Baltimore's Tyrell "Da Show Shock'A" Samuel will try to win his first major regional title when he challenges "The Pride of Portsmouth (VA)" Dorin Spivey for the NABA Lightweight title on Saturday, April 3 at the Scope Arena in Norfolk, VA.
Samuel, the Maryland State Super Featherweight champion (14-3, six KO's), fights for the first time at 135 pounds. This will be his first bout since winning two bouts in the trilogy with Gustavo Dailey in 2009. Spivey (36-6, 29 KO's) will be making the first defense of his title that he won on November 6 with a fourth-round TKO over Meacher Major in Buffalo, NY.

Don't hold your breath for this show, much less this fight, to happen. This very promoter has gotten licensed each of the last 7 years and has the same song and dance each time which is 6 or 8 dates per year at the Norfolk Scope. The fights never happen and boxing in The Tidewater area is always badly affected as a result. What will happen is that the date will get pushed back to May and then it will be cancelled entirely after that. But come 2011this same Promoter will get licensed once again and spin the same tale about numerous dates at the same venue. My guess is the only reason this guy keeps getting licensed is because the VA Boxing Commission won't turn down the money for the licensing. It's a darn shame because it hurts the sport in VA, The Tidewater Area, and all over. My suggestion to Mr. Samuel, Mr. Spivey, and every other fighter, manager, trainer, etc. associated with this card is to fully understand that this show will never happen. If it does happen it would be like hitting the lotto.
Signed,
Someone who knows and someone who cares
His nickname is "Dangerous"Dorin Spivey, read some updated info!!!
Mama call him The Pride of Portsmouth, Ima call him Pride of Portsmouth!
Besides, Dangerous Dorin doesn't sound right. With a name like Dorin his nickname should be The Portrait, as in The Portrait of Dorian Gray (I know it's not Dorin but it's close).
I heard they had a press conference today. Interesting. But write this down, mark it with an X, stamp it, and mail it first class to whomever you want - THIS SHOW WILL NOT HAPPEN! Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me 64 times, you took the short bus to school!
You can take him Samuel!!!!
"You can take him Samuel!!!"
Samuel - you want to take something? Then take my advice and call 804-367-0186. That's the phone number for the VA Boxing Commission. The Director is Dave Holland, ask for him. And you should ask him the following questions. 1)Is the show going to happen? 2) Does the Promoter have a bond on file? 3) Has the Promoter paid his event fee? 4)Does the Promoter have his venue rental agreement in order?
Samuel, or one of his reps., ask the commissioner those questions and report back here at BATB.
This PSA has been provided to you by someone who wants to keep the bums out of boxing!
Still don't believe me about this show not happening? Go to the Norfolk Scope website and you will see as of 3/11/10 at 6:15 tickets are not on sale. They are not on sale on ticketmaster either. And this for a show in a huge arena that is 23 days away! It's on the schedule but tickets aren't on sale! That could be for only one reason, the promoter hasn't paid his up front money to the venue and the venue will not allocate tickets until they get the money. Big Ticketmaster venues like The Scope in Norfolk, The Patriot Center, etc. will not release tickets until they get paid a security deposit which is typically 1/2 the base rental of the facility. Smaller facilities, where the promoter usually prints his own tickets aren't like that. But Ticketmaster houses are. The show is not happening. Call the VA Boxing Commission at 804-367-0186 see what they say and post your information here. The more information we have the better!
