L. Peterson Title Bid Moved to December 12!

ESPN.com's Dan Rafael is reporting that WBO Interim Junior Welterweight champion Lamont Peterson's title bout against WBO champion Timothy Bradley has been pushed back one week to Saturday, December 12 at the Aqua Caliente Resort in Rancho Mirage, CA.

This is probably better for the contest -- which will be televised on Showtime -- because the new date means that a head-to-head showing against the Paul Williams-Kelly Pavlik bout on HBO December 5 will be avoided.

According to Rafael, there is an interesting situation with the issue of money. Originally, Peterson was supposed to receive the lion's share of a 60-40 split of the purse due to a WBO rule that stated if a fighter goes to the other boxer's home town or country, that fighter receives the bigger piece of the purse. The WBO then amended that rule and decided on a 50-50 split. However, the promoter of the bout, Gary Shaw, protested.

Shaw tells Rafael that there was an "appeals process" via a teleconference call involving Bradley co-managers Cameron Dunkin and Michael Miller, Carl Moretti of Top Rank (who represented Peterson) and a representative from the WBO. The WBO used yet another rule that said in a fight where an interim titleholder faces a titleholder, the split is decided based on a formula that takes the last three purses earned by each boxer.

Because Bradley, who has appeared on Showtime extensively more than Peterson, had earned more money, the WBO ruled in his favor and gave him an approximate 75-25 split of the purse.

Boy is this confusing. But kudos to the WBO for at least publicly displaying their rules: http://www.wbo-int.com/

From what I could gather, in the case of an interim champion facing a reigning champion, the purse should be split evenly, save an adjustment to compensate for a "home ring" advantage.

The BIG exception seems to be when one of the fighters has been designated a "super champion." (There is a long list of ways that can occur, one of which is signing a multi-fight contract with a major TV broadcaster.)

In this case, the purse is divided as described in the original BATB posting---a proportional distribution based on the cumulation each fighter's last three purses, not to exceed an 80/20 split.

So I think I understand it now, with the exception of how Peterson ended up the "interim champion" while there was still a reigning champion. Thanks for any insight anybody can shed on the interim designation.

I pray and wish you the best. This fight that you're about to encounter, is call sowing and weeping. You've sown great seeds, in your amateur career. Now it's time for you to weep your "HARVEST" in your Pro career. IT'S HARVEST TIME, PLAINT YOUR SEED OF FAITH. I'll have the kids from the gym (No 'X' Cuse) to be in agreement with you.

Ah, boxing politics, gotta love it (rolling my eyes).

Yeah ACW, the whole "super champion" thing sounds arbitrary and political. Take a look at the following:

A boxer may be considered for designation for Super Champion status when he meets the following criteria:
(1) The boxer presently or previously has or had a multiple bout contract with a major television network (HBO, SHOWTIME, ZBF, Sky or other similar broadcast company), for multiple years; and
(2) As a WBO Champion,
(A) The boxer has successfully defended his title cumulatively a minimum of ten (10) title bouts, or;
(B) In the event of less than ten (10) successful defenses has defended his/her title against opponents of high recognition and high skills; and
(C) Has substantially met the other standards set forth herein.

So, a boxer needs at least 10 successful title defenses to be a "super champion"....unless he doesn't.

The exception to the 10 sucessful defenses sounds like a loophole you can drive a truck through, "In the event of less than ten (10) successful defenses has defended his/her title against opponents of high recognition and high skills..."

Whatever that means. It sounds like if you are a name fighter on a card where the promoter is wavering on whether or not he wants to pay the WBO sanctioning fee, it might be time for you to discuss "super champion" status with the WBO before leaning on the promoter to get the fight sanctioned.

Keep your eye on the prize, Lamont. I hope that your corner will have a festive cape waiting for you, so when they present you with the championship belt, you can don the cape, look into the camera, and say "I am 'Super Champion' now!"

I think stylistically this is the perfect fight for Lamont. Bradley is a busy come forward fighter with very over rated pop. Lamont is a precision counter puncher with lightening speed who stays consistent to the body.

Stay to that body Lamont! He will slow down and quit punching. Trust me. For the first 5 or 6 rounds people will think you are losing but stay to the body anyway. It ain't pretty but it's efficient. Come 7 or 8 he will be on a platter for you. You are faster, you are a better boxer, you have better footwork, your body game is better, you have a better chin, you are just plain better.

Take that title brother and make that money. The bigger money will come after this fight.
