New Beltway Boxing Poll: Who is the 2008 Beltway Boxing Prospect of the Year?

In our new poll, we ask the question who is the 2008 Beltway Boxing Prospect of the Year?

This poll is for boxers who have more than one year of experience (so the rookie class is not eligible) and who are not ranked in the top 20 of any major governing body.

Here are the nominees in alphabetical order along with their overall record and 2008 information:

Andrew "Doo Man" Farmer, junior welterweight, Front Royal, VA (11-1, seven KO's overall; 2-0, one KO in 2008)

Horace "The Reason" Grant, heavyweight, Bowie, MD (13-2, eight KO's overall; 2-1, one KO in 2008 -- has one more bout scheduled in the year on December 20)

"The Mongolian Mongoose" Bayan Jargal, welterweight, Arlington, VA (9-0-1, six KO's overall; 4-0, three KO's in 2008)

Tony "Mo Better" Jeter, junior middleweight, Columbia, MD, (7-2, six KO's overall; 3-0, two KO's in 2008)

Alexander "The Great" Johnson, light heavyweight, Oxon Hill, MD (5-0, three KO's overall; 2-0 in 2008)

Jessie "The Beast" Nicklow, middleweight, Baltimore, MD (19-1-1, seven KO's overall; 5-1, two KO's in 2008)

Mike "The Persecutor" Paschall, super middleweight, Baltimore, MD (18-1-1, four KO's overall; 4-1, two KO's in 2008)

George "War Time" Rivera, middleweight, Charlottsville, VA (9-3, three KO's overall; 3-2 in 2008)

Tyrell "Da Show Shock 'A" Samuel, featherweight, Baltimore, MD (11-2, five KO's overall; 2-0 in 2008)

Willie "For Real" Williams, light heavyweight, Baltimore, MD (12-2-1, three KO's overall; 4-0, one KO in 2008 -- has one more bout scheduled for December 12)

Five of these boxers (Grant, Jargal, Johnson, Paschall and Rivera) all made nationally televised appearances. Jargal and Johnson were victorious.

Quick BATB blog note: This post is number 1,501 in the four-year history of BATB!

Two boxers (Paschall and Williams) won East Coast championships while Samuel won a Maryland State title.

well my vote goes to Pascall. He made the biggest jump in competition out of us all! He didn't win but he gave a great effort and went out on his shield. Maybe if the cut wasn't so bad he would have made it interesting, well i know he would have. But all of my other asociates did well this year and i hope we all have a good year in 09'
-?

Man this is a great list! There is an awful lot of talent in the area.

Farmer is a good boxer puncher who has passed some tough tests.

Grant's a huge puncher. Would have like to see him throw more punches in that ESPN fight, but perhaps it was a learning experience.

Jargal is extremely tough, strong, and durable. If he's matched with guys that come straight at him, he's going to keep winning for a while.

Jeter had a good amateur background and is easing back in to the pro game. We'll see what he's got when he steps up some in '09.

Alexander Johnson - I've got to be honest with you, I don't see a whole lot there. Not bad but he doesn't have the talent that a lot of these guys have.

Jesse Nicklow - very tough, in great shape, and he fights with a fire in his belly. He's still a baby too. Like Jargal, if he's matched with a style of fighter that isn't a jabber or mover, he'll be just fine.

Paschall is slick and quick and very skilled. I had him winning the fight with Dirrell until he got busted wide open and the fight was stopped.

Samuel, I only saw once and that was on TV against Eric Hunter. I didn't think a whole lot of Hunter and he beat Samuel. He's an okay guy.

George Rivera - Against Mundy on TV he showed glimpses but he didn't show what he could really do. In the two fights with Nicklow he showed a good boxer, puncher style that is going to be hard for a lot of guys to deal with.

Willie Willams - like Samuel and Johnson he's a step behind all the other guys on this list.

I would have to say my top vote would be split among Farmer, Jargal, Paschall, Niclow, and Rivera. All 5 are very talented fighters and 2009 will tell us a lot about their careers in the sport.

alexander johnson should not be on the list yet, but he may belong here in the future-maybe.

Fernando has over a year of experience he turned pro in 2007
and should be included in this poll

Gary Digital Williams said...

