Rivera, Robles, Sigmon Victorious in Fluvanna!

Charlottsville, VA junior middleweight George "Wartime" Rivera survived a first-round knockdown to win a six-round unanimous decision over late sub Ike Ezeji of the Bronx, NY in front of his hometown crowd at his alma mater, Fluvanna County High School in Fluvanna, VA.

Ezeji scored the knockdown reportedly with a right hand, although some reportedly thought it was a slip. However, Rivera came back very strong in front of a raucous crowd and won the bout on all three cards, 58-55. With the win, Rivera raises his record to 10-4, three KO's. Ezeji is now 7-16-1, two KO's.

In the co-feature, Waynesboro, VA cruiserweight "El Guerro" Juan Carlos Robles won a six-round unanimous decision over late sub Francois Ambangof Mechanicsville, VA. Robles had a tougher than expected time against Ambang, who has only two pro bouts, but looked good in his last outing, a victory against Otganbayer Daivii on February 20 in Westminister, MD. Ambang caught Robles with nice shots early, but Robles was able to use a left jab and followed up with power combinations.
Robles is now 12-2, five KO's while Ambang is now 1-2.

Also on the card, Bedford, VA light heavy Scott "Cujo" Sigmon stopped Virginia Beach, VA's Frankie "The Freight Train" Filippone in the third round when Filippone, a Virginia Beach police officer, injured his hand. Sigmon is now 5-1, two KO's while Filippone loses for the first time and he is 2-1, one KO.

The opening bout of the night saw Akron, OH’s Dannon Svab (6-5-1, four KO's) stop the debuting Duane Douglas of Pittsburgh, PA with a big right hand about 30 seconds into the heavyweight contest. Douglas couldn’t beat the count of ten.

The next Major League Boxing card will be on Saturday, April 11th at the Lynchburg Armory in Lynchburg, VA.

  1. I think it is unfair to say that sigmon stopped Filippone. If you saw the fight Filippone won both rounds. It is was a disappointment to see Filippone hurt his hand and could not continue. However it still goes down as a "TKO", but Sigmon knows that he got a cheap victory. It looked like a tough fight for both of them but Filippone was clearly winning.

  2. Thats Crap! Filippone won the first and he was getting his ass handed to him in the second. If he came out for the third there wouldnt have been a fourth. Cujo would have put him down for sure and Frankie knows it. Thats the difference between a fighter with heart and a fighter with no heart.

  3. Filippone won the first round. Cujo was all over his ass in the second round. Sorry Filippone hurt his hand, but Cujo did mess up Filippone's nose and eye. If you know anything about boxing you would know Cujo would have won the following rounds.

  5. I'll tell you who knows and its Frankie Fillipone. When hes asleep at night thinking about how he quit on his stool by faking a hand injury hes just all alone with his thoughts and his fears and his nightmares and his failures. And there is one nightmare in particular that keeps happening over and over and over again and thats the one of the Mad Dog Cujo ripping in to his flesh and delivering pain and punishment and destruction and devastation. Cujo made him quit. If Frankie came out for the third round they would have carried him out on a stretcher he knows it his corner knows it the crowd knows it and the whole world knows it. Frankie looked in to his sould in between the second and third rounds and asked himself did he have what it takes to beat the man they call Cujo? COULD HE TAKE THE PAIN COULD HE TAKE THE PUNISHMENT! THE ANSWER WAS NO!

  6. No, they are not D level fighters. Are they A level fighters meaning they will win world titles? We will see. Are they among the best in their weight classes in the area. I would say they are.

Who is a better cruiserweight in the area than Juan Robles? Maybe Darnell Wilson, maybe Emmanuel Nwodo. So to say that Robles is a D level fighter is like saying all the area cruiserweights are D level fighters. And that's just not true.

Rivera is clearly not a D level fighter. Unless you consider Jesse Nicklow a D level fighter too. Rivera is definitely near the top of the list of all junior middleweights in the area. He's right there with Jimmy Lange, Ishmail Arvin, and Jesse Nicklow.

Sigmon has more to prove but with his heart, determination, and conditioning, he's going to be hell for anybody to deal with. We'll see what the future holds for all three.

  10. Rivera would not only beat that ass, he'd dominate that ass! Arvin is a bum, he won't ever fight George Rivera I guarantee it! The fight can get done if Arvin wants it. George will fight him, he'll fight anybody!

  11. Who would win that fight between George and Ishmail? Gary could you weigh in on this.

  12. Arvin has certainly fought better competition overall and is slated to fight for the USBA Junior Middleweight title next month.

I think Arvin hits a little harder than Rivera. Rivera is a good boxer but I think Arvin can catch up to him.

It would be a good battle, but I lean towards the Arsenal on this one.

  13. I like Rivera's chances against Arvin. I think they are similar but I would give George the edge in every category. George is bigger, faster, stronger, has better footwork, and, contrary to what Digital says, George has more power than Arvin. We would like that fight in the near future. Hopefully, Arvin will win the title and George will get a shot at Arvin somewhere down the line.

    Signed,

Joe Hensley - Promoter of George Rivera

  16. I have seen both fight a few times, and I agree with Gary. Arsenal is a tough, crafty cagey fighter. If George was under my wing I would never throw him in with Arsenal.
    At least not right now.
