only has 4fights and a draw and she is the wbc champ. That is a bigger reason to congratulate her on her wbc crown with only 5fights. Keep working hard tori

congratulations!!! Now put the damn thing on the line instead of waiting until you HAVE TO DO IT. She won it with only 4 fights so put it up! Whats the big deal. A real champ doesn't have to be MADE to put the belt on the line. If you want the respect to be called the champ, then respect the title and defend it.

And people wonder why they get no respect?

SHE JUST WON THE DAMN BELT...SHE DOESENT HAVE TO PUT IT UP ASAP! TORI HAS ALL MY RESPECT. SHE SAID SHE WAS GOING TO WIN AND SHE DID!

I'm not being negative, but merely asking what I think is a fair question. In the men's game, a fighter with just three wins will not get a major title shot. I'm asking if this is common in the women's game.

There just aren't that many active women professional boxers. According to boxrec, Tori is number one of just five female boxers in her division in the USA, and second of just 17 in the world.

Still, a belt is a belt, and Tori should be proud of what she's achieved.

according to reliable sources nelson is under contract for her next 2 title defenses.the 4 round non title affair would be a tune up fight for a tentative oct.28 return to trinidad rematch with lorrisa rivas.Tori is not ducking anyone and would love to defend her belt in front of her home crowd.Hoping this clears things up for some people.

Beleive me no one is confusing nelson with mayweather. Tori realizes that it will take time and more fights to get any respect in womans boxing, true respect is earned not just given and talking to tori she seems willing to do that.
