March 6 Patriot Center Card Loaded With Beltway Talent!

The ICE Promotions Boxing card slated for Saturday, March 6 at the George Mason University Patriot Center in Fairfax, VA is loaded with talent from the Beltway region and a few of the matches have Beltway Boxers facing each other.

We already know about the main event for the card -- the 12-round WBC USNBC Junior Middleweight title bout between champion Jimmy Lange of Great Falls, VA (31-3-2, 21 KO's) and "The White Tiger" Chase Shields of Houston, TX. (29-3-1, 14 KO's)

The co-feature will be very interesting as well. Undefeated Arlington, VA lightweight "The Mongolian Mongoose" Bayan Jargal will take on Louie Leija of San Antonio, TX in an eight-round contest. Jargal (14-0-2, nine KO's) is coming off a six-round unanimous decision over Guadalupe Diaz on December 11 in Reno, NV but the last time Jargal appeared at the Patriot Center, he had to settle for a draw against Richard Lee Hall on September 26.

Leija (21-14-1, 15 KO's) comes from a boxing family. His cousin, Jesse James Leija, was a two-time world champion. Louie Leija has fought a who's who of competitors in the lightweight division including Floyd Mayweather, Jr., Ben Tackie, Derrick Gainer and Emmanuel Augustus. However, Leija took a nine-year absence from the sport from 1999-2008 and has not won a bout since 1999 -- he is currently on a seven-bout losing streak.

In another eight-round contest, Fort Valley, VA junior welterweight Andrew "The Doo Man" Farmer will take on Laurel, MD's Ikem "The Warrior" Orji in an eight-round contest. Farmer (13-1, seven KO's) is coming off an eight-round unanimous decision over Ryan Belasco on October 16 at Du Burns Arena in Baltimore. Farmer would also like to change his fortunes at the Patriot Center -- the site of his only pro loss. Farmer lost a four-round majority decision to Ken Humphreys on December 9, 2006.

Orji (5-2, one KO) lost a six-round split decision to Issac Suarez on May 8 in Philadelphia, PA. Orji has lost two of his last four but his two wins have come in intra-Beltway bouts against Ron Boyd and Ramondo Elliott.

Laurel, MD heavyweight "The Big Ticket" Dwayne McRae returns to action in his first scheduled six-round contest as he takes on Theron Johnson of Chicago, IL. McRae (5-2, three KO's) has lost two of his last four, including a four-round majority decision loss to Bernell Stewart on December 20 at Rosecroft Raceway in Fort Washington, MD. Johnson (3-2) is coming off a six-round unanimous decision loss to Tor Hamer on August 26 in New York City.

Undefeated Haymarket, VA welterweight Juan "The Savior" Rodriguez returns to action in a four-round contest against Glenarden, MD's Damian Butler. Rodriguez (3-0, three KO's) is coming off an injury and he hasn't fought since his last appearance in the Patriot Center, winning a first-round TKO against Dwartney Wortham on May 2. Butler (0-2) lost a four-round unanimous decision to Jesus Caro on October 3 in Lincoln, RI.

Two other All-Beltway bouts round out the card. Dumfries, VA cruiserweight "Cold Blood" Patrick Budd will take on Ellicott City, MD's "Big Mac Attack" Robert McConnell in a four-round encounter. Budd (2-1, one KO) is coming off his first pro loss -- a four-round unanimous decision to Charles Hayward on December 4 in Philadelphia, PA. McConnell (4-3, two KO's) lost by third-round TKO to Kevin Johnson on April 30 at Martin's West in Woodlawn, MD.

Also, Lawrence Jones, a junior middleweight fighting out of Reston, VA (2-2, one KO) will battle Vincent "The Beast" Batteast of Severn, MD (1-1-1). Jones has not fought since being stopped in the first round by Shawn Estrada on November 29, 2008 in Ontario, CA. Batteast is coming off a four-round unanimous decision over Allen Perkins on December 11 at the Shipley Arena in Westminster, MD.

Boxing is definitely bringing in the new decade the right way. Not just the DMV area but everywhere. Hope we can keep this up.

That Jimmy Lange fight looks like a good one. Going to do some research on his opponent later. When do tickets go on sale??

