Williams Advances in PAL Championships!

Laurel, MD 178-pounder Thomas Williams, Jr. advanced to the second round of the National PAL Boxing Championships in Oxnard, CA yesterday.

Williams, son of former heavyweight contender Thomas "Top Dog" Williams, defeated Jeremiah Penny of Oxnard, 5-0. Williams is scheduled to take on Derek Zugic of Brookfield, IL in the next round.

Gary Antonio Russell (I think, it just said Gary A. Russell on the bout sheet) will see his first action of the tournament tonight in the 106-pound, 15-16 age bracket. The Capitol Heights, MD native will take on Taylor Siobal of Waimanalo, HI.

SWEEET! Go @20707! Good luck to GAR!

Gary, please clarify what a walkover is. I am still not sure.

When a boxer cannot perform because of an injury, the opponent wins by default or walkover.

As others have said, a walkover can also take place when a boxer is late for a scheduled weigh-in. The tournament officials may not allow the boxer to compete because of his or her tardiness. Thus, again, the opponent wins by walkover.

Thanks Gary, I just wasn't sure what the other poster really meant.

A walkover is also declared for a no-show or if a boxer is more than 2lbs. over the weight limit at the weigh-in. Less than 2lbs. and they will allow the boxer to attempt to lose the weight and come back to the scale within a certain amount of time.

Not sure what happened in Shadeed's case, but that's a long way to travel and not make weight. I believe the registration was on Sat, so that would give all boxers a full two days in CA to make weight.
