Sad news to report. Longtime Beltway-area trainer Robert Fortune passed away on Thanksgiving Day, November 27 of natural causes at the age of 52.
Fortune was a well-known figure in the Beltway-area who worked with a number of Beltway stars during the 1990's including former WBO Junior Welterweight champion DeMarcus "Chop Chop" Corley, former middleweight contender Andrew Council "Of War", junior middleweight prospect Vincent "Boojay" White, and veteran middleweights Maurice "Mighty Mo" Adams and Alfonzo "Too Good For You" Daniels.
The funeral services for Mr. Fortune will be held tomorrow (December 3) at JB Jenkins Funeral Home, 7474 Landover Road in Landover, MD beginning at 10:30 AM.
My condolences to Mr. Fortune's family. I had the pleasure of interviewing and talking boxing with this great, yet quiet man during my "Boxing Spotlight" days and he will be missed.

Digital, I attended the homegoing for our fallen warrior Lep..and found out it was short for Leprechaun because of how lucky he was in life. I was glad to see our boxing family came out in force to represent...Joppy, Council, Claude Bolger, Buddy Harrison, Diane Dawes, Wanda Bruce, Bernard Roach, Henry Bunche, and Rock Simms among many others. The tribute was heartfelt and moving, especially those words of wisdom from our old WOL Sportstalk colleague from back in the day, Brother Bey, who hosted along with Coach Butch McAdams.
Personally, when I first met Robert, I will always remember him telling me how much he liked my ring name and the encouragement he gave everyone in the game to strive to do well. I only knew him as Robert Bey and it is only now that I found out his birth name was Fortune. While I was at his eulogy it struck me that he had a wonderful name of his own....and we were really the lucky ones "Fortunate" enough to meet him! This TEN COUNT is for you good brother....gone but never forgotten...may your spirit Rest in Peace....

Ah man, Lep worked with me a few times as an amateur fighting out of Palmer Park. As many of you know, his brother or cousin, Andrew Fortune, was a top amateur out of Palmer Park back in the day; he met a tragic end. Does anyone know the circumstances surrounding Lep's death??/
Im still trying to wrap my mind around Lep's passing. We used to exchange books about wisdom and philosophy. He introduced me to the teachings of Krishnamurti. He also was an avid runner, who always challenged me to run with him in the early to mid 90's. I haven't seen him in years and never knew he was sick, unbeleivable..
I had the great opportunity to meet Lep. He started doing boxing fitness for woman. It was a small group of us and we enjoyed the boxing style of fitness. I enjoyed his kind spirit and gentlemen qualities. This was a rare opportunity which ended to fast. I will miss him dearly and continue to jump the hell out of my rope. May God bless him for eternity. FIT TO FIGHT fitness....