Gary Digital Williams said...

I believe tickets are on sale now. Go to www.ipboxing.com for more details.

Alec Kohut said...

Ticketmaster is selling tickets too.
I think I'll be sitting in the cheap seats for this card. I can't say I'm impressed with any of the bouts on the card. Not even the main event.

Asim said...

some good matches...Budd v McConnell and Jones v Batteast, looking forward to.

Anonymous said...

Kohut you are never impressed with any body in boxing.
JD Brown has put together another fine card.and I doubt if you would buy a costly seat anyway.your a cheapscate who just likes to hear yourself talk.

Alec Kohut said...

I stand corrected, the guy that hasn't won a fight in over a DECADE, vs. Jargal, oh yeah, wonderful.
And, that Ikem Orji fighting against Farmer, real impressive with his 1 KO, and 2 losses in past 3 fights.
Wow, $500 for ringside is a bargain.
Anyway, I was very impressed with Ballroom card last Friday, evenly matched and entertaining...and yes, I shelled out the $100 for ringside.

Gary Digital Williams said...

I think Andrew Farmer-Ikem Orji is going to be an interesting bout. I think it may come down to power, where I think Farmer has the edge. But Orji is a good boxer and that could make things interesting.

Alec Kohut said...

I guess I can make my point this way. I was in Youngstown for the last Kelly Pavlik fight. The undercard featured Vanes Martirosyan & Samuel Peter. The cost was similar to what the Lange fight will cost. Granted the Peter fight was a sham with Big Gabe Brown, but big names nonetheless. I had paid $100 a tickets to attend Pavlik-Williams in AC, which was scheduled to have Joshua Clottey on the undercard.
So here they are charging World Championship fight prices, and offering a card hardly better than Ballroom Boxing

Alec Kohut said...

I will be there regardless, and hope that I am proven wrong and it will be a great night of boxing.

Alec Kohut said...

Gary, saw the undercard write up on Fightnews.com.
Good job !

lets do this alec kohut, you but a boxing show together, put up your money, but what fights you want. come on give it a try, it sould work you know everything.

Anonymous said...

Put not But.Ridgway are u going to be there. When u fighting again.

Anonymous said...

The fights may not be for world titles but the fights are evenly matched for the most part. If you dont like the price of tickets then either dont come or sit your broke ass up in the nose bleeds! This show is the biggest event in the dmv area by far.... always is. And maybe you should just wait to voice your opinion about the matches until after you see the fights. You can't allways judge a book by it cover, or fighter by there record(look at perry ballard). So just stop with all the negative comments. we should be on here hyping up the show and fighters and be getting ready for a great night of fights.

Mr Kohut my name is ScottFarmer
and I have a little experience in this sport and the cards Mr JD Brown has made matches for in the past have proven to be very competitive
and entertaining and just as you have done he was criticized for the matches before they took place.
Now in hindsight everyone knows he knew what he was doing.Come see the show and I'm sure you will see competative wars just like the last show at the patriot center.

Peace to you my child

The main event is a sham. I don't think anyone can argue that.

How is the main event a sham?? Chase Shields is a pretty good fighter. Was an undefeated prospect until about his 17th, 18th fight. IDK why you saying its a sham??

Well the show seems to setting up nicely, regardless of what we think the show will go on. Just enjoy it and support the local pugs. As far as the main event match I have been critical of Chase Shields and I am still suspect about him, but he is the opponent and thats that. I am just gonna go out and support the local talent

Alec Kohut said...

Ok...here's a fact. Not a single bout on this card features fighters that are both ranked in the top 250 in the world in their weight class. Not my opinion, cold hard fact.

Ratings at BoxingRec.com.

Anonymous said...

than put on your own show, and you can put on all the ranks fighters you like, case close.

Brian said...

Alex trust me I am all for people voicing their opinions on any matter, but you are missing the boat on this thread. Although the outcomes remain to be seen there can be competitive fights outside the top 250. With that being said there is more to boxing than Boxrec.com.

Let us not forget we gave them gruff for matching Jimmy L up against Jonathan Reid and we said it was a mismatch. That fight was a barn burner.

