Arvin Scheduled to Battle for USBA Junior Middleweight Title!
There are reports that Baltimore's Ishmail "The Arsenal" Arvin will battle for the vacant USBA Junior Middleweight championship on Saturday, April 11 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ.
Arvin (15-1-4, seven KO's) briefly held the USBO Middleweight title after winning a controversial TKO over Philadelphia, PA's Anthony Thompson in his last bout on August 15 at Ibiza Nightclub in DC. However, USBO officials stripped Arvin of the title because of the controversy.
Arvin is slated to face another Philadelphia boxer -- one that will be familiar to Beltway Boxing fans. Arvin's opponent will be Derek "Pooh" Ennis (17-2-1, 12 KO's). Ennis fought one of the best bouts in Ballroom Boxing history when he battled Maxell Taylor to a spirited six-round draw in March of 2006.
Ennis also scored a first-round knockout over Martinus Clay in Glen Burnie in January of 2006 and stopped Roland Cummings in February of the same year at the George Mason University Patriot Center.
BATB will have more on this story as it develops.

Orji Heads to NJ; McRae to SC!
As we mentioned on the most recent BATB Post-Fight Wrap-Up Show, undefeated Laurel, MD lightweight Ikem "The Warrior" Orji will be participating on a card on Friday, February 27 at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ.
Orji (4-0, one KO) will take on fellow undefeated boxer Anthony Flores of Philadelphia, PA (6-0, four KO's) in what will be Orji's first scheduled six-round contest.
We also mentioned that there will be a Beltway Boxer on a card in Hilton Head, SC on Saturday, February 28. I had the right venue but the wrong boxer. Undefeated Laurel, MD heavyweight "The Big Ticket" Dwayne McRae (3-0, three KO's) is scheduled to take on Corey Winfield on Winston-Salem, NC (2-4, two KO's.) Winfield fought on Fight Night 2007 at the Washington Hilton and Towers in DC, losing a six-round majority decision to Wilmer Vasquez.

Recent Washington Times Columns Highlight Beltway Boxing Scene!
Washington Times Columnist Thom Loverro continues his great work in highlighting parts of the Beltway Boxing scene. In two recent columns Loverro wrote about some great situations and events that are happening in our area.
Right after the Super Bowl, Loverro connected Pittsburgh Steelers Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger's concussions to a study that the Maryland State Athletic Commission has been working on concerning the possible symptoms of brain disorders among boxers. This study has also been featured in a recent column in Ring Magazine.
The Times column can be found here:

Also, Loverro on his "Lovey Land" blog, wrote a very nice story on the recent Belfast-Beltway Boxing Classic that took place at the Westin Hotel in DC. Here's that column:

DC lightweight Anthony Peterson, who was slated to take on Edner Cherry in the co-feature pay-per-view bout this Saturday in Madison Square Garden in New York, hurt his knee in training and will not be able to participate.
Peterson and his trainer, Barry Hunter, told Fightnews.com that Peterson heard a clicking noise in his left knee, ran for eight miles and aggravated the kneecap. Peterson underwent an MRI this past Saturday.
“Anthony is very, very upset as he really wanted to fight at Madison Square Garden,” said Hunter. “He is physically unable to compete at this time.”

Peterson Videos Talk About February 21 Bout with Cherry!
Let me thank New York-based boxing reporter "El Boxing Empress" Keisha Morrisey for the following videos from the recent press conference in New York concerning the Miguel Cotto bout at Madison Square Garden and the Kelly Pavlik bout card in Youngstown, OH.
These videos concern Anthony Peterson and his co-feature bout with Edner Cherry. The first features Peterson and trainer Barry Hunter at the podium. The second is a one-on-one interview with Peterson that someone other than Morrisey conducts along with Morrisey. Unfortunately, I was unable to embed these videos so I can only provide the link.

Russell Weighs 126 1/2 for Bout in Florida!
Capitol Heights, MD featherweight Gary Russell, Jr. and his opponent, John Wampash of Quito, Ecuador, weighed in at 126 1/2 for their four-round bout at the Bell Atlantic Center in Sunrise, FL.
This bout will be on the non-televised undercard of the Nate Campbell-Ali Funeka bout, which took an interesting turn during the weigh-in. Campbell came in three pounds overweight on his initial weigh-in and could only lose a half-pound the second time on the scales. Campbell, in essence, lost his title on the scales. The title is now vacant and only Funeka has a shot at winning the title tomorrow night.
UPDATE: Apparently, Bayan Jargal is no longer on the November 14 card in Reno, NV. Looks like his scheduled opponent backed out.

Hide Responds to Wilson!
Apparently, former WBO Heavyweight champion Herbie Hide heard about the comments made here on BATB and printed on Fightnews.com from Darnell "The Ding-A-Ling Man" Wilson. In the interest of fair and objective journalism, BATB prints Hide's response that was posted to Fightnews:
“Darnell Wilson can’t be serious. He must have some ‘Ding-A-Ling’ in his head. Isn’t he the man who just lost in Singapore to Ehinomen Ehikhamenor, a guy I clearly outclassed last year? How dare this kid calling me out? Wilson, listen son, if you want to come and play with the big boys do your homework first. You are coming off two straight losses and got nothing to offer. I am lined up for a final elimination bout. You can come and do sparring with me if you want. If you’re interested in a thorough thrashing from the ‘Dancing Destroyer’ – how much do you want to pay for it? If you bring some money to the table I might give you a good lesson. Otherwise, start beating mediocre guys before you try to compete at the top level.”