Fernando turned pro in November of 2007 after my deadline last year. Therefore, I qualify him as a rookie.

regardless Fernando is the top Prospect on here. Gary what abot Tim Coleman? He headlined showtime and i have that a draw. Out of the list given i pick Nicklow.

Gary Digital Williams said...

Coleman only fought once this year and it was a loss, unfortunately.

william would this help,i look up how the 5 guys someone list.after 12 fights andrew farmer is rank 259 bayan jargal after 10 is 60 jessie nicklow after 21 is 200 mike paschall 66 after 20 george rivera 177 after 12 fights, this also show the level of people they been in the ring with.

Anonymous said...

So anonymous I guess you're saying that based on BoxRec.com ratings those guys would be listed in this order:

1)Jargal

2)Paschall

3)Rivera

4)Nicklow

5) Farmer

I would go along with that list. Speaking of Boxrec I see they have Jargal listed at 26 years old. I thought he was 32? Also, Rivera is 30 and Paschall is 29. Nicklow is still only 21 and Farmer is only 23. Perhaps in the next 3 years we may see some big things out of these two. Will be interesting.

Ty Barnett is the best prospect in the area this year look at his last three wins and compare them to the others and you be the judge it speaks for its self...

Anonymous said...

Ty Barnett ranked #10 in the country and #41 in the world what more can you say...Gary make the corrections and put Ty at the top of the list...

Anonymous said...

Your right he's got the best record and fought the better opposition crown Ty Barnett DMV prospect of the year you could argue for over all prospect of the year..

Anonymous said...

Jargal is really a good prospect.
Farmer has alot of talent has not fought anybody yet.
Paschall and Sugar Poo a good fight make that in the Ballroom .Nicklow and Rivera need to break the tie.Ty Barnett is a good prospect the rest are club fighters today and five years from now they will still be club fighters.

Gary Digital Williams said...

Ty has surpassed the prospect role and is now a contender, that is why he is not on this list. He is ranked in the top 10.

He will be on the next poll for Beltway Boxer of the Year.

Who will win prospect of the year?

Anonymous said...

bayan jargal is only 26,great list of guys.dont matter who gets pick, they all gets it in my book. DC MD AND VA looking good.

Anonymous said...

well one could say that this guy has a better ranking than this guy, therefore he is a better fighter. WRONG! The ranking system on boxrec is wack, and maybe you should look at the common opponents for some of these guys and see who did better with who. You might be surprised. Again dont say these guys haven't fought anybody, based on there rankings. There are way more things that go into the ranking system wether we want to admit it or not. Like where you fight, who you fight, who you fought for, who you are signed with. It's a political world out there. And as far as all the people on the list except ty barnett beeing club fighters.... I didn't see anything invincible when i saw him on t.v So draw you own conclusions.....

George Rivera has fought the toughest competition of anyone on this list: Jesse Nicklow twice, Latif Mundy, and Clarence "Sonny Bono" Taylor in 2008 alone. It's got to be War Time Rivera!

Anonymous said...

George Rivera sucks. He was knocked out by Charles Norwood in two, quit against Mundy, and had the shit beat out of him by the beast. The beast beat him the second time and did not get the decision.

Anonymous said...

Well Mr. or Mrs smart ass you sound like you know what your talking about but you really dont u tell me which one of those club fighters can match Ty skill for skill None!!and styles make fights so it doesnt matter how one did with a opponent its the win that counts

Anonymous said...

I think all on the list is going to be good. But if it's a vote of the best. I would have to go with Wartime. He has showed that he can be a slugger and a boxer.

Anonymous said...

I would pick George "Wartime".

Rome.

Good list of guys, some nice middle and jr middle weights.

Anonymous said...

good list of fighters .
Some with heart and some with much less heart. All have ability but to say who is the prospect of the year, well sometimes it,s opportunity and having a big set of gonads that really decides who can make it to the next level. Fighting good fighters and not winning doesn,t get you to the next level.

Anonymous said...

well if some of these fighters on the list were able to train and fight, and that was there only job then they would be as good as Ty. I am not saying that he isn't a good fighter, because he is, i am just saying that just because he is ranked higher than the people on this list that doesn't make him a better fighter as you say.

-Mr. Smartass haha
