University of Maryland Boxer Wins National Collegiate Championship; Naval Academy Squad Finishes Second!

For the first time since the University of Maryland Boxing Club was formed in 2004, the club has a National Collegiate Boxing Association (NCBA) champion. His name is Ryan Roach, who won the 165-pound title this past Saturday at West Point, NY. Roach defeated Angelo Lonero of the Naval Academy to win the title.

Roach is just the fourth boxer from the University of Maryland to win a national title. When the NCAA recognized boxing as an intercollegiate sport, Benny Alperstein, Vinny Palumbo, and Garry Garber all won national championships. Roach's is the first for the school in 50 years.

Navy finished second in the team standings behind the host team, the US Military Academy (Army) who won an unprecedented fourth straight national title. Navy had two individual titleholders -- Tom Payne won the 119-pound title defeating Matt DeMars of the Air Force and Luke Culver defeated John Maddux of Army to capture the 185-pound title.