Wilson Campaigns for Bout Against Herbie Hide March 6!
Here's some outside the Beltway news that may eventually affect a Beltway Boxer.
There was a 12-round WBC Cruiserweight elimination bout that was slated for March 6 in Cruxhaven, Germany between former WBO Heavyweight champ Herbie Hide and top-rated contender Matt Godfrey.
However, Godfrey injured his hand in training and the bout was postponed. However, Hide plans to fight on the sixth and is looking for an opponent.
One man who is making himself very available for this bout is the Beltway's own Darnell "The Ding-A-Ling Man" Wilson. Wilson is looking to put his recent stint on "The Contender" behind him and sees this as a possible opportunity to get back into the cruiserweight mix. If Wilson gets the bout, it will be an eight-rounder instead of a 12-round eliminator.
Wilson talked to BATB about this possible bout and speaks frankly about what happened in Singapore for "The Contender.

Johnson Sparring With Tarver; Chernoff to Lead USA Squad in Ireland!
Two very nice stories to pass along. Undefeated Oxon Hill, MD light heavyweight Alexander "The Great" Johnson has been working in the camp of former IBF Light Heavyweight champion Antonio Tarver in Orlando, FL. Tarver is preparing for his March 14 rematch against current champ Chad Dawson that will take place in Las Vegas.
Johnson has been the chief sparring partner for Tarver and sources tell BATB that Johnson is performing quite well. So well, in fact, that Johnson (5-0, three KO's) may get an opportunity to fight on that March 14card.
Meanwhile, Salisbury, MD trainer Hal Chernoff is in the midst of a very busy February. This past Friday, Chernoff helped lead his long-time charge -- Fernando Guerrero -- to an eight-round unanimous decision victory in Salisbury. Now, Chernoff will prepare for a trip to Dublin, Ireland as one of the coaches of a USA Boxing team that will face the Irish National Team in two dual meets from February 27 - March 2.
Chernoff will be working with two-time Olympian Rau'shee Warren and 2008 Olympic teammate Raynell Williams as well as US Super Heavyweight champ Michael Hunter. Chernoff will first head to the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs for preparation from February 18-24 before heading to Ireland.

Guerrero, Buchanan Weigh-in For Nationally Televised Bouts!
Fernando Guerrero and Henry "Sugar Poo" Buchanan hit the scales yesterday for their nationally televised bouts. In Guerrero's case, a little bit of controversy ensued.
According to Delmarvanow.com, when Guerrero stepped on the scale the first time, he was over the 160-pound limit. It was determined later that the scale was off. Guerrero weighed in a second time, buck naked. The official weight was 157 3/4. Delmarvanow did not list Rosado's official weight. Reporter Tim Brennan of Delmarvanow.com did mention that Rosado's camp was not happy.
"...members of Rosado's camp continued making comments about the questionable scale and what this all meant -- implying that the scale was off by as much as it needed to be so Guerrero could make weight, and that the scores tonight might be a similar situation (if the fight goes to a decision)."
The card at the Wicomico Youth and Civic Center in Salisbury, MD begins at 8 PM with the ESPN2 telecast starting at 9 PM ET.
I have not been able to obtain any info on Dominic Wade's weight or opponent at this time.

Meanwhile, in Lemoore, CA, Henry "Sugar Poo" Buchanan (left) weighed-in at 167.6 pounds for his 10-round contest against undefeated 2004 Olympic Gold Medalist Andre Ward tonight on ShoBox. Ward tipped the scales at 166.2 pounds. This bout is for Ward's NABO and the vacant NABF Super Middleweight title.
This has been a rough stretch for Buchanan because his sister recently passed. But according to a Showtime press release, he is ready for this bout.
“I am here to fight and to win. No excuses in my last (Showtime) fight against (Jean Paul) Mendy – he beat me fair and square — but the fact is I entered the ring with a broken hand I had broken in the fight before that.
“I am not 100 percent healthy, I am 200 percent healthy for this and I am looking forward to the opportunity to defeat an Olympic gold medalist.
“Ward’s been down. I wasn’t even knocked down in the streets. It is not going to happen.
“My whole life has been uphill; nothing has come easy, my sister died just last week. So I am thrilled to get this fight. No matter what it says on paper, Ward had better be ready for the fight of his life.
“He’s a great fighter, no doubt about that. But if you want to make a name for yourself, and some money, in this sport, if you have bills to pay, you jump at this kind of opportunity and make the best of it.
“And that is exactly what I plan to do.’’
The Showtime ShoBox telecast begins at 11 PM ET from the Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino in Lemoore, CA.

The second annual Belfast-Beltway Boxing Classic amateur boxing card returns to DC on Saturday, February 7 at the Westin Washington, D.C. City Center Hotel on 1400 M Street NW.
A team from Belfast, Ireland will battle a DC Select squad for the second consecutive year. The Belfast-Beltway Boxing Project (BBBP) is a Washington, D.C. based non-profit group dedicated to providing cultural exchange and international amateur athletic competition through support of at-risk youth in the metropolitan Washington, D.C area and Belfast, Northern Ireland.

DC's Demarcus "Chop Chop" Corley scored a seventh-round TKO over Wilson Enrique Galli of Uruguay last night at the Meadowlands Sheraton in East Rutherford, NJ.
The former WBO Junior Welterweight champion faced a lot of forward pressure from Galli during the bout but Corley used his hand and foot speed to avoid any difficulties.