Look I am not drinking the cool aid either, but matching the hometown guys smart is a wise choice. If you don't like it you don't have to go. Its that simple.

One question I have is why isn't Tony Jeter on this card? KO of the night last show. I will say this I am looking forward to seeing Jargal redeem himself and Farmer taking another a step towards the prize.

Also it is a good night out, a who's who in the local boxing scene. Plus this time I have to put my networking hat on. Got my business cards ready!

Alec Kohut said...

This will be my last post on this thread, I fear the name-calling will only increase. So, I believe the fights may well be entertaining and competitive, I certainly hope so. However, ticket prices are similar, if not more, than many World Championship fight cards, so they are charging World Championship prices, for a group of local fighters.
If you feel the fight card is worth $300 - $500 for prime seats, by all means go for it. Just look up and wave, I'll be the one with a beer in the cheap seats!!!

Enjoy the card and I hope it will be a fun night.
Take cars until the next thread.

OK, I will respond in this thread to personal attacks, I am a man.

Clueless is thinking this card is worth big time money, it might be competitive, it might be entertaining, but it's a local card being sold at big time prices.
I have the facts on my side.

Anonymous said...

The facts are that maybe you shouldn't come to the show because
you might meet Dr Ditter.

Brian said...

To Alex, it is worth big time money only if you want to pay for it. Apparently team Lange has the following and this area has the love for him in order to pay those prices. Your not being held at gun point to pay those prices. so by the cheapie like many of us do.

Also may I ask you and your infinite wisodm how do you expect to pay for the cost of the Patriot Center alone? A few years back I looked at the Patriot Center as a possible location for a show a few friends of mine wanted to run. It wasn't cheap. Now add all the fighters purses and incidentals, advertisements, publicity, the supplies needed, ring rentals, gloves, officials, the states cut. I would imagine its around
$130,000. How do you expect them to make up for the costs incurred?

To some fans a night out of laughs and beers is sometimes worth the price of a ticket.

Anonymous said...

For some laughs n beers, its just too them expensive. Sure they have couple of good undercard fights but I can catch those similar fights at Michael's or at Baltimore boxing show. That Jimmy Lange isnt worth $500 or even at $100. He isnt even worth paying. So I say, having couple good bouts on the card n chance to laugh at Jimmy Lange is worth $10 max.

$500 is for the experience, and the atmosphere, where else around here can you rub elbows with beltway boxing legends, former world champions, and boxing icons?

Alec Kohut said...

Brian,

Your point is well taken.
I hope these shows would prove to the big time promoters out there that this area is worthy of some big time boxing cards.

just to give everyone an example of how inaccurate boxrec's ratings are -they currently have bernard hopkins #1 pound for pound. so please take their ratings with a grain of salt.. patrick m.

I agree with boxrec's pound for pound. Factor in Hopkins experience and who he's beaten. They have a point system and he has accumulated more points than anyone else still active. They've made I quite scienific.

I am sick and tired of people on this site who have never made matches complaining about cards. Perfect example is this guy that looks like a washed out chick, Alec Kohut. Kohut doesn't know anything about boxing. Has he no respect for himself? When you don't know nothing just observe.

You sound like the washed out camp of H & Cujo.

Alec has an interest in boxing and airs his views. Why does that rufflle your little puss feathers that only knows how to promote on Gary's blog?

This is an off the topic question BUT, you participate in amateur boxing if you dont fight out of a gym?? I want to take part in amateur boxing but with school, work, and other activities I do, I will only be able to go to the gym around 12 AM and I know for a fact all the gyms are closed (well atleast the ones where I live). The gym I go to has a ring but no boxing team and I could get sparring from a couple of older dudes who mess around with it.

May someone please help me. Thanks in advance.

NOXIOUS said...

If you don't have a trainer and sparring with active fighters it would almost definitely be a waste of time. Sorry

Anonymous said...

I know I will be most certainly at a disadvantage if I didnt fight out of gym but if a trainer is all I will need, I think I will still do it. I have always wanted to fight but my schedule is so cloudy that I never had the time. I actually put myself in boxing shape on my own, I just need to make that next step and actually get in the ring.

