Baltimore cruiserweight Emmanuel "Chukwu" Nwodo's bid for a second regional title was halted in the fourth round by NABF Cruiserweight champion Matt "Too Smooth" Godfrey of Providence, RI tonight in front of a nationally televised audience at the Mohegan Sun resort in Uncasville, CT.
Nwodo got off to a great start, dropping Godfrey in the third round, but Godfrey came back in the fourth, doing damage to Nwodo's nose and battering the former USBA titleholder until the bout was stopped at 1:57 of the round.
With the loss, Nwodo's record falls to 22-5, 18 KO's. With the victory, Godfrey is now 17-1, 10 KO's.

Ouch. Digital, 2 questions:
1) Do you agree with Atlas that Nwodo was betraying himself by fighting small? It sure seemed that way.
2) Do you think they should've stopped the fight? To me, it looked as if Nwodo was trying to continue, but would've been stopped in that round.
Nice rounds 1-3, but he just got caught :(
Thank you for your opinion'it meens so much.
1. I definitely believe that Nwodo did not use his height in the fourth round.
2. I thought the stoppage was a little quick because Nwodo actually threw a punch as the ref stepped in. But Nwodo was being battered so I can't quibble too much.
Steve Smoger is very well known for giving fighters the chance to come back, so no one can really argue when he stops a fight. For all the boxer out there, we can learn from this experience. This was the perfect situation where Nwodo should have either held or taken a knee to give himself the opportunity for collection. It was about a minute left in the round and either or even both of those actions could have ate up a good 20-30 seconds off the clock.
Steve Smoger was not the referee in this bout. Dan Schiavone was the referee in this bout.
That's right, Smoger wasn't the ref. He would have NEVER stopped that fight. That was a premature stoppage. Nwodo never even went down. So what if blood is flowing everywhere? There are refs out there that see blood and get squeamish and stop the fight. Bad, bad stoppage!
Easy for you to say it was an early stoppage it wasn't your blood all over the place.
I know that the fight game is one of if not the toughtest sport on this planet but too many times people have been beat down to the point that if it didn't hurt them
permantally physically it destroys them mentally.A fighters brain and his body can take only so much punishment.Nwodo was in serious trouble in that the other guy was really starting to find his mark.
Nwodo is a talent that in my opinion is not fully developed and to allow him to take a severe beating like he was getting ready to take would be an injustice to both him and the sport of boxing.
All of us in this area wanted him to win but it just wasdn't to be.
I think you're wrong about that one. The man never went down and he was punching back! He had a chance to hurt the other guy and he was clearly winning the fight up until the 4th round. Bad friggin' stoppage! Your name must be Chris Wollensen - the worst damn ref on the planet!
Looks like after Nwodo dropped Godfrey in the third and he jumped right back up to challenge him, Nwodo's fight plan went out the window.
Nwodo came out swinging in the fourth to show who was the boss, but that only gave Godfrey his only opportunity to do something since there was no more jab keeping him at bay.
But, much to his credit, he went for it, and with a little help from the ref, prevailed.
Emmanuel got his nose broke in that exchange and is undergoing a painful recovery after getting it reset at the hospital.
So Chris stopped one of your bouts? Now you are mad. Poor thing. Ha Ha Ha
no referee anywhere has whiter shirts than Chris Wollensen. Housewives everywhere want to know: How does he get those whites so white?
Worst friggin' ref of all time! Chris Wollenson that is? What was the fight in DC years ago where a blew a huge call? It'll come to me later. That's why they never had him back, I'm sure. Now he's stuck down there in VA. What a bunch of idiots down there. The only commission worthy of any praise in the Beltway is Maryland. The rest of them are a damn joke!
Was it the Andrew Council fight? I can't remember exactly, too many shots to the head I guess. Come on Digital, help me out on this one. Which one of those fights down in DC did Wollenson blow a call on and he hasn't been back since? Not to put you on the spot or anything Gary. I'll even provide you with this disclaimer: (ahem, let me clear my throat):
"Even though I am saying Chris Wollenson is the worst friggin' referee of all time, Digital Williams is not saying that. He is only using his tremendous brain full of boxing knowledge to tell us which fight it was that Wollenson made a questionable call on in our nation's capital and hasn't been allowed anywhere near DC since!" - Thanks Digital!
