On the heels of the Beltway Boxing Community losing one legend in York Van Nixon, now comes word that local trainer and manager Tom Browner passed away earlier today at the age of 70. Mr. Browner battled bone cancer for a number of years.
I will work on a full obituary later this week, but Mr. Browner was a major part of the community for many years. Mr. Browner was the original trainer and manager for heavyweight contender Tony "The Tiger" Thompson throughout his career and also trained, among others, Darryl Lattimore.
Mr. Browner was a soft-spoken man, but his actions spoke volumes. He will be truly missed.

On behalf of my mom Irene (Tom's wife)& myself, Kimberly Browner( Tom's daughter), I want to thank you all for your condolences. I am so delighted that you all thought so highly of my father. He put many years nearly 30 or more years into the boxing arena and assisted many young boys and men not only in boxing, but being a positive male role model. I would like to thank each and every one of you for your positive words. God Bless You.

Tom will definetely be missed. It was always a pleasure to talk to him.I will miss you!Thank you for everything. boxing fan.
I still remember his promotion(s) in Silver Spring. I got to know Tom a little bit back in the day when I was covering boxing for the Montgomery Journal, and he was certainly a pleasure. Very committed, a positive influence on boxing and those around him. To Kim Browner, the rest of the family, my friend Tony Thompson (who I haven't seen in a while) and everyone else around here, my sympathies.

One of the first men I met in the sport... a man that exemplified what so many in boxing are and are often overlooked. A man of his word. Mr. Browner was a pleasure to meet and have the pleasure to know through the years and I am truly saddended to hear of his passing.

Tom Browner was a man of great character whose passion for boxing was always evident. He had a positive influence on numerous young boxers who benefitted from his wise tutelage both in, and outside, of the ring. I recall Tom once expressing tremendous pride when talking about one of his former boxers who went on to pursue a successful career in law enforcement. Tom Browner will truly be missed, and the Maryland State Athletic Commission extends its deepest condolences to the Browner family.