Compare boxing cards around the country that night.
At Mohegen Sun Casino in Connecticut, they have two championship fights:
Cory Spinks (IBF Champ) v. C. Bundrage &
Devon Alexander (WBC Champ) v. Juan Urango (IBF Champ)
3 Fighters are top 10, and Bundrage is a top 20.
The card in Fairfax has not one legitimate contender at this time, (maybe future contenders), but right now none.
The tickets prices for the championship fights is less that of the Fairfax tickets.

Given that fact, can you honestly argue that the Fairfax card is worth the money?

I guess I won't hear a logical argument, just more name-calling.

Alec Kohut said...

Frank,

Without insults or name-calling, can you tell me if you think any fighter on the Fairfax card is a legitimate top 25 contender right now?

Anonymous said...

Alec,

The answer to your question above is NO. No one is rated inside of top 100. You're right, Patriot show isn't worth the $ they are charging for tickets. B-craps.

Anonymous said...

NO, it's not worth the money BUT, if people are willing to pay (which they have in recent past) the amount of money they are asking for for tickets, then, kudos to them.

C.R.E.A.M. Cash rules everything around me. Get the money!!!

If they have a bunch of crippled blind retarded anorexic kids (sorry to those I offend whom know a crippled, blind, retarded anorexic child) fighting that night but it sells out or they make enough back, kudos to them. You guys are looking at only the sport side of it. Boxing is very much a business.

Considering that most DC-area fight fans weren't planning to swing by Connecticut for the evening, I'm not sure the comparison is relevant.

People enjoy watching Jimmy Lange fight, and the Langes and ICE have a history of competitive main events with strong undercards. What's happening in Connecticut on that night doesn't matter to most who will be at The Patriot Center, as it was never a decision of choosing one show over another.

The question is whether or not fans will go home thinking that they were fully entertained.

No name calling, though. My argument is simple. An item's worth is determined by how much someone is willing to pay. If enough fans are willing to pay the ticket price necessary to cover the considerable expenses that a previous poster laid out, and the show still makes money, then I'd argue by definition, the show was worth the cost of admission.

Or to put it another way, what is this, Patriot Center show #10? By this time, fans know what they are getting for their money. And, the market has determined the cost vs. value to be favorable.

Anonymous said...

you people have an opinion and you are intitled to it but that doesn't make it accurate.
(Top twenty five )Kohut what makes this so important to you that you have to try to lower the standard of the show at the patriot center in other peoples eyes.If you have attended other shows around the country then I know you have to know that the shows in this area are certainly filled with competative action not like alot of shows elewhere around the country.Have you ever thought about straping on some leather and letting them fly.
If you did I think you would have a new respect for the sport and those you may effect with your comments. PS. Like a previous post that someone made the rankings are just the opinion of just a few people with an agenda of their own.
Speaking of Leather, I bet with that long hair you would look good in a black girdle and some six inch pumps and maybe a little peach lipstick.

Here is a new post from a new poster. No one will drag me into a mudslinging match. My name is Andre "Da Heat" Hemphill. I am a journeyman fighter from the Philadelphia area & I lived for awhile in the beltway area, Woodbridge to be exact. This is an open challenge to Scott Sigmon. I can beat this guy. My record is 8 - 14 - 2. I pride myself on taking on anyone at anytime & my record shows that. I was recently offered a fight against Sigmon & then his people turned it down. I keep up with this blog & have seen how he calls out all of the guys who are 2 & 3 weight classes below him & I just don't get it. If you are a real contender, then fight me. I am a true gatekeeper & will give you a good test as I did Mark Tucker. Tucker is a great fighter by the way. The matchmaker has my number. I will be waiting for your call. Although I will look on the blog for a response, there is really no need. This is my challenge. Hopefully, everyone along the beltway will see it & we can make a great fight, a fight in which I will DEFINATELY KNOCK YOU OUT!

One more thing, I can sell tickets in VA as well as up here in PA so promoters please be aware.

Sigmon, come on man. Let's do this. Anytime, anywhere, even winner take all! You want a real fight, here it is!

Sincerely & respectfully,

Da Heat
