BATB sends prayers and well-wishes to boxing broadcaster Nick Charles. www.RingTV.com, the website of The Ring Magazine, is reporting that the 63-year-old Charles is battling Stage Four advanced cancer.
Charles told Ringtv that the cancer started in his bladder and spread to other areas. Last week, Charles started chemotherapy at the Anderson Cancer Center at the University of Texas in Austin -- the same location where former world champion Genaro Hernandez received his treatment.
“I got some real bad cancer, I gotta tell you,” Charles said. “It’s stage IV, highly aggressive. The term is metastasized; it’s spread to other places. It’s not good. … The idea is to hit it hard (with chemo) and see which tumors shrink up. It’s a long road, a 12-round fight. This is like Round 2.
“I just want another round, another day. I’ll do it. I just have so many great people in my life.”
I mention this story because Charles's sportscasting career grew roots along the Beltway. After working in Illinois, Charles worked at WJZ-TV in Baltimore and then served as sports director at WRC-TV in Washington and also worked at WTOP Radio in the 70's.
In 1980, Charles became the first sports anchor for a fledgling 24-hour all-news cable network called CNN. He became one of the many media personalities from this area who did well on a national level as he won three CableAce Awards for best sports program during his 17-year tenure as co-host of Sports Tonight alongside Fred Hickman.
Charles currently serves as the blow-by-blow announcer for boxing on the Versus Network and for ShoBox on Showtime.