And by the way, Chris Wollenson SUCKS and he shouldn't be allowe anywhere near anything with four corners, much less a boxing ring!
I agree. Chris Wooleson belongs nowhere near a boxing ring. His instincts are horrendous. He seems to consitently make the WRONG call & it seems like he actually HELPS the out of town guys. Refereeing should be unbiased one way or the other. You don't HELP the out of town guy because you want it to seem like you're NOT helping the local guy. Regardless, he is a terrible referee, worst ever, completely incompitent. He should find a job as the president of a chess club somewehere & give up refereeing.
Thank you for the disclaimer. Now let me help out.
The bout you are referring to was the first contest (a nationally-televised USBA Junior Middleweight title bout on ESPN) between Keith Holmes and Andrew Council on September 23, 1994 at the Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, MD.
Council was penalized three times for low blows during that contest-- at least two of them I have always thought were questionable calls.
My opinion..Wollensen was not at his best during that contest and I do believe the outcome help shape the course of both the careers of Holmes and Council.
As for Wollesen..for whatever reason..it did take a long time for him to return to the Beltway area after that contes. To my recollection, he has worked only in DC and Virginia since that bout.
Thanks Digital! I knew it was Council or Holmes but for some reason I didn't think it was the fight when they fought each other. But you are exactly right! Has Wollensen worked in DC since? I haven't seen him since that time. I wish VA would retire him as well!
Digital you are on the money with that one. That fight did shape the career of both Holmes and Council.
I was at ringside and I thought without the penalties that council would have won the fight. My son was with me that night and Andrew Council was one of his favorite boxers when he was young.Maybe it's because they have the same first name.Over the years I have seen so many fighters careers ruined by one bad incident or injury or bad decision. It seems to be the ones that persevere and work their way through a couple of bad spots that make it in the busniess.
You're right! I remember that one now! I don't remember Wollensen being the ref but I'm sure you're right about that one. I remember the ref as being completely incompetent! They're lucky that Council didn't sue the commission and the ref for negligence and incompetence!
Dave Holland, the VA Boxing Commissioner, thinks Chris Wollensen is the best ref in the world! What do you think about that?
Who says that the VA boxing commish thinks that? They use a lot of guys and girls that ref for other states and DC. Hear much less grumbling when VA's in the house. They weren't judging this fight so your point/grudge is??????????
in fact virginia judges were at ringside for this one.
also I believe that Holmes just made it out of jail in time to make it to the fight. There was something about a drive by shooting, but I think it turned out that Keith wasn't the trigger man.
Keith Holmes deserves alot of credit for his accomplishments
in the sport of boxing but that night he got a gift.
Keith got the gold mine and Andrew got the shaft.
I know that the fight was in Upper Marlboro but I think if you research it you will find that most of the judges if not all of them were from Va and they were headlined by none other than,
Dangerous Doc Beavers.I guess he was there because it was a title bout and he brought his possy with him to make sure that things went the way they were supposed to.On a last note Chris Wollenson is not
intentionally harmful it's just that he dosen't see things the way
everyone else does.

Schlimmy Slim
Interesting stuff Slim! Let's find out who the rest of the officials were. If Beavers was indeed at the helm and the other judges were appointed by Beavers then we could have uncovered a real scandal here!
You can't believe the commission because the man and his possy keep everybody in check when they come to town.
I have seen Dave Holland piss alot of people off especially at
weighins because he doesn't put up with the fighters and the managers
trying to manipulate and run the weigh in.Unlike some of the fiascos
I've seen in the District and other places.Whenever somebody doesn't let people have their way
all of a sudden their an idot.
The truth be known Mr Holland probobly didn't give you what you wanted and so now you want to bad mouth him.Grow up you can't always have your way.
Your a Ninny Baby.
I think I know who made the comments about Holland but don't worry I won't tell him .He will catch you one day and he will send you to bed without your din din
bucko.
